no new stadium

Someone did a great article a couple of weeks ago on expanding Anfield, I think it was Tompkins?

Anyway, he explained how one of the stands could be built up in the season, sort of back to front, so the part there now can still be used, then finished in the summer close season, THEN, when Anny Road needs to be closed, the attendace would be close to what it was.

He also had a scheme where Anny Road is built over the existing road and a tunnel could be made for road traffic, or if the club could buy a piece of land the road could be moved around the new foot print, giving us a 60,000 seat stadium right where we are.

I'll try dig it out.

the tunnel under anfield road? that will take you ages, asbo.

Haha anyway the road stays where it is now and the Stadium is built over it, just to make that clear, wastes a lot of space though that could contain a shop or toilets or whatever.

I was hoping for a new stadium too but for purely selfish reasons. As it is going to Anfield is quite uncomfortable for me and takes away from the experience if being at the game. If I don't get an end seat or a seat at the bottom row in front of the pitch my 6'7 frame becomes a real ball ache.

Even with your 6'7 frame, you've got to look at the bigger picture.

A decisions hasn't been made but by all accounts its looks like innovation for renovation.

Anfield is our spiritual home and I'll be chuffed if we stay.

Capacity wouldn't be a problem because a winning team fills stadiums. However, additional corporate suites would bring in revenue.

One way of bridging the revenue gap is increased marketing partnerships/sponsorships and increased merchandising.

The commercial side of the business is fairly vibrant and we are thriving.

I wouldn't have titled this 'No new Stadium', I'd have titled it.

'We are Staying in our home', its a glass half full thing.

Anyway I'm fucking made up we are staying at Anfield, and when the 2 sides that are getting renovated are up and running, it will be a fucking formidable place for visiting teams to come.

The Lower centenary is where I've sat in all the games I've been to. It's not like it's gonna stop me from going, just felt like having a whinge.

Well, I guess I'm going to have to be the asshole here. If H&G had delivered this news, I am convinced that many people would be furious. People were furious when they scaled back from their original plans even. People were convinced that a new stadium was needed, that a rebuild was impossible with a significant increase in capacity.

With good reason too, from everything we've ever seen on the subject.

I'm not going to come in here and say that this represents a big misstep, because I have to see the plans first, but Anfield isn't Fenway. It isn't in an area like Fenway. I have trouble envisaging a bourgeois pedestrian area around Anfield with lots of foot traffic and commerce. Bless them if they can accomplish all of those things, it's amazing if their experience will allow them to do this correctly without starting from scratch. I just don't see it though. They are going to throw away a significant amount of money in assistance by doing it this way, and throw away all the work done on plans in the new area. Which means that the rebuild must be massively cheaper to make sense. Perhaps they don't think a new stadium would pay for itself and would represent too much risk for them. Either way, they are looking to shell out far less money on it.

Not true for me.

I always hoped we'd redevelop. I never bought the arguments against.

I'm sorry you are having a problem with seating space.

I was more focussing on the 6'7 frame/big picture *gag* aspect. :-\

You would think after all the tall jokes Ive had aimed at me all my life I would have picked up on that 🙁

The new stadium is going to be a massive 80,000 seater floating leviathan that will hover above the city like the mother ship from V. A shuttle service will run regularly from the Pier Head, Stanley Park, Allerton Roads and Lime Street for all the wools. VIP customers will be able to teleport from Orrys on County Road.

I'm torn two ways here. On the one hand, having been around from the Shankly years and stood on the Kop before Anfield went all-seater I have the kind of attachment to the place that one would expect, so the idea of staying there appeals to me. On the other hand, we need to catch up with the Mancs and the earning power of Old Twatford, and I question whether we can without a new stadium. FSG are the experts and we have to trust them, but they'll need to do their sums VERY carefully before making final decisions about this.

Capacity could be 65,000 to 75,000 (it could get to 85,000 if really needed) at Anfield with both unmodified areas expanded, and the footprint would not need to be a lot bigger.

There is talk of either building over the exsiting road way at Anfield Road end and incorporating a tunnel for traffic, or purchasing a small area of Stanley Park to loop the road around the back of the ground after building on the road there now.
