NFL Regular Season Thread 2010

Highlights:

The d-line (again). Suh makes so much space for the others.

Best looks like he could break a big play at anytime. I can hardly remember what that feels like.

No interceptions from Stafford!

Calvin is still fucking brilliant.

Romo would have shut everyone up if they had beaten the Giants. Instead he shovelled one right to McQuarters and lost the game.

You're right though. The Steelers don't usually put up with that sort of thing. Perhaps with all the messing about among the Rooney brothers behind the scenes they've decided that the continuity of a SB winning QB is the most important thing here. If they're going to cut him, the end of the season is probably better as far as drafting a replacement is concerned. The QB class for next year's draft looks to be RIDICULOUS.

I like how Jones has been clearing up the team by signing loons he can rehabilitate. Never thought of it like that before. Genius. Worked out well...

Incidentally, I applaud him for Bryant. And it baffles me how the Dolphins front office didn't see some kind of sanction for their interview of the lad. That was totally outrageous. I guess Roger is only interested in throwing the book at players.

Stafford needs a break out season. He has a few toys to play with now and the teamis looking stronger all round. Who'd have thunk the Lions would successsfully draft their way out of the shit? At the same time that the Bears traded away all their draft picks for a QB who goes blind in the red. Amazing!

Was that when they asked if his mother was a prostitute or something?

Incidentally, see LeGarette Blount was at it again? If he can't handle his own team mates, who knows what'll happen with the opposition.

Last years draft was the best I can ever remember them having. Two first rounders who look the business, and Delmas and Levy were great pick ups. Maybe even Hill... Some CB's and a LT next year please...

If Stafford can cut down on his interceptions when he panics under pressure, he could be the real deal.

Yeah. Completely unacceptable question if you ask me. Never would have asked a white quarterback prospect the same thing.

Blount is great. I love him. Love how he returned after his reinstatement for the Ducks and blew open the Civil War. This is getting blown all sorts of out of proportion though. There was a major punch up in Cards training a few weeks ago and everyone was saying it was a good thing. Blount does it and it's only seen through the prism of last year. I suppose he made his own bed with that though. He's a fucking unit mind, and can run over people. I'd have the mad punchy bastard in Chicago.

Yeah, the Lions had a fight in OTA and everyone thought it was great cos they "wanted to win". Then they had another, which didn't go down so well.

Don't really blame Romo for the loss - Had Fasano made the end zone grab, or Crayton dropped that pass on the 20 yard line with miles of open space - we would have won. But the Giants were the team of destiny that year - a defense playing as if they were pro bowlers and Manning making the plays he needed to make to lead the team onwards. Oh well, at least he shagged a rather hot, albeit insane, blonde.

Who are the big names?

Well ... the 1st season was fantastic, 13-3. 2nd season was poor and then he cleaned the team up. He tried, realized it wasn't going to work and adapted it accordingly.

for a second, I thought you meant Antonio - who I still rate highly. Dez was a great move. THe way the 'bOys staff talks about him, you'd think he WAS our #1 guy already. I hope he turns out as well as that other great NFC WR who team after team refused to draft (including the Boys) due to a questionable character.

Patrick Peterson out of LSU is a fucking beast at CB. Look out for him, and also Prince Amukamara who was in that ridiculous Huskers defence with Suh. You'll probably need to have a fairly shit season to secure either of them though. Aaron williams of Texas is also a decent prospect though. He'll probably be in the 20s somewhere in the first round.

Like predicting first round picks for next year now is going to make me look anything other than fucking retarded...

Locker's the main QB I guess. Will Pryor be coming out for this one? I don't know much about him, other than his "everyone kills people" comment when defending Vick 😉

Locker is at the top of the lists now, but if Andrew Luck comes out next year I think he is a far better player. Ryan Mallet will also probably come out early as the QBs will want to avoid the rookie payscale in any new CBA the following season. Pryor is good, but everyone went batshit over his Rose Bowl. If he plays like that regularly, then yeah. But we'll see. There's a lot of pressure on him right now. Christian Ponder at FSU is a very good player. There will be a lot of attention on Case Keenum at Houston (their schedule could see them go unbeaten) and Andy Dalton at TCU, who is a really improved player.

