Harry Kane has the most useless Golden Boot in World Cup history

6 Goals

3 Penalties
2 deflections
1 header.

Failed to turn up when it mattered ..

His goals where against Tunisia, Panama and a Penalty against Columbia

And they have lost 3 games in the whole tournament.. How is that even possible

All against Top sides..

England got lucky with the draw, in no way have they really been worthy of their 4th place

You can only beat what's in front of you, boss.

But, after that result today, the Celts have called for a national holiday on Monday.

And with that my WC coverage ends.

Allez les bleus

If you come 4th you have to lose at least two, losing three is normal enough for a 4th place finish.

Great. Hope you make the most of it and do something nice with your family.

I heard you guys are going to celebrate this anniversary every year. Should be good.
Every year? Nah, just every time England get knocked out of a big tournament.

So, every two years.

I was hearing this morning the Croatian perspective on the England game, that I think gives context to Lovren's unwise comments about being one of the greatest defenders. Members of the English media in the press conference suggested to him he must be conflicted about wanting to win against England since he lives there and plays for an England club side. They suggested that part of him must be wanting an English victory. He just looked at his press officer incredulously. Then, another member of the English media reminded him of his nightmare game against Spurs and said he must be terrified of the prospect of facing the mighty Kane again. And Ollie seems to doubt that the English football media are a legitimate force for anti-England sentiment. The Croatians were completely convinced of English arrogance after the press conference and were very wound up for the game. So bit of an own goal, all-in-all.

The English only have to sneeze to be accused of arrogance.

That queation makes me laugh, though. Either through humour or just sheer stupidity.

If you can't accept the English media are a bunch of cunts who do the national image no good, then there's nothing left to say. Lets be clear- I'm not saying the English team were arrogant, or that the English people are particularly marked by arrogance. But the media do a fantastic job of getting non-English people's heckles up. Just ask the Croats (who I am pretty sure don't count as being Celts).

It's weird that the media is being defended after so many people kicked off on them for revealing southgates teamsheet

The media is for whatever sells the most, and aggravating the opposition to try and get a soundbite is peak English tabloid

Purposefully trying to wind lovren up so he comes out with something to anger the baying mob who want to dominate the world and free yaxley-lennon

Even the "it's coming home" shite

We didn't even invent the fucking game

It isn't just the English media at whom the accusation of arrogance is often aimed though, Doc. By contrast with your even-handed post above, in my experience the "arrogant" tag does tend to get stuck on the lot of us indiscriminately when it surfaces. Might your own reference to "the national image" tend to bear that out?

I hope what I'm implying is there is a difference between what is real and the image projected by the media, which is, unfortunately, an ugly, and I would argue not truly representative avatar for England.

One of the blokes on 5 live said he heard some Russian sound engineers setting up before some WC related event. They were saying "one-two, one, two, football's not coming home". The mantra got the back up of almost all the other nations, and the Croats were annoyed about it too (partly because again, the English press seem to have been twats, asking silly questions about it- and they believed that the saying suggested they were already looking beyond Croatia to the final). In this case though I think they do miss that for a lot of English people the saying carried an element of self deprecating humour. Most people saying it didn't believe for a minute that IT was coming home. I think this was a case of English arrogance being imputed wrongly.

I'm not sure I've ever commented on the English football media in the context of defending them, Doc. So I'm a little unsure of your point there.

But, yeah, elements of the English football media are pretty appalling in a lot of ways, particularly in the way they demean opponents. But any worse than, say, the Aussie cricket media in this regard? Or the NZ rugby one? Not in my experience. And reading some of the Croatian media headlines after their win on Weds, well, they could certainly be accused of arrogance as well!

So, for me, it's all confirmation bias. But that's not for a minute suggesting I don't see your point. About the English media, anyway. If you're looking for a reason to hate, they give you an easy one.

Not many people in NI, Scotland or Wales listen to the Aussie cricket media in their cars on the way to work.

And for good reason. Their arrogance is breathtaking. You lot would be beside youraelves.

Typical English misrepresentation of the Irish. We don't believe in elves, and we certainly don't have them beside us. It's fairies we're into.

You know the way sky was full of United fans and the way they got on when United won something was annoying? Well, it's like that for the other regions of the UK.

I'm trying to put it in context here because it's not comparable with the New Zealand media taking about their rugby team as there isn't other regions of New Zealand that have their own teams.

So, now that the tournament has ended, are we all in agreement that Degsy was the top performing Liverpool player?

Probably worth mentioning how brilliant Russia were as hosts tbf.

I for one feared an absolute orgy of racism and violence.
They were brilliant hosts, and from all ive seen very deserving.

I think in retrospect its a shame a lot of European fans stayed away, but the South Americans and Africans added a great amount of armosphere.

Fair play Russia. It was a belting world cup.
