Say what you like about Spurs, they are incredibly reliable about letting you down.
There's a gritty, yet unshowy relentlessness to their failure. Not for them the blaze of glory defeat or heroic collapse. No. A quiet and determined, yet inevitable commitment to not succeeding is the Spurs way.
Oh, don't get me wrong, they're a good side. They have plenty of fine players. They outperform bigger, richer teams and have been a consistent Top 4 presence. Yet this has not made any difference to their mission statement of consistent, reliable failure.
"But Brendan!" they say, "look at Liverpool! What was the last trophy they won?"
Well, one only has to look at the historical success of Liverpool. The 19 league titles. Countless domestic cups. Five European Cups, the last of which is recent memory.
And we've been in European finals regularly. Yes, we've lost them, but the hope was there. The historical precedent and realistic expectation that we could win is entirely valid.
That is not Spurs. They have wonderful results in Europe, yes - the wins over Real Madrid under Redknapp and Pochettino for example - but this does not result in a rampaging surge to the final. No, no. The let down is more subtle, yet admirable. There IS no final, simply a meek and almost unnoticed capitulation at the next stage. They don't get to European Cup finals, because that would mean a modicum of genuine success, a threat of not failing.
And recent title challenges? We had a glorious tussle with Man City, nip and tuck, the huge Chelsea game, Gerrard slipping and then "Crystanbul".
Spurs? Chased Leicester (fucking Leicester) without ever actually getting close, Leicester went top, stayed top and Spurs...just...... quietly, inevitably failed.
With all of their typical, trademarked, relentless commitment to failing.
Never change.
