Missed a Bullet

Carlton Cole
Wilfried Bony
Clint Dempsey
Loic Remy

*edit - I realise I may have misinterpreted the gist of the thread. I in fact didn't want us to sign any of these.

In terms of players I did want us to sign, I now have a funny feeling Damian Duff would have been a bit of a let down for us in the long term.

As I remember from back then - the final conclusion was that he had no end product even though he was always in that final third to cross.

Haha. Not sure what happened. I didn't follow him that close. I guess he had stiff competition on the national side and not sure how he played at Valencia and potential other clubs. I just by coincidence saw a Betis vs Real Madrid game this autumn and asked my mate if he remebered Joaquin that used to play for them. 20 mins later he was suddenly subbed on and helped Betis get a late winner and made the day miserable for Ronaldo. Thats legendary stuff 😀

I was angry at missing out on Kolasinac, but of course I'm quite happy now with Robertson. Still, I don't think it's a case of "missing a bullet," as Kolasinac is surely a lot better than he currently looks for the unbalanced and downtrodden Arsenal team. It's no surprise that he looked excellent in his first few games for them, building on his excellent Schalke form, but looked progressively worse the more he was "coached" by Wenger.

Surprised nobody mentioned Götze. Who knows, we might have not gotten Salah, had he agreed to come here... imagine that!

Keni did mention him above, and got a "like" from me for it. Couldn't agree more about him.

Strangely, I thought it was you Doc. I had confused you with him. Sorry ! Now that you mention him, I notice he doesn't post around these parts anymore.

On the other side of the equation, we need a thread on players you’ve called (with evidence) as successes - for anyone - before anyone else.

Azpilicueta is mine.

He is absolutely top class - excels at RB, RWB, CB. I hate watching a classy player at that bunch of cunts.

Walcott is one for me - whilst I think he was good for Arsenal, he never truly threatened the top level we had hoped for. I was very keen on us signing him for years but i soon realised he was just a bit of a let down.

Yeah, I know a few reds who year on year would advocate us trying to get Walcott. I have to say, I never agreed with that one.

Yeah, as I said, Klopp could potentially have made much more of his attributes. Nevertheless, there is a lot of talk that he likes a back 3 so he can play higher and not do so much tracking back that is necessary in a flat back 4. Remember, Arsenal started the season playing with a back 3, which might explain his early form. Since they reverted to a back 4 he lost form- and regularly has lost his place in their side. Perhaps there is a reason why we didn't seem to vie with Arsenal for his signature?

Lee Bowyer.

I was disappointed that fell through, he was in great form for Leeds at the time.

Obviously he's a dreadful person, but he also seemed to really go downhill following that doomed attempt Houllier made to sign him, with that weird move to West Ham that went wrong, and then Newcastle, where everything always goes wrong, including that scrap with Dyer

I'm sure we were often linked with Kieron Dyer aswell. That would have been a similar disaster.

Has anyone mentioned Carlton Cole.
The dark days of the Hodgson era.
Remember when we were linked with Polsen and Konchelsky as well.
😡

"Newcastle, where everything always goes wrong" hahaha so true.

We've been linked to a load of shite, most have been covered in this thread. I remember Rafa really wanted Marveaux who ended up at Newcastle and was permacrocked and shit. Think he wanted Chamakh too.

We were linked with a succession of journeymen dogshite when Hodgson was here, and managed to sign quite a lot of it too.

Rafa also had a hard on for Kenwyne Jones. Remember that?
Wow. I had forgotten that. That reminds me, as it was at a similar time, but we seemed to really want Royston Drenthe before he moved to Madrid and then journeyed through a succession of clubs including the Blueshite, Reading, and Sheffield Wednesday.

Didn't he get sent off on his debut?
Yeah, I think he was injured at the start of the season (quelle surprise) and then when his long awaited debut came he got sent off and he had to sit out a further 3 games. It was a harsh one as I remember though.

Yeah I remember watching that under 21 tournament he was in and thinking he was boss. Seems his problems were mentally.

Maybe it's a bit to soon still as I really think he's suffered from being misused but Pogba is starting to appear in the periphery of "a missed bullet" for me. Watched him quite a lot with Juve and he was downright amazing, unplayable even, oozing potential and class.

Would've loved we had splashed the cash on him but that might not have turned out like I would've thought after all..
