When Tal posts, you know it's bad. He (or she) only posts when people are angry, and frustrated. One can only hope we don't see him/her for a long time!

Sadly for everyone, including me, we probably will if our manager fails to learn from the same miserable, humiliating and frankly sackable mistakes that Ged and Rafa made in competitions we can win.

All managers make mistakes - I don't think today was 'humiliating,' the game wasn't lost because of his mistakes but more so because Sterling can't finish and Jones had his first major mistake since the Everton draw. Good managers, and hopefully Rodgers is well on the way to being that, will learn from this. I hope we see a massive response from the team.

Just to rub it in a little more. Take a look at the fat feker on the right below, their captain. He plays footie on his days off from working at Greggs.

We actually lost to a team with him in the starting line-up.

As you aren't from England you won't (I don't think?) fully appreciate just how shit teams can be at the bottom end of League One. Oldham had lost 7 of their last 8 games. A decent amataeur team would give them a good game. When a club of our history, supposed ambitions, and able to field a full team of internationals loses to a team that low down the football heirarchy, believe me, it's a total humiliation.

I concur that it would be wonderful to see a massive response from "the team". But, and it's a big but, it won't be the same team in the next match. You will have players returning who now have to provide a response to a result that wasn't anything to do with them. The reserves we played today will be dropped and won't get a chance to make amends and the future of some of them will be questioned. Meanwhile, the returning players will be under more pressure to restore some pride than they would have if we'd won today. It's a fuck-up in every way.

Rogers said post match that he was 'really disappointed' with the younger players. Gave them a chance and let themselves down etc

I lived in your wonderful country for 2 years, so yes - I know how shit they are. But this is what happens in 'knock out games' as the Yanks call 'em - one team came out flat, took none of their chances and gifted the other team with chances. The other team came out as if their season depended on this performance. History means nothing. It's not humiliation - this happens. It's an important lesson for the team to learn, and grow from. It's an important lesson for Rodgers, and if RW's comments are right re: disappointment with youngsters, it will serve him and the kids well. Perform, or wait even longer for a chance.

It's a bad loss yes. But I'd happily accept it if we get 4 (or 6) points in the coming two games.

The problem with this 'the team will learn from it' is that it's always 'tomorrow' when such results are supposed to pay off and those who played in them transformed into better players because they went through that experience. Really though, history tells us that our shite players stay shite and get shipped out. Meanwhile, we've still won nothing. The opposite of that, or course, was Mr Dalglish and his strategy of sending out a strong team to try and win the trophy we are competing for. And look what happened there.

Personally, I'm delighted for them.

Always tommorow has a ring of truth to it for sure, ah well we can now focus on the europa league. Me, I don't think we need a season of losing every second or third game to become Liverpool again. I am also kind a delighted to see the romance of the game even at our expense

At a certain point these younger players need to step up and start taking responsibility for thid team. Stevie's not always going to be around to bail them out, and Suarez won't always be around at this rate.

Bit of a shithouse move that from Brendan. A part of today's frustration is that we have had physical strikers cause us problems all season. It is not a one off.

Long, Lukaku, Bobadilla, L.Traore, K.Jones, Bentheke, C.Cole, Welbeck & now Oldham. All had far too much 'physical' success vs #LFC this yr

I think they needed it. If Robinson can tell Suarez to fuck off then they can take the truth from their manager.

They don't need it though, Wisdom is still really young, as is Sterling, they've both got time on their sides and can be excused for hitting a bit of poor form, people can say what they want about the service today, but Borini, Sturridge and Suarez were all poor with what they did have of the ball (aside from the first goal), a few more experienced players let themselves down, it's a bit rich to be laying blame on a couple of kids and a few slightly more experienced players who've come in from the cold. It was an unsettled back line and lightweight midfield that got no protection. I'm all for not giving too much respect to lesser sides and going for the kill, but playing four attackers was going overboard.

If anything we'd have been better playing an experienced back bone and backline and then shuffling the forwards, giving the likes of Shelvey and Suso a go too, but having the likes of Carragher in there to organise things and guide the rest.

Good post.

In isolation today's results really is not that bad. Shit happens. Results like this are a part and parcel of football. However the thing which bothers me is that this season marginally physical strikers and sides have made our midfield and defense look like mugs. That is not an issue just with the youngsters. Stoke and Oldham have provided a blueprint on how to own us.

If they don't have the mental strength to take justifiable criticism from their manager then they don't stand much of a chance having successful careers at a big club. If they see it for what it is, namely criticism from their manager on a day we were super shit then they will benefit from it. The manager might feel that they need bringing down a peg or two.

I don't disagree with you on BR's team selection and the piss poor defending and weak as shit midfield. As I have said before, if the manager doesn't fix those massive flaws, flaws which every man and his dog has been pointing out, then he won't last as our manager.

In saying that BR was correct in critiquing the younger players doesn't detract from the fact he was the origin of the bollocks we saw today. He got the team wrong, failed to rectify his mistake of Coates and STILL hasn't fixed our defensive problems and weak midfield.

Although I wouldnt have played Allen, Coates, Robinson or Sterling and would have played Carragher, Agger, Lucas and Gerrard. The fact is that team should take oldham to pieces.
Very disappointed today.
Not with the fact we are out of the cup, I couldnt care less about the cup. Im just disappointed at this one step forward two steps back shit.

This is the season that just keeps on taking.

I agree lads, but if we're talking about justifiable criticism, singling out young inexperienced players while letting weathered pros off the hook is just a fucking copout.

They were the shittest players though mate.
Our forwards did their bit, but errors from Robinson, Coates and Jones cost us the game.
