For Bolton Wanderers

At 5pm on Friday August 23, the completion of the sale of the football club and the hotel had been agreed by all parties and undertakings had been issued by all solicitors except those of Ken Anderson.

Devastatingly, on Saturday morning that deal collapsed. At this stage, there seems little point in apportioning blame because that makes no difference to the staff, players, management, supporters and the community who have once more seen their club taken back to the brink.

My team have spent the last 48 hours working around the clock, striving to get a deal back on track and trying to convince the parties still in conflict that the very fate of Bolton Wanderers depends on them finding a compromise.

The EFL have made their position clear by insisting on a 5pm deadline on Tuesday for a deal to be completed or give compelling reasons for an extension. They have also written to everybody concerned in the process to underline that sense of urgency.

On Sunday evening, there was some tentative dialogue but we are still some way from reaching a solution. Therefore, I am appealing to those parties whose position seems intractable to do everything to reach a compromise.

In just over 24 hours, the club will have its membership of the EFL revoked. Over and above that, the club is currently not in a position to carry on trading and, as such, the process of closing down the company will commence on Wednesday.

This will ultimately lead to its liquidation, the expulsion of the club from the EFL and the inevitable loss of over 150 jobs. More than that, it will devastate a community for whom the football club is a beacon of hope and expectation.

I reiterate, unless there is a change of position from any of the parties involved, the process of closing down the club and ultimately placing Bolton Wanderers into liquidation will begin this week.

Absolutely mental.

You can understand sometimes when a small club in a town or city with two clubs may struggle and be unsustainable, but Bolton should be more than fine. It wasn't that long ago that Okocha, Anelka, Djorkaeff, Campo, etc, were taking loads of points off top end clubs.

Completely shit for the fans. Hopefully they can get a new club together and resolve something from this mess.

It is shocking this news. I used to hate us playing them away with big Sam in charge. No idea things were this bad.

Isn't Bolton a rugby city or was it Wigan?

My Dad took me to a game there in 1980 - saw them beat Nottingham Forest 1-0, and then the other division one results came up at the end of the game - Liverpool had won at Goodison, and United had lost 6-0 at Ipswich. Great day!

I've had a bit of a soft spot for them ever since the time, a good few years ago, when they had a little run of wins against ManUre, and next time Bolton played them the Bolton fans started singing "Can we play you every week?".

Hope they can still make it through, but it doesn't look good.

The blame should fall at EFL or whoever for not regulating ownership effectively you'd think. That they seem to allow nefarious owners to take charge so often suggests they aren't learning

Not arsed. Time moves on. We shouldn't get sentimental about clubs that either made bad decisions or didn't move with the times. Plenty more important things to worry about than BWFC.

Say that to Bolton fans. Football is identity to a lot of small towns and cunts riding over it for a quick buck isn't to be disregarded
Pity for the fans but that's life. Far worse things going on in life than the demise of BWFC. It's the same for any business, you fuck up you pay the price and there will be another one standing in line to take your place.

Him and the three on the board who outvoted the two cowboys. Those two met their match in Broughton especially, but even Purslow and Ayre (who've had their critics in other respects, and rightly so) stood up to be counted when we really needed that.

Anyone remember being on here on the day this went to the High Court? We had an all-day thread on it, like some humungous match thread, and I for one was as chuffed at the end as I am after a big win.

Surprised that a local council or something didn't come to an arrangement to keep the stadium and find a way to run it grassroots style. I had a great away trip to Bolton in a game we won with Torres bagging a brace. The train from Liverpool to Bolton (changing in Manchester) was chaos and I thought it was going to derail from the bounce chant!

Shame to see this happening all over the place - in the lower leagues are clubs struggling to get attendances or are wage demands of players at those levels now becoming too much? If so I wonder whether wage caps in the EFL (Championship - League 2) need introducing to help preserve these clubs?

It is a shame... Bolton has long traditions and identity and should been able to keep it running. Poor decision is probably the reason for the downfall more than "Modern day mechanism" but I feel for the fans who are the right owners of the club.

it was an October day in 2010. I was working in toronto, and I was GLUED to the news on our threads.

The drama had been building for months almost years. How could these wankers get away with this.

Purslow, Ayre, and Broughton didn't go with the owners. It was a insurrection of the best kind. Had Hicks and Gillette been any good, they could have bought those votes of those three with future promises of board memberships and investments. Usually how it works. But they were so disorganized. And Ayre and Purslow and Broughton had a decent spine. A rare thing.

And here we are - nine years later. Champions of Europe again. In with a shout of the league (Having that expectation is in itself an achievement, we should not take for granted)

So yeah JJ, I remember it well my friend (Wipes away a tear).

Thank you Purslow, Broughton and Ayre. All gone at this point, and not all highly regarded.

But we owe 'em all one.

Decent spine.... that is a very modest statement my friend.

I remember someone fooling almost everyone by posting that it had been adjourned until the next day....bastard

Ha. I'd forgotten that - prolly felt murderous at the time but now, "all passion spent", I can't help having a laugh. 😀

In that case what's the point in discussing football at all?

I remember the days when we would given Bolton their annual bashing at anfield... 'You will never win at the Reebok'... The Bolton fans would cry..

Neither will Bolton again it seems..
