Our squad....

Is it the most well balanced squad we've had since Kenny's first reign?

If you think about it, we have proper wingers, strikers that can score more than 20 plus, defenders, defensive mid fielders and attacking mid fielders. And we have pace.

Under all our past managers we were always one player/position short.

Our midfield in an unbalanced shambles, but generally... Suppose were not that bad

The defensive side of the team needs work, I don't think we look balanced at all in that respect.

It's bizarre really, considering how good agger and Skrtel were last year

I said it at the time and I'll say it now: our defence was good last year because we defended in numbers, now we don't.

Its a shambles in defence and midfield but we have players who are worth 10m plus in those positions playing in their strongest roles. We do not have many players out of position

True, on paper we should be very well balanced, but in practice we're very unbalanced. Defending is an issue and our midfield needs a lot of work (in that some players can't play with each other)

Think lucas Atm is the massive weak link.

We're pretty well covered with decent players in every position apart from a DM, we don't have one, a ball winning one.
But for a change we've got players for every position and options on the bench, maybe even match winning options.

Balanced????? Proper wingers?????? We have downing who contributes zilch and sterling on the wing who is raw and fresh.

I think on paper yes it is most balanced.

However I think we are too open when defending. Is it the system? The personnel?

Not sure.

I think that's because we are told to attack a lot more often and in more numbers. last season under kenny when we got forward there was never enough players to stay up the pitch, as most players were in two-minds to either hold defensive line or join the attack. The problem could also be to do with the increased pace of opposition front men - against Arsenal we were staritng to defend quite deep and in numbers but it did not work out for us, the speed of movment of the opposition causes us problems.

The problem we have is that we have too much "RAW" talent in the team, and although we have players with ability, they lack the game intelligence that we had with the players under Rafa's rule. You could argue that Macharano was not that talented, and Alonso was slow - but they had really good footballing brains that more than compensated for the things they lacked. In many ways much of what we do now is rushed, and we cannot CONTROL the game for long periods of time - which is not the necessarily just attacking but keeping the ball out of dangerous areas and forcing errors from the opposition. I think there is a great balance in the team - but we just to learn to focus for the whole game and not live on good moments in a game.

The ambition of our purported system of play, which is very difficult to achieve, relies on our ability to hold the ball, our midfield doesn't consistently do it because we've not had a very consistent midfield formation, and a number of the members of that midfield are either not good, or are off form depending on how optimistic you are.

When we can't hold possession, our system of play will always put our defense under significant amounts of pressure. They are more exposed. Our defense isn't good enough to deal with this pressure. We've had MANY more times the instances where our defense has to make difficult split second decisions at pace. We spend too much time on this board wondering who was at fault for each of the instances, when the problem is one step previous in the causal chain. Of course, when it does come to those decisions they fail. They also fail on set pieces routinely, which is inexcusable.

If we get out of rhythm, and go a goal down, we look awful because it snowballs. When we go a goal up early against a bad team, it snowballs as well. We don't have consistency because our CM in particular doesn't manage highly contested games, and we aren't good enough and consequently confident enough, to force our style of play on teams that offer more resistance.

The good news is that we seem to have fixed one problem without significantly worsening any of the others. We're now scoring more goals, and are capable of putting shit teams to the sword.

We were at our most balanced when we came 2nd under Rafa.
Our current side is absolute gash compared to that team.
Our midfield of Mascher, Alonso and Gerrard hasn't been surpassed. Riera ha more end product than Sterling. Kuyt had way, way more end product than Downing. Pepe was better. Our defense conceded way less goals.
We've got one of the lowest points tally in our history this season. The season we came second was, and still remains the record highest points we've achieved.

So no, we've not got the most balanced squad since Kenny quit the first time round.
10m per player or not.

That is down to our system. Work well against a team like Norwich coming to Lie low and defend. Doesn't work against a team like Oldham who want to have a go.