I really like Kellen Moore at Boise. If they go unbeaten again this year (which they will if they beat Virginia Tech in the opener) then they'll definitely be in a BCS game and will probably be in the national unless Texas and Ohio go unbeaten too. If the breaks go for them and they play for the title, then he will be a serious Heisman candidate. He's a tad small though, which might scare off pro scouts (under 200lbs). If he bulks up though I think he's a genuine prospect.

And there are a ton of players who will make solid back up signal callers. McElroy at Bama, Nathan Enderle, Ricky Stanzi, Scott Tolzien if he comes out. Then you have Tyrod Taylor and Colin Kaepernick, who both play in gadget offences. Taylor has decent hands and might be a pick up as a WR/wildcat QB. Kaepernick is loads of fun to watch at Nevada (the most entertaining college team last year - yards all over the fucking place) but he would get smoked in the pros. He'll go into the draft but I don't see anyone taking him early. If at all. Might go as an unsigned free after. As might Mitch Mustain. He's a USC QB but will get no field time because of Barkley (unless the kid gets nuked), but any USC QB is pro-trained so will interest someone either late on or as a free.

I remember about this time last year some draft site had Snead going #1 to St. Louis, and now he's just been released by the Bucs after going undrafted!

edit: so the CBA won't be in time for a rookie salary cap in 2011? We can't afford all these high picks every year 🙁

Yeah, I chuckled heartily when I saw Snead at number one on a few early mocks. Last year's QB class wasn't all that, but it wasn't that much of a train wreck.

I'm not even sure the CBA will be done in time to have a 2011 season. Not a full one anyway. But given this season has already started I doubt if it is agreed that it will take in next season. So we might get another uncapped year and then the new CBA. There's a very real possibility that there will be no NFL or NBA next season. Which will be awesome for Div 1 football and basketball. They will be able to shift matches into scheduled prime time pro sports slots. Particularly the football. No way the networks let football get away. It's only here five months a year. The NCAA is probably praying for a shut out. Although, they also really want the rook cap. It'll solve a lot of problems related to illegal agent/player approaches in the colleges.

Fake football doesn't mean anything. The starters don't care. They just don't want to get hurt. I wouldn't read much into it.

Haynesworth - I'm trying to figure out exactly how retarded this bloke is. He's angling for a move as he wants no part of playing nose in a 3-4. But who does he think is going to take him after this avalanche of bullshit? Dan Snyder was dumb enough to pay him a king's ransom in the first place, but who is going to take that contract on? Hell, who could afford to? McNair in Houston maybe. Haynesworth and Williams in the same 4-3 looks exciting.

Looks like Kroenke is going to announce his take over of the Rams has been ratified today. He is a major player on the NFL's Los Angeles Stadium Working Group committee, which makes his bid for sole ownership interesting. There are major problems involved with moving a team back to the Coliseum, but the LA Times had a story about a proposed new stadium near the Staples Center which would be far more attractive to an NFL franchise.

Massive TV market, not so massive ticket market. This is the problem the Raiders had with the Coliseum - it's 90,000 seats, and they couldn't sell but 70-75,000, so they were blacked out of local TV markets all the time under the 72 hour rule.

If someone builds a nice new modern 65-70,000 seater stadium, then I reckon a franchise would move back there. Especially as the Rams are struggling now to sell tickets in Missouri. You have massive TV and commercial revenue opportunities in LA, and a city that would attract high profile players. It allows a parochial franchise to almost become a national team.

Ari Gold will make it happen.

You jest, but Casey Wasserman is in that episode and he is involved in the Staple Center stadium bid. Kroenke must know him well from that.

Right I've made my decision.

I thought about the Redskins for quite a while too, but I'm sticking with the 49'ers
