Just as a matter of interest i'd like to know who on here wants Downing to sign for us? I have no idea how you do one of those polls on here....

For me ...I'd prefer we didnt sign him even if we didn't sign anyone else for his position, but i have full blown Downing syndrome still and have bitter memories of people trying to argue for other players signings on the basis of stats.

IF he was called El Downing and played for Athletico people would be dry humping him.

do i want downing? not particularly, will he make the team better? yep, now that i think about it if he'll make the team better i guess i do want downing

This, although I would only take him if we had exhausted all our other better options and he was a reasonable price. I rate him higher than most though, and believe he is better than forum favourites such as N'zogbia.

Undecided I guess, I will let Kenny make up my mind.

If he was called Kendiego Maradona-Van bastencruyff I wouldnt want him as he is not good enough, just as Pennant on the back of a statistically excellent season at Birmingham was not good enough just as any run of the mill average winger is not good enough.

He's not good enough.

He isn't and we know it because we have all seen it.

Sweet fuck all to do with where he is from or what he is called. I had hoped we were going to start spending money more wisely and not make ridiculous buys just because they are cheapish and fill a gap.... if he isn't top quality or we can't get top quality then we should look for something else from within if need be. Ten years of averageness for 12M.... get fucked.

Thanks for doing a poll for me modo.

Kendiego Maradona-Van bastencruyff.....HAHAHAHA!!!

You're welcome.

Where does that lad Sterling play? why not blood him instead and save money in the bargain... it might well be off the deep end for him but ... at least there is a chance he might be good.

I want him, but not for the price being asked. I would happily pass for anything over 15 mil.

I think the negative opinion of Downing on this site is very similar to the one that was had on Milner when he was leaving Newcastle. And I think they will be proven wrong again.

I liked Milner. Not for 20M though.

And Milner is a better player IMO.

Johnson however....

He's still only 16 and built like a twig. Premier league defenders would snap him in two if he was played now.
Raheem probably needs a year of reserve football. The same goes for Sterling.

if only we could combine raheem and sterling. ah well, a man can dream, a man can dream.......

Yes, I know he's not Barnes and he never will be but he could offer something on the left. I wouldn't like to see him start every single game but he could be one of those 25 games a season players.

I'm happy to sign Stewart Downing.

All I've known for the last 20 years of supporting Liverpool is the very odd flash of excitement and success mixed in with 90% mediocrity and seasons of finishing just above the dross, but not good enough to compete with the big boys.

I would ultimately love for this to continue, to never have to experience the aguish of going into the final day/week/month/2nd half of the season with a title to actually chase for, ergo I want Stewart Downing and many more like him to clim aboard the good ship mediocrity and ride us safely along to 6th place.

I picked undecided. I'll wait and see does Mata also come. I think Mata has the guile and class to pick a pass or ran into a pocket of space and hurt teams. I've horrible visions or Downing running into players trying to beat them or that little cut in he does when operating on the left.

The one thing Downing will give us is ammunition for big Andy. A sure fire reason Kenny is so eager to sign him. Carroll will need service and Downing will stand balls up for him. So will Adam for that matter.

Aston Villa
Birmingham
Sunderland
Blackpool
Newcastle

That, ^right there^ is where we're buying our players from this summer if reports and Mark Mc are to be believed.

I'll stop typing now.

United first two signings will be Villa and Blackburn Ryan. Don't lose heart yet.

They already have a squad 5 times better than ours Dave and didn't finish 6th last year.

Downing would improve us, but we can get better for 20 million.

It's a sad state of affairs by the look of it but consider this:

Alonso - Sociedad
Mascherano - West Ham
Johnson - Portsmouth
Reina - Villareal

I mean it's not exactly top notch teams. The team doesn't necessarily dictate how good a player is or does it?

The only player we've bought from a top team in Europe in recent years is Luis Garcia, right?

I know but let's not get bogged down where the players came from. If we signed Hazard and Sanchez you could have added Lille and Udinese to that depressing list you created a few posts back and they'd fit in nicely.

Of course i'd bite my own arm off for a Hazard or Sanchez but it's harder to attract them. I'm just hoping we got good players even though we took them from less glamourous clubs.

And that right there is how much we're paying for them apparently.

80M for that bunch of players.

if your maths is anything to go by then surely matas percentage must be a bit higher 😉

I'd take Downing for 10Mish on the basis that we sign a quality attacking player (Mata)... which isn't going to happen.

So no, I don't want Downing.
