Modo

A contentious scando

Like I mentioned in another thread, he's won pretty much every major trophy a professional footballer can win and I have a feeling he was happier playing for Liverpool.

Alonso has now won:
A league title
A league cup twice
The Champions League
The World cup
The European Championships

How about it?
Do you think he'd come back?

Don't Modo, please don't. He's my favourite ever Liverpool player, I can't deal with the thought crossing my mind, I'll explode with childlike glee.

I'm sorry for giving you false hope but I like him too and we desperately need him.
£20 Million would probably get him back.

He wouldn't come back, he's in the first team at Real Madrid in his homeland whilst they're going through a mini footballing renaissance, he's sorted for his career.

Carry on playing with Benzema, Ronaldo, Di Maria et al in the sunshine or come back to rainy England and play with Downing and Carroll.

Yeah, I bet he's already been on the phone to his agent.

I loved Alonso, but there's no point in this. He wouldn't come back, and we should anyway be focused on finding younger players to build around.

If we want that kind of player, we should focus everything on trying to get Strootman, who's the closest thing around to a young Alonso.

haha, true.
We should give it a go anyway.

Alonso was a fine player and contributed hugely to the Rafa era who treated him like dirt at the end and the bloke still seems to have a soft spot for the club but he moved on and is winning titles so no reason for him to return. Remember his great performances and move on

I dunno - he has never won the PL and he seems like a Good guy - like he wouldnt play for other teams. I could see it if he wanted the PL. Wonder how he feels playing under Maureen vs Rafa

It's incidental, not ironic.

Why does everyone always finds the need to debate the credence of using irony? It's like the language trolls eyes light up whenever it's said. Regardless, there's certainly irony in the point of was making, it's just the context I said it in might have been a bit off.

I was going to post the same thing myself. It's very astute. I love that the song "Ironic" is only ironic because Alanis Morrisette clearly doesn't understand what ironic is. She's not alone, though - it's misused that way all the time. This is a classic example.

And sorry Mystic, I didn't mean to offend. I'm an editor, and these things bug me. Plus I guess I thought I might be helping you not to misuse the word in future.

Wasnt there a rumour he was very interested in returning last summer?
Given the chance I think he would.

Like in a being a Basque he'd never play for Real Madrid kinda way?
I met a basque girl in Thailand from San Sebastian, yes the same city Xabi's from. We started talking and I mentioned that I support Liverpool and asked if she knew Xabi. She said that she knew him and his younger brother but she was closer to his brother.
When I told her that Xabi was joining Real she was quite surprised. She he didnt think he'd join madrid because of their basque background.
