madness to contemplate breaking up the gerrard torres axis. if masherano leaves than a central midfielder has to arrive.

Step forth please Mr. Lucas P. Leiva.

We were top of the table with 4-4-2.
We finished 2nd with 4-5-1.
Madness.

If that's the way you're looking at it... we might as well sell Torres or Stevie because we were top of the league when one of those were unavailable.

And when they were both available we finished 2nd as you say.

I came to Anfield in december to see Kuyt alone up front and tracking back to defend on corners, then saw Lucas come on for the last 10 minutes...against Hull.
These kind of decisions cost us the title last season.
We need another top striker.

If we lost Masher, Eto'o would go a very, very long way into appeasing me.

---Torres-------Eto'o---------
---------Gerrard

= Frightening.

You probably should have gone there in April/May - the weather was much better and the football much much better. ;D

And, oddly enough, we were playing with one up front.

Still, I agree that I'd take Masch for Eto'o + cash. I think Mascherano is more easily replaceable than Xabi.

Thats very debatable. Gerrard was playing as a striker. And Alonso behind them
Thats why we were better and scoring a lot of goals.

this is absolute nonsense and besides, illegal for him to talk directly to a player under contract. that is not how things work. no doubt it's just Barce tapping up via the media again, expect the same story to appear in their rag Sport and more articles. they did the same with Torres. if you ignore it long enough they'll go away and move on to the next target

masch comes into his own in the european games.

i'd also trade him for eto'o and look towards a new defensive but more dynamic central midfielder.

Haha @ 20 million. And the rest.

Not sure how much cash is proposed.
Anyway, I'm not sure I'd take Eto'o over Mascherano. Mascherano is a beast who holds our DM and covers all over the field. I don't think Xabi will be able to do his job, and I'm not sure we can so easilly find someone who can.
As for Eto'o - he's been great for Barca, but there's no guarantee he can reproduce his scoring feats in England. I'm also not sure how he and Torres will combine.

You're back. Welocme.

Eto'o would be ace. It's not a case of playing him and Torres together, it's about having the firepower and strength in depth, especially with Fernando's dodgy hamstrings and unrelenting schedule. Won't happen anyway.

with 3 years left on his contract Masher is going no where and neither is Alonso, despite all the invented stories

World-class players usually end up combining.

But even if they don't there's still enough individual talent between them to win matches.

Spain still won the EC without Villa and Torres operating in harmony

And as much as I love Masher, he's rather specialist and I think we could replace him.

anybody who watched us play this season will know that we played by far and away our best football towards the end of the season. Whilst playing 4231. Solid, exciting, attacking football with plenty of goals and some superb results. And yet some folk want us to go back to 442. Madness.

A serious question, who was the last "top" club team to win a major trophy playing a standard 4-4-2?
[/quote]

Man Utd in 2006-7?

Yernited?

Sir Ryan, Kanchelski's, etc.

I think formations have always just been a means to an end and to win titles you need to be flexible and need good players who can slot into a variety of roles. It's not a rigid game.

and there's a time when 451 at home against a team of a keeper, 9 defenders and a big man up front is plain stupid.
