Hodgson makes shock move for former star

Last updated: 31st July 2010

Skysports.com understands Liverpool are lining up a shock move to bring Fabio Aurelio back to the club.

Aurelio left Anfield earlier this summer after failing to agree a new contract on a pay-as-you- play deal.

Aurelio made 71 Premier League appearances for Liverpool during his four seasons at the club, but his progress was hampered by injuries, restricting him to just eight league starts last term.

The Brazilian departed on a free transfer and was linked with a move back to his native Brazil, but he has yet to find a new club.

Liverpool have failed to bring in a replacement for Aurelio despite being linked with a host of names, including Maynor Figueroa and Paul Koncheskey.

However, it appears Aurelio could in line for a sensational return to Anfield as Roy Hodgson is ready to offer him a deal to solve his problems at left-back.

Hodgson is believed to be an admirer of the South American and Aurelio has linked up with the rest of the Liverpool squad in Germany for their pre-season friendly with Borussia Moenchengladbach .

He has according to the rumours that are doing the rounds, signed a pay as you play contract.

That won't cost us much, unless we ban playing football in the garden with his children.

Fabio Aurelio has been reunited with his former Liverpool team mates this evening after agreeing a new deal with the club.

The Brazilian travelled to Germany ahead of tomorrow's final pre-season friendly with Borussia Monchengladbach to link up with Roy Hodgson's squad despite leaving Anfield earlier this summer after failing to agree to a new pay-as-you-play contract.

Aurelio, 30, was signed from Valencia by Rafael Benitez four years ago on a free transfer and made 110 appearances for Liverpool but spent regular intervals on the sidelines after rupturing his achilles against PSV Eindhoven in April 2007.

Hodgson had looked at signing Aurelio during his time as Fulham manager when the defender's contract was not renewed at the end of last season.

The new Liverpool manager returned his attention to Aurelio as Emiliano Insua's imminent switch to Fiorentina and the failed deal for Luke Young, which broke down due the Aston Villa man's failure to agree personal terms, meant that Liverpool had no recognised left-backs.

Hodgson is planning to return to Craven Cottage to make an approach to his former club for Paul Konchesky once Insua's move to La Viola is completed, but has been warned off a move for Scott Parker by West Ham United manager Avram Grant.

The former England international has been touted as a replacement for Javier Mascherano, who is expected to formalise a move to Inter Milan in the next fortnight, and is the subject of interest from both Liverpool and the Hammers' local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

But Grant is adamant that the 29-year-old will remain at Upton Park, where he is considered a focal part of the club's plans.

"He is a good player and it doesn't surprise me that many good teams would want him as he could play for any team in the Premier League," said Grant.

"But we have plans for next season, not for one season for all the team.

"We have a vision about the club to have West Ham in a good place and good football and he is a big important part for this project."

Anyone know if he's any good?

Another Aquilani I heard.

We will still need a left back good enough for the first team for the 50% of the games that he isn't fit for but personally, and I know there are lots of posters who don't like Fabio( and some of them aren't keen on Aurelio either 😉) I would welcome him back as an excellent member of the squad.

Decent defender, decent going forward, intelligent and experienced, pity he is made of delph china.

If he can stay fit itbis a good move for a good player, just how fucking broke are we though!! Im pleased and shocker in equal measure.

yeah... we've signed a Brazillian left back... that's greta news.

Don't mind Aurellio, but we wil need someone elseas well as him... because the one thing you can be sure of is... he will get injured.

Actually... maybe Roy will play him in central midfield like Benites did every now and then.... *cough*

I'm somewhat happy we resigned Aurelio. He's a decent player when fit. I bet Lucas is overjoyed.

It's official -

Liverpool have confirmed they have re-signed Fabio Aurelio after the defender put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the club.

The Brazilian appeared to have brought his Reds career to an end after leaving the club following the expiry of his contract in May.

However, Aurelio was offered the chance to earn a new deal with the club by boss Roy Hodgson and, after impressing both the technical staff and medical team at Melwood, has agreed a contract until 2012.

Hodgson told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I asked the club to find out whether Fabio had found a new club.

"When we ascertained that he hadn't, we invited him back to Melwood so both myself and my staff, and the medical team could properly assess the player.

"We were both very impressed and I am delighted we were able to re-sign Fabio."

Aurelio was included in the Liverpool travelling party that set off for Sunday's friendly with Borussia Moenchengladbach earlier today.

They're partying like it's 1999 on RAWK. Talk about overreactions...

From my recollections 2002 and 2005 were much better years to celebrate

Good one!

It's a little bit embarrassing but a good move nonetheless. Aurelio is a good player when fit and if he's on a pay as you play deal, we won't end up losing out quite as badly when he's out injured.

It would be nice to still see us sign a top quality first teamer though but I'm guessing that won't be happening this summer.

Ha ha ha

Well I'm chuffed. A decent LB. Hopefully Dr. No came to Anfield with magic dust in his duffel bag to fix our oft injured stars.

Who knows, this may just be the making of Fabio!

Er, I hate to pee on the parade here, but the Treble year was 2001.

You don't remember what happened in 2002?

AURELIO HAS FREAK INJURY WHILE RE-SIGNING FOR LIVERPOol
The Times

Roy Hodgeson's rebuilding plans suffered a major setback today when major signing Fabio Aurelio injured his groin while smiling after re-signing for the club. There are early indications that this may prompt Hodgson to enter the transfer market once again and sources are reporting that a surprise move to bring Argentine left-back Emiliano Insua back to the club may be in the offing.

I bet he fucking dreads getting a hard on.

I would have thought Purslow, Broughton or Hicks himself would have assessed Fabio's fitness, I can't believe Woy would be given such a responsible duty.
