How are the mets doing Ross?
They sacked their manager a few weeks ago Dave, but they improved a lot since then.

They're back in the playoff race

The latest twist in the A-Rod story:

MIAMI - The wife of Alex Rodriguez wants to know if the New York Yankees star hired private detectives or installed wiretaps installed to spy on her.

Cynthia Rodriguez's lawyers demanded evidence of any such surveillance as part of a routine request filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court last week in their divorce case.

The document asks for any tape recordings, photographs, reports from investigators or results from possible wiretaps "or other electronic surveillance conducted by you or others on your behalf."

Alex Rodriguez's attorney didn't immediately respond Tuesday to an e-mail seeking comment. The 32-year-old third baseman was scheduled to start in the All-Star game on Tuesday night in New York.

Cynthia Rodriguez filed for divorce last week after more than five years of marriage, citing her husband's alleged infidelity. She wants their $12 million waterfront mansion in Coral Gables, a luxury SUV, alimony and financial support for their two young daughters.

Alex Rodriguez has been linked in various tabloid reports to Madonna, though both have denied a romantic relationship. He has also been photographed out at night with a former Las Vegas stripper.

Rodriguez is in the first season of a 10-year, $275 million contract that makes him baseball's highest-paid player.

Some interesting trades:

Ivan Rodriguez to the Yankees for Farnsworth - Posada out for the season.

Teixeira to the Angels for Kotchman + minor leaguers.

And Manny looks like he's itching to get out of Boston.

Manny may go to Florida it seems.

I cannot believe the Angels got Tex - I doubt we can catch them now. I hope he re-signs with us eventually.

Is the Florida one a three way trade ?

Can't think of anyone bar Hanley that would improve the Red Sox (which is funny since they sent him there in the first place)

They surely wouldn't renew his 20m a year deal ?

How are my beloved Mets doing, Ross & co?
Pretty well Dave, top of the division now and the team is starting to hit.

I knew they'd come good.

And to think you were writing them off not so long ago...

Manny to the Dodgers, Bay to the Red Sox and the Pirayes got a number of good prospects.

I think the Bo Sox may have just cost themselves a shot at back to back titles ... No matter how selfish he was, he did a lot of talking with his bat and the hole he's now left in that line up is not replaceable ....

I don't know Wiz, even Varitek came out and acknowledge it was a pain dealing with Manny's tantrums every year and he said it did take it's toll on the dressing room.

I bet the Dodgers wish they had the DH, how many outfielders do they have now ? Pierre, Ethier, Kemp, Jones, Manny.

from espn.com:

LOSERS

• Red Sox

The eviction of Ramirez is a story with so many levels that it's impossible to sum them all up with a one-word label such as "winner" or "loser." We recognize that. There's also a value to subtracting a selfish, disruptive, divisive knucklehead like Manny from an otherwise-harmonious, purposeful clubhouse. We recognize that, too.

And Jason Bay is a heck of a player, one who can stick around and patrol left field in Fenway next year, too. We recognize all of that. Honestly, if the Red Sox went out now and won another World Series, it wouldn't shock us a bit.

But they still find themselves dumped into the Losers column of this opus because this trade marks the end of a special era in the life of their team. They have a different aura now than they had a week ago. And the reaction of folks all over their division to Manny's unceremonious exit -- an exit subsidized with $7 million of those hard-earned Red Sox dollars, we should note -- told us all we needed to know:

It felt like Mardi Gras for the rest of the AL East.

"Don't get me wrong," said an executive of one AL East club. "The Red Sox do a great job. They utilize every advantage they have, and they use all their resources as well as anyone. But sometimes, I don't think even they realized what they had in Manny. When Manny comes up, you feel like you have to pass out ex-lax to your whole team because everybody gets a sick feeling in their stomach -- especially when he had [David] Ortiz there in the middle with him.

"Look, Jason Bay is a great player. But he's not Manny. You're talking about one of the greatest right-handed hitters in the history of the game. I've seen so many situations where you'd think you've got a game, and then all of a sudden that guy came up and everything changed. I've seen what he does to pitchers. I've seen how he changes games. They'll miss that. That's all I can say."

Yep, and I could print you at least one other sports site that claims the Red Sox were big winners in the deal...

Listen, a committed, focused Manny (as committed and focus as that eejit could be, anyway) was as good a pure hitter as there may have ever been in the game.

