So close, yet so far away.

INTER MILAN failed with a deadline day move for Liverpool midfielder Lucas.

Former Anfield boss Rafa Benitez made an audacious move to take the Brazilian on loan, but his offer was refused by Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson has seen more faces leave than arrive at Anfield since his appointment with Liverpool recording a net profit on their summer deals.

As well as the sale of Javier Mascherano, Hodgson has sought to clear the decks of low quality squad players.

But he knows he's at least one major player short of being where he needed to be in his fight to reclaim a top-four spot.

There may be further reshaping of the squad when the transfer window re-opens with several deals being revisited.

Is this really true?

Well, I'm no fan of Hodge, but I feel quite confident that, while he is nowhere near as gifted as Benitez, the genius that is tinged with madness that most top managers are tainted with, does not always apply to more mediocre ones

Ie, I have to be confident that Granddad will look at Lucarse objectively, and realise what we all know: Lucarse is fucking shite

I do think that Hodgson isn't the biggest fan of Lucas. He didn't start against Arsenal and he wasn't going to start against Man City. So I've got reason to hope.

If this is true, though, Benitez *IS* fucking mental. Why for the love of god would you want to sign this twat twice!?

I suppose his stubborn reliance on Lucarse last season could be partly explained by Aquilani being one of the worst signings in our entire history, but it doesn't tell the entire story

I've said it lots of times, but Lucarse is the manifestation of all that was mental and shit about Benitez's reign at Liverpool, and was one of the main reasons I wanted him sacked

Now obviously Old Uncle Roy is nobody's idea of a Liverpool manager, and is the least inspiring and ordinary managerial appointment in my lifetime, but I feel confident he will at least ensure that this season is the last in lucarse's fucking shit Liverpool career.

And if that's all Granddad achieves (and let's face it, judging by his record, he won't win anything) I will be quite happy

The comments Hodgson has made about Lucas so far in the media suggest he doesn't particularly rate him and wouldn't be averse to selling him.

Circumstances have so far ensured Lucas has gotten a few games. It'll be interesting to see what happens once Poulsen has caught up in terms of match fitness and Meireles settles in.

i dont see why we would let him go on loan?!!?

Its a waste of a squad player. Anyone know how many years he has left on his contract?

Sending him on loan to Inter would likely reduce his price as he would rarely get a game...Selling him for 8 million in January and rubbing our hands clean of him using 50 pound notes will do.

I don't know. He's been with the club three years already and I don't remember his contract being renewed so I'd sort of expect the usual 4 year-ish deal to be in place i.e. only a year or so left.

Anyone know?

Why would Inter Milan leave it until deadline day?

Benitez knows the squad situation at LFC well enough to know that we don't have loads of midfielders to pick from.

Sounds like a column filler, where are the quotes?
