Alberto Aquilani has revealed he is still struggling to learn English and admits he must improve his language skills in order to make the most of his Liverpool career.
The 25-year-old Italy midfielder arrived from Roma for £20million last summer, but has since struggled to break into the Anfield first team through injuries and poor form.

And Aquilani has now admitted he is struggling both with learning English and the weather. He does insist, however, that he is happy at the Reds and wants to succeed for the club's supporters.

'I don't speak English very well,' he admitted. 'Now I understand more than I did before but I have to improve.

'I am not having regular lessons at the moment. At first I did but it has been difficult more recently and my English teacher is angry about this.

'It has been difficult because at one time my family were here so I couldn't do the lesson, another time we had too many games and sometimes it just feels too much.

'But I like everything in England, I just don't like the weather. I like the people, the supporters, the city and playing here. And I want to play well here.'

Why should he be starting games if he can't be bothered putting the effort in to improve his chances of making here

Hmm... a bit worrying. Sounds like he might well be hankering for a move back home. I know he's hardly set the Prem alight this season, but that Portsmouth performance has given me hope that we've signed a classy player. It'd be a shame if he never actually proved it here.

After reading Torres' shpeal about needing 4-5 quality signings I don't think it matters, nor should it. The FACT is

5 starts, 5 wins, 1 goal, 3 assists. Compare that to TIC* contribution this year.

Those are some of our best (assists and) performances of the year too, including that do or die win against Villa. And yes I know Lucas played in that game but it is clearly Aquilani who balances the side out and helps it tick. Also Gerrard seems to like playing with him a lot.

Not being able to Speak english well isn't the reason why he isn't getting game time.

Carlos Tevez can hardly say a word and yet he plays week in week out when fit.

Reason why Aquilani isn't playing is because Rafa loves Lucas til death.

I actually think he might be a bit of a party boy. Had 2 or 3 'flu's' since he arrived after games most notebly after scoring in front of the kop. Just being sceptical mind. Or a mad fucking conspiracy theorist perhaps.

Interesting, though unfounded theory, it actually makes some sense.

If he was doing that in Liverpool, the taxi drivers would be talking of nothing else, surely?

Ha- this is so true.

I think everyone is making something out of nothing, or a translation, or his remarks in a language he isn't comfortable enough with to have mastered tone.

The "he's not got the flu, he's a partier" is just a promising little bud of a ridiculous internet rumour.

I know you did, I'm saying it's got legs in the internet rumour world. Post it on other sites. Involve Agger somehow and it'll really take off.

From Football365:

NEW ANKLE PROBLEM FOR AQUILANI

Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani has been ruled out of Thursday night's Europa League quarter-final first-leg clash with Benfica.

The Italy international sustained an ankle injury in training on Wednesday morning and will not fly out with the squad to Lisbon.

"He will not be available for this game," said manager Rafael Benitez.

"He had a problem with his ankle and we have to fix it.

"It doesn't seem too serious but it's the same ankle as before and so we'll have to analyse the situation carefully."

Aquilani arrived in the summer after a £17million move from Roma with an ankle injury which had ruled him out of the latter stages of the 2008-09 Serie A season.

It took a while for him to regain match fitness and, as a result, he has made just eight starts and 11 substitute appearances this season.

Benitez also confirmed defender Martin Kelly will undergo a knee operation which will rule him out of action for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old defender tore the meniscus - a similar problem to the one which resulted in striker Fernando Torres having surgery in January which sidelined him for five weeks - in training on Saturday.

i'm pretty sure rafa speaks italian, so it cannot be a failure to understand tactical instructions, and his english has always seemed acceptable to me. It could be covering something else up, because everything about this saga is a bit odd.

Yeah, Tomkins wrote in his 'A Day With Rafa' article that Rafa speaks to Alberto in Italian.
