Brazil legend Pele has raised eyebrows by claiming Lionel Messi is not as good as Neymar.

Messi won the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2009 and scooped the inaugural FIFA Ballon d'Or in 2010 and 2011.

He has thrust his form yet higher this season and took his goals tally for the campaign to 61 in Barcelona's win over Getafe on Tuesday night.

The Argentina superstar has won a raft of club honours with Barca but has yet to deliver on the international stage. This has not halted comparisons between Messi and two of the game's greats: Pele and Diego Maradona.

Pele, though, is of the opinion that not only is Messi below the level of himself and Maradona, he is also convinced Messi has to raise his game in order to be as good as 20-year-old Santos forward Neymar.

"Now everyone is talking about Messi; he is a star. But [to be the best ever] he must first become better than Neymar," Pele said. "At the moment Messi is just more experienced."

Crazy crazy.

I think you got the wrong quote. What he actually said was:

"Now everyone is talking about Messi; he is a star. But [to be the best ever] he must first become Brazilian," Pele said. "At the moment Messi is just Argentinian."

Ha, yeah, was going to say something similar.

HA HA ... priceless mate.

ha ha! he might as well have said that, we all know that's what he means.

Ken summed it up really well. There's too big of a rivalry between the countries.

I went travelling around America a couple of years ago and met this lad from Brazil who claimed the same thing.
He was convinced I thought he was talking about Nilmar too when I scoffed at his suggestion.
Pele was a bit good like, but he talks absoloute bollocks (no pun intended) and has done for years. I remember him claiming Nicky Butt was one of the best players in the world.

But Nicky Butt was one of the greatest players in the world ;-)

If messi wins a world cup I think he's in with a shout for best ever. Currently I still feel its maradona and Pele. Neymar has done fuck all hasn't he?

The best footballer who will ever play the game never won a World Cup because he happened to be from Norn Iron.

As for Messi, I think he's as good as Maradona already. Don't think he's quite in Pele's class - not as strong or as good in the air.

Neymar has scored something like 90 odd goals ... More I think than Messi scored with Barca by the time he was 20 ... but playing for Santos doesn't say much.

Messi's not strong? How often is he knocked off the ball? He's not great in the air, but he isn't bad at all ...

I think Pele should have gone to Europe ... I don't think playing in Brazil, in a time noted for its heavy corruption, lets me view him on the same level as Maradona (who actually led teams that weren't supposed to win).

Messi seems to have his head in the right place, his attitude and mentality seem to be spot on. I think this will mean he will soon be regarded as the best ever.

You could have all the talent in the world but it's useless if you end up like how Maradonna or Best did.

Show me where I said "Messi's not strong". However, I stand by the comparison between him and Pele in that respect. In Pele's era defenders got away with massively more than they do now. To take just one example, Pele was hacked out of the 1966 World Cup over here. He came back stronger than ever in 1970 and helped that great team to victory. I could be wrong, but I can't see Messi standing up to such treatment in the same way.

I don't agree. For one thing, though those two did ultimately go off the rails, they hardly had useless careers themselves. For another, I don't think it's careers one's judging when asking who was the greatest. For me it's each individual player's range of top-class skills, and Best could do more different things at a higher level than anybody else, ever.

Messi (& Ronaldo for that matter) get hacked non-stop nowadays. The amount of times he avoids it is phenomenal, but often times he plows right through it (low center of gravity like most of the Argie shorties - Tevez, Aguero etc).

I don't know if we'd look at Pele the same way today had he spent 10 years in Europe ... That's not taking away from his abilities, it's just giving an edge to a player like Maradona (who took more physical abuse than Messi or Pele I think)

Except scoring goals like Messi ... or dishing out assists like Messi ...

I don't, I'm afraid, and being an old geezer I saw them all play.

God these debates are so tedious.

We could end up with a player who scored a 1000 goals a season and he still wouldn't be as good as Player X from the past that someone watched whilst growing up for whatever reasons they come up with.

It's best just to stick with "best of his era" and then it's easier to define the context for the discussion.

Best in the 60s Pele
70s ???
80s Maradona
87-89 Barnes
90s Fat Ronaldo
00s Ronaldinho?

Where's the fun in that!?
