Match Thread Plymouth Argyle (A) FAC 3pm 9th Feb

Would be funny if we won a treble but not "the" treble and we spend rest of our lives trying to compare it to Scum's and City's.
Who cares?! If we win both PL and CL this season I don't and would snap your hand off (as would every single Red)!

You can have Messi Suarez and Neymar as your forward line, if you’ve got Nyoni Mcconnell Harvey Mabaya Quansah etc behind them, they’re not seeing the ball unless they’re dropping deep and essentially putting more strain to beat 3-4 players AND score, it just doesn’t happen.

Plymouth knew from the moment our teamsheet was read out, there was something in this for them.
Couldn’t have said it any better myself.

But that doesn't explain how they still did nothing and were gifted a pen.

Our front 3 couldn't turn a page, let alone turn a man.

People are overegging how weak our team was.

Kelleher - starter for most sides
Tsimi - starter for a lot of sides
Quansah - regular for league leaders
Gomez - starter for most sides
Endo - solid player and starts for most
Elliott - usually much fucking better and highly regarded
Diaz, Jota and chiesa - all first team regulars for the current leaders of the league

I'm not fucking having this "oh it was a weak side" bollocks. There was more than enough fucking quality there to beat fucking Plymouth

Those players didn't perform.

Despite front line being shit, game was lost in midfield. Slow, no penetration, no runs into the box to create space for other, no decent shots to pull them out.

Nyoni had some nice touches, but the whole group was far too weak, slow, cautious, and gave up the ball constantly. A lot of that is on Elliott. He saw plenty of the ball and wasted or lost over and over.

Our front line had scraps and no space to work with.

Ah sure this happens when you have a lot of lads who don’t get regular games. I’m delighted the lads got a break and thinking of 2022 and 2024 when we ran ourselves into the ground chasing the quads.

Diaz and Jota have more than proven themselves over the years so I don’t get the hate

But I personally don’t care about the fa cup in a year when we are top of the league and champions league.

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, I'm not that arsed as we can do without ever more games, but on the other hand, the quality of teams left in the competition is weak, and we could have won it easily.
It's on Slot today. Defence did OK (considering all the chopping and changing), midfield was non-existent (and by-passed), attack had far too little of the ball and too much to do. And that's all because our midfield was weak, especially after Endo had to drop back when Gomez went off. So the defenders are punting it long and the three big lumps at the back for them are cutting it out time after time, looking like fucking heroes rather than the Sunday league yard-dogs they are. We should have had proper midfield options on the bench, and the only one we did have (Jones) didn't come on. Makes no sense. When a top club puts out a weakened team and gets turned over I always feel the deserve what they get. We deserved what we got today.
We'd better give the Blueshite a tonking to remember in the last derby at Woodison on Wednesday.
Final point was the commentators going on and on about "the best team in the land". The best team in the land were all at home watching it on the telly. None of them was worried for their place in the first XI on that showing.

Yup.

These are not youths but players who are part of the squad rotation.

We would have won if they put in as much as effort as a league game.

Slot better smack the egos out of these clowns.

Agree with all of that. And lack of Jones, who often drives me crazy, was weird. There was at least a chance he does something like make a run in the box.

Momo's being a cheapskate. He can buy his own beers. Can't believe you fell for that.
Momo has 3 beers left from the weekends haul. One is a 13% stout. Not the sort of beers to down when sorting the tea and doing a bath night for the brats.

I’ll be getting more for the midweek games. Wolves next weekend too.

Mine would have been the squad, why was the bench so wank. He could have swapped the midfield at 60 mins if things needed switching up, imagine seeing Szbo, Jones and Macca come on. It's also about attitude and fear, the subs were poorly managed. Would have brought on Jones, Nunez and another together even with current bench but he phased it. Really nonsensical today, first time with Slot I have questioned his logic.

Just to get our minds off this shit, who's watching the Super Bowl later?

Cant stand Mahomes.

Good lad. Maybe get some piss-weak stuff in on reserve for games like today, just in case like.

How many times have we seen it though that you get this multiplier effect of the drop in quality and the total lack of cohesion of a group that's never kicked a ball together.

These selections are ALWAYS worse than the sum of their parts.

If you've got no cohesion then the technical ability of guys like Elliott, McConnell, Chiesa etc counts for fuck all.

I feel the same way about the FA cup. Slot did tit against PSV too. When you put a team out where a load of them have not played together before, or irregularly, this is going to happen. Klopp did the same, playing a second string where the whole spine of the team had been taken out. I get why it needs to be done but It can't be great for the kids' morale.
