{td}Mohamed Salah is scheduled to fly to England today as his ?35 million-plus move to Liverpool from Roma edges closer.
Salah, the Egyptian international, who turned down Liverpool three years ago to sign for Chelsea in a ?12 million transfer, was due to leave Cairo early this morning for London.
He could now undergo a medical tomorrow and finalise a transfer which, dependant on add-ons, would make him the costliest player in Liverpool’s history, outstripping the ?35 million paid for Andy Carroll in 2011. Sources in Italy suggest the final fee could be as much as ?39 million.
Roma’s new sporting director Monchi has forced Liverpool to considerably up their offer since rejecting a ?28 million bid a fortnight ago and has secured a huge profit on a player who only joined the Serie A side permanently a year ago for ?13 million.
Salah came into focus when Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt turned down Liverpool’s overtures and will boost manager J?rgen Klopp’s options in wide areas.
Liverpool lacked pace when Sadio Man? was injured or on Africa Cup of Nations duty and Salah can offer that attribute. He is one of the few players Liverpool have revisited having missed out on signing him in recent seasons.
Klopp is looking to strengthen at left back and in midfield this summer, but is no longer interested in players such as Ben Chilwell, Piotr Zielinski or Mahmoud Dahoud, who were transfer targets less than 12 months ago but proved out of reach.
The arrival of Salah will be Liverpool’s second successful venture into the transfer market after Dominic Solanke, whose move from Chelsea will be subject to a transfer tribunal.
They were** forced to publicly withdraw interest in Virgil van Dijk after Southampton accused Liverpool of tapping up the defender, although that episode is unlikely to have run its course with the transfer window not even officially open.**
Liverpool continue to covet Red Bull Leipzig’s Naby Ke?ta, whose side say he is not for sale, although there is no interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Sources in Germany claim the striker did not enjoy a good relationship with Klopp when they worked together.{/td}
