Until the invention of contraception, heterosexual sex purely for pleasure, without resulting in procreation, was an impossibility. So I don't think you can argue that the purpose of sex is not procreation.

Errr, a woman is only fertile at certain times of the month, so sex without procreation was possible long before the development of prophylactics.

If I am not wrong it is during those fertile period that women look for sex and sexual pleasure more than at other time... statistically, hormonally and scientifically? That is why the chance of survival of the human race increases. More sex, more likelihood of being fertilised. Even we male are attracted to woman during their fertile period. Even with prophylactics, the chances of being fertilised increased as the urgency for sex increases and we all throw caution to the wind during those amorous moments 😉 right?
