I would have thought you guys would be happy to see a winger arrive in the summer, 'ANY' competent winger. look who we've had on our left wing for pretty much TEN YEARS, with the exception of kewell in his first season downing is better than all of them.
I don't 'actively' want downing but I wont cry into my beer if he is signed either.
Pennantism.

The false economy of buying average when you really need good, or in this case the incredibly expensive version of that.
I always thought pennent was shite with his 'floater' crosses

Downing - "you can't have stars in all positions"
Adam - "you can't have stars in all positions"
Dann - "you can't have stars in all positions"
Enrique - "you can't have stars in all positions"

So no star players this summer then, yeah?
we're not in the CL (or europe for that matter)
we finished six last season
we don't pay the highest wages in the league
we aren't located in the capital
we haven't won anything for 6th years

so what type of signings was everyone expecting? I guess 'better than downing' is the obvious reply, personally speaking we are going for the type of player I knew we would be in for.

Yep and we do need numbers since we are hopefully offloading half of our squad. It would be nice to have a good squad to add 2 or 3 top players but sadly we aren't in a position to do so. I think it's going to take 3 transfer windows to sort us out and get us to where we want to be.

We have been one of the better teams in Europe throughout our history, players know that.
We play in a very good league and have a worldwide fanbase.
We pay quite handsomely enough thanks very much.
Lots of teams haven't won anything for 5 years also.

I take your point that it would be difficult for us to compete for the very best players out there.... obviously true... but that doesn't excuse signing low quality players in order to get back into the champs league, you may argue that that is an exaggeration to call Downing low quality but...

I just find it hard to believe that the best our scouting network can come up with is Stewart Downing, who in my opinion is at the level of club he merits with his ability. I'm praying that FSG don´t try and make us think they are ambitious by flashing silly money on such a humdrum player. And it is Pennantism, totally, except for this time we actually might have the money to buy better.

To me signing Downing can't be justified in relation to the purchasing policy,

young and gifted NO
Star player NO

What is more it makes a lie of the ambition of the owners, yes yes sure we are going to do what we need to do to put us back at the top etc etc.... and we go out and sign the archetypal M'eh average player for a position which we´ve been crying out for a good player in for years.

What the fuck is he?... and we have to haggle down from 20M!! HAAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA..... they should be haggling up from 6M....

It is a bad joke. And 40% of us wont admit it's shit.

You said it yourself Neil, "better than Downing" really is the obvious reply .... because it's obvious.

If we don't get Mata or N'zogbia then Downing will have to do. He is still and improvement on what we have and would be a decent squad player.

I guess my low expectations is born from desparation as we simple cannot go into the new season with our current options on the left so if it means downing and enrique, I'll take it, as far as I'm concerned anything above and beyond that is a bonus.
we had shit options on the left last season and who did we buy in the summer to address this?

we dont need star players, id obviously like them, but we dont need them

think about how we looked near the end of the season, and how we've been playing since kennys been back, and thats without gerrard and an unprepared carroll, the signings that we're making will imrpove the first 11 in a number of positions and deffo improve squad depth. like i said, id like star players but we're gonna get on just fine without them, if we get downing it will be to add premier league experience to the young team we're currently building, an im ok with this

Experience of finishing 8th 9th etc etc...

Ah ... i give up...

I'd really prefer if we tried a kid in there instead and save the money, you never know the kid might turn out to be good and we can subsequently sell him on to a Champs league club who needs a good winger at the top of the table.

I can feel my irascible side is shining through here.

Apologies to all who've read the thread. I hope i didn't insult anyone as that would have been uncalled for.

Can we lock it now mods please and just stick it with the other thread already in place.

we have carroll who is one of the best headers of the ball in the league, and downing who is one of the best crosses of the ball I have seen (I couldn't care less about stats I have my own eyes), that sounds like a devastating combination to me.

A mixture of your team players and one or two attacking players who have plenty of promise a la Suarez.

No one is expecting five or six superstars to be signed, but all this patronising shit about how we don't need more top talent in the side is embarrassing.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions. I'm responding to people suggesting that a collection of Downings is good enough.

I don't hate Downing, I think he's an ok player. But, I hope we don't sign him as (1) we need better than ok & (2) he's going to cost big money.

If we end up in a position where we've spent 75 mil on Carroll, Henderson and Downing I would have to question the sanity of those making these calls.

I was 'expecting' the level of player we are linked with and one marquee signing, which may still happen. who has suggested we don't need more top talent in the side?

Ones that ensure the above don't happen again.

I hope we got this right, im sure we tried other targets but I hope the buy British approach pays off.

In my opinion;
Martinez > Henderson,
Mata > Downing,

Spurs went down the buy young and english road and got Huddlestone and Lennon for peanuts. The risk wasn't there due to their price. We're investing a lot of money into our two. I'll wait and see who else we sign before panicking but i'm worried we'll trash out a big outlay without signig match winners. I'm all for the 'sum of the parts' theory but Henderson, Adam, Downing and Whickham don't inspire confidence that our money was well spent. Still there is plenty of time left in this transfer window.

Sorry if that sounded defeatist. Just now inspired by Downing, Dann, Henderson is all at the mo.

Modric to Spurs for 17M
Aguero to A.Madrid for 15M
Suarez to Liverpool for 22.5M

What do those three transfers have in common?

All were highly rated, young attacking talent with loads of potential and in at least one case very much in demand.

All ended up at teams with questionable squads, no guarantee of regular CL and no winning history in the last five plus years.

So whilst we may be handicapped by our current circumstances somewhat, I don't think the argument of "what do you expect, these are the best players we can get" is a particularly good one.

None of those teams were in CL at the time? You can attract top quality regardless of CL status if you have the money plus Liverpool's reputation as a big club is a factor too as players know we'll be back in it sooner or later.
