Actually they could both be true. As he said above - after the world cup - whereas United could have come in later.

Alternatively neither could be true.

English clubs back then didn't tend to buy any foreign players did they? He wasn't the only non-British player worth having. If we had gone for him then I'd have thought us, United and probably various other English teams would have been in for other foreign players. At least one would have been successful you'd have thought!

Anyway, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Its not like Sheffield United failing to sign Maradona. We didn't do badly back then even without Pele!
