We don't really have any players at the moment that give fans some level of anticipation when they get the ball. Compare with City - Toure (if he can be arsed), Silva, Aguero and to a lesser extent Sterling get the ball in advanced areas and you expect them to do something with it. Whereas our players, it's more hope than expectation. It's been so long since Sturridge was fit and in form I've forgotten whether there was that same expectation with him, but I don't think it's ever been there with Coutinho, it hasn't with Firmino and certainly hadn't with any of our other players.
I don't know whether it's a lack of talent or an inability to take responsibility. Probably a bit of both. Can has a little of that belligerence in his game, and Milner/Henderson can certainly scrap, but there's no fear factor for the opposition when they get the ball.
I genuinely feel like we've got a squad made up of supporting acts at the moment. The negative to that is that you can't really count on any of them to give a great performance. The plus side is that I think we have the sort of players that will raise their game with a very good spine. I don't think we have a squad that needs gutting, but there isn't really any point in signing more 'squad players' because that won't benefit us worth talking about. We need top class players because that will give the opposition more to think about, will give us a better chance of winning games (obviously) but will also give our own players more belief.
There are, however, a few players I would cheerfully get rid of in the summer, mostly in defence.
