Move Gerrard back now and play Yossi in the hole!

I find it incredible that in 27 games (28 games now) gerrard has scored one goal v chelsea (a game we lost 4-1).

Ok, but whilst Lucas wasn't the reason we lost today, he provided NOTHING whatsoever to help us win / avoid defeat either...
I don't think there's any doubt that both Riera or Yossi give us FAR more then Lucas does, so the time has come (probably three weeks ago, tbh) to accept that it's better for the team to have Gerrard sit in the CM role beside Mascher and allow Yossi to play in the hole he vacates. It's what gives us the best chance to win NOW, regardless of what may change when Aquilani joins the team.

I mean, it's what ends up happening in the final fifteen minutes of a game we're not winning anyway, so Rafa obviously thinks it's for the best at THAT stage in the game... Why not start that way, then?

The same could be said of Riera, Gerrard and Torres at the very least.

Yesterday, sure.

But not practically every time they play, a la Senor Lucas.

the three 'A' should improve our ability to create chances and keep the ball

agger
aqualini
aurelio

I have had that opinion for a while, but after the two performances this week, I am now not too sure.

what do you mean?

To move Gerrard back and then move forward again in a few games would be wrong and might cause a little more confusion in the side than it would gain. Unfortunately I think we have to hold out like we are until Aquilani is fit.

It really isn't that complicated, though, is it.

Especially given Gerrard played there last week.

Any change involves some degree of risk but I think you (and Rafa, who - I suspect - shares this view) are being overly pessimistic here, especially given how often Stevie's played at CM in the past. Besides, Lucas is plainly not the answer whereas Stevie might be. It's got to be worth a try.

We play with two DM's to make the shape of our team more fluid. It allows as to go from having all but 3 players effecting the attacking play and attacking to 6 defensive players in a matter of 5 seconds. When we have the ball we play with 2 at the back, 1 in front (when its mascher we are more sound, when its Lucas I do see as small difference), and then if we give up possession it requires Johnson, Insua, DM who tried to help attack, to run back along with usually one attacking player. I like the system it really allows for a lot of interchange and so forth. Problem lies in who plays there when its Lucas and Masch we seem quite poor. We have romped past teams with Gerrard and Lucas in DM. I think the Masch Aqua could end up being cold but I wouldn't be worried about playing Gerrard in midfield.

Wasn't the 4-2-3-1 basically used so Rafa could incorporate Alonso, Mascher and Stevie whilst linking up effectively.

A formation should be built around the team, not the other way around.

Why?

Depends the manager. Wenger seems to alter his formation for the team but Ancelotti doesn't change his 4-1-2-1-2 for anything. If I was to build a formation for our team it would be so unbalanced.

Two balanced formations I could reasonably fit our team into is a 4-1-3-2 or a 4-1-4-1. Neither of which are used a lot and there's usually a reason for that kinda occurrence.

And I don't necessarily disagree, but it's not as matter of fact as that.

If I remember correctly, he built his Valencia team around his formation, and they fucking dicked us.

because... then you're putting square pegs in round holes for the sake of it.

Or buying certain players who fit a certain system.

I'd personally rather we had a given formation in mind before we purchased players, as opposed to a more reactionary approach which you suggest. Otherwise you end up with the Robbie Keane situation; the ultimate "square peg in a round hole".
