Gus Poyet wants to keep Liverpool's Fabio Borini if Sunderland survive Premier League drop

GUS POYET says he wants to keep Liverpool star Fabio Borini at the Stadium of Light if Sunderland survive the drop.

The 22-year-old is currently on a season-long loan at Sunderland from Premier League high-fliers Liverpool, and has proved to be a fan favourite.

Wembley goalscorer Borini, midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng and left-back Marco Alonso are all due to return to their parent clubs at the end of the season.

Poyet has already admitted he wants to sign Ki on a permanent basis from Swansea and is also keen to extend the others’ stay at the Stadium of Light.

And the former Brighton boss has revealed he's keen to keep hold of Borini as well, but knows the Black Cats need to avoid relegation to make it possible.

"Borini is an important player, and he will be important to us if we stay in the Premier League, and are able to keep him," Poyet told The Shields Gazette.

"He's the perfect character to have in a group of players these days - he's the perfect professional, always positive."

The Black Cats have won just one of their last eight home league games, and might have left-empty-handed against Crystal Palace at the weekend had Kagisho Dikgacoi not wasted a glorious late chance to win it for the visitors.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was stung by criticism of his team selection for last Sunday's FA Cup sixth round defeat at Hull, but insisted in advance that would have little bearing on the decision-making for a fixture he had dubbed the most important of the campaign.

Keep Borini, the formation we played against United would suit him down to the ground, there will definitely be games for him next season with Europe, FA Cup and League Cup.

After a full injury free season of being coached by Brendan he could still turn into a very good player.
He has the work ethic and intelligence already with an eye for goal.
Improve his technique and he would suddenly look like a Liverpool player

That's the problem for me. At this stage of his career how much better is his technique going to get (not to mention that he won't get enough games to genuinely improve like he would elsewhere at Liverpool)?

The four players we rely on in attack at the moment (Sterling, Sturridge, Suarez and Coutinho) all have impeccable technique and it's a big part of our success.

Borini has other qualities but it feels to me that we'd be better off getting someone who is more on a par with the other guys.

I suspect we'll keep both Borini and Aspas. I might be wrong, but that's how it's looking to me at the moment.

Keep. A full season on loan will have done his confidence a lot of good. I think he's hungry and determined enough to fight for his future. He knows where to go for the ball in the box and how to finish. Clearly, he isn't in the same class as Suarez or Sturridge, but as a third striker, I believe he'll do a job. If people should've learned anything from these two seasons, it's that Rodgers is great in bringing the best out of the young guys, as long as they're willing to listen, put their head down and work hard. And Borini certainly does seem to fit that description.

Plus, boss celebration.

Bring back Borini, he'll get his chances with next years extra fixtures, and send out Aspas to Sunderland, if they need a striker they'll give him playing time and pay a decent part of his wages. Currently Borini has the best chance of a game at Liverpool, and as Studsup says, a boss celebration.

He'll come back with league AND (probably) world cup experience. He's always been a clever little player who'll buzz about and maintain the fluidity of the front two or three or four when he comes on. He's a handy player to have.

A lot will depend on winning the title.
Players like Borini, Assaidi, Reina etc will want to come back if we are champions and on the up.
I really like him. I say keep. We need 4 strikers next year for all 4 competitons.

I think you're definitely wrong! IMO the only thing that can keep Aspas here is a lack of interest from other clubs. Any kind of reasonable offer and he's gone.

Borini is more of a marginal call. Personally I think we need a more dangerous, dynamic option off the bench (not to mention just better, too: we've only got 2 strikers and one of them is injury prone and we'll have loads more games next season). Also, on a recent Times podcast Tony Barrett said that he expected him to be sold. He's fairly reliable as these things go.

After his decent loan stint, Borini would be a good backup for SAS. Put Aspas out on loan instead i'd say