But the selfish, lethargic, 'I'm-gonna-turn-my-back-on-my-teammates-and-not-give-a-shite' Manny that we've seen in these past few weeks..? Losing him is no loss at all. In fact, it'll probably energise the clubhouse that this cancer that we've been putting up with for soooooo long is now gone, I wouldn't be surprised if we turn our recent, dismal form around, starting tonight.

Manny's 'performance' in the bottom of the 9th, Vs the yankees, with the winning run on 2nd base, when he simply stood and watched three straight fast balls go down the middle, to send a message to Tito and the rest of the Sox management, tells you all that you need to know about him.

So does the fact that his best buddy, David Ortiz hasn't said a word about this. And if Jason Varitek is having a go, you KNOW it was a f#$!ing nightmare dealing with him.

So, all in all, though we may not be quite as potent this morning as we were yesterday, we actually haven't been that potent for several weeks now anyway.

Thanks for everything Manny, but it's time. And I think we'll be better for it.

When Varitek spoke out against Manny that was the turning point for me too, but you are giving up one of the best hitters in the game for a guy with similar numbers but nowhere near the aura surrounding him.

Bay won't make pitchers sweat the way Manny does.

Agreed. No question.

Nor will he make his own teammates sweat it like Manny did.

Listen, I'm really sad that it came to this, becasue a happy Manny batting behind Papi made us feared like no other team over the past 5 seasons - I loved him too.

But his shite has been dragging the team down for ages now, and enough's enough.

I'll miss the Manny who cared.

The bloke who walked out yesterday has cared for months now.

And for us, he was never going to care again.

time will tell dallas ... time will tell ...

but when it comes to the post season (if the sox make it), you'll really be missing a man who a) was clutch in october (far more than Mr. Jeter, who gets all the acclaim for 4 world series and one wonder catch) and b) who absolutely loved facing the skankees ... If anyone from the AL wins it other than the Rangers, I'd rather it's the Bo Sox just b/c it PISSES OFF the yankees so much ...

Angels are definite challengers too.

Agreed, Avy.

But my point is that THAT Manny hasn't been a Red Sock for several weeks now, and wasn't coming back. So from that perspective, it's a deal that we HAD to make.

It has now come out that Theo met with all the veterans on the team (Ortiz, Lowell, 'Tek, Wakefield, even Pedroia) two days before the trade deadline, and asked them what their feelings were, hoping to hear (again) that it was just Manny, and they'd cope with it (again) for the sake of the team.

But to a man, they told him that Manny HAD to go, because it had reached a point were he had made it clear to them that he could not be counted on to give his all for the team. He was destroying the team, they said...

So, f#$! him. THAT Manny is no loss what-so-ever.

I will miss the other Manny though. I loved him.

And by the way, we WILL make October. And the Angels are not challangers...

They're now the team to beat.

points well made D.

I don't think the Angels are the 'team to beat' - The Sox still are, with or without Manny ... But if they can just gel even more, and get Tex going, they will chase you guys & the yankees all the way.

Thank God we traded him to the NL...

JB hasn't looked too bad either, though - And his salary allows us to spend BIG money elsewhere in the coming off-season.

i was thinking that too ... the last thing you want is a motivated manny facing you in the playoffs ... yikes, he's gonna lead them to the playoffs me thinks.

Gents,

If you had to pick a starting team of current players who would you have in it ? (You can have a DH, all the positions, an SP and a closer)
Not necessarily the best players, but players you'd like in your team.

C: Joe Mauer
1B: Albert Pujols
2B: Chase Utley
3B: David Wright
SS: Hanley Ramirez
LF: Manny Ramirez
CF: Josh Hamilton
RF: Alexis Rios
DH: Ryan Braun

SP: Roy Halladay
CL: Mariano Rivera

I got a bit stuck with the outfielders !

So, was there EVER any doubt, that in the last game ever played in yankee stadium between the sox and the empire that NYY would come from behind to win it in the bottom of the ninth..?

C'mon God - We saw that coming the moment they announced the new stadium!

BUT there was definitely not DOUBT that the Yankees would make playoffs, right? Hopefully they don't get the pleasure of signing off Skankees Stadium with a playoff game!

I can't see them catching BOTH us and Cjicago or Minnesota now, mate. Can you?

In previous years, I'd not believe that they're out until it's mathematically impossible(and I'm about to jinx it), but their pitching isn't good enough to make up that kind of ground, is it?

(Not a jinx if it's a question as opposed to a difinitive statement, is it?)
