This is patently not true Brendan, much as your seeming myopia would like it to be so.

Its pretty much a given that the Benayoun deal was in full swing by the time that Roy arrived, but do you truly believe that if he wanted to keep Insua and/or Riera they wouldnt still be with us?

Roy will ahve come in with a list of possible targets, and in turn been handed a list of players for whom interest had been expressed by other clubs - some of those will have been easy decisions, some "wait and sees" and some "fuck lets try and keep them". Roy, seemingly, is working through the got-to-keeps and easy to let goes, and then we'll see what pot he has left.

Purslow it seems is in charge of deciding which players should make the first team squad, who from the reserves is good enough/ isnt good enough to make the step up, player identification and negotiation, sales, ticket prices, stalling the new stadium, tapping up players for Chelsea, and having an input into new owners deals. And all this from a guy who not a couple of weeks ago was getting pilloried for being AWOL on hols. Wow.

“I saw him play in the last three days and I like him both as a player and on a personal level,†Hodgson told Radio Blu in Florence.

“However, talks with Fiorentina started before I got here, so I don’t know how advanced they are.

“I cannot say if Insua will stay at Liverpool or not. I’ll have to discuss that with the club"

"Hodgson won’t get any of the £5.5m received from Benayoun’s switch to Chelsea . That money has been place aside to help pay off ex-boss Rafa Benitez and meet the £2m compensation bill to Fulham to recruit Hodgson"

Yep. A man in control all right

So you've heard of every player in Europe, over 28, who's good?
[/quote]

Good enough for us... Yeah I'd think so.

Zoinks, you must know loads about football. I expect there's a bunch of players in their late 20s who would improve our squad but I've never heard of!

How about over 27? Can you be more specific about the cut-off age? Does the same cut-off age apply to the Latin American leagues as to the European leagues? I expect in the UK you can go a lot lower than 28 right?

Cool. It's going to be great having you around as a resource.

Old Roy and Purslow had nothing to do with enticing Cole to join Liverpool.

Rumours around the town suggest it was a joint effort from the kit man and the tea lady to snare Joe.

Yea, some of the lads on here watch loads of games and I've relied on them a lot over the years. I'm going to be even more 'in the know' now you're here to chip in. I'd been telling people in work that I was hopeful Jovanovic would be a success, at least as a squad player. I'll be more careful now I know that you'd never heard of him.

I hope he will be. Although I saw him more as a replacement in the squad for Riera which is why I made that post. I think Cole could be better than Yossi, Jovanovic could be better than Riera and fingers crossed we may get someone who could be better than Maxi.

You don't think he'll be as good as Riera because if he was then you'd have heard of him, is that right?

Nothing, obviously. It's pointless even trying to debate the toss, because his argument is as selective as always.

I don't get it Bren. Hodgson played down Cole talk two days before he was unveiled.

His comments re Insua were fair, I thought. The club had already decided who was surplus (which happened when Rafa took over too, re Heskey).

So what is he doing then?

Are you suggesting he is pretending to be a doddering old fool who is barely kept in the loop by Pursssssslow and has no real say about transfers and hasn't really influenced who stays (Gerrard, Torres) or goes (Masher, Casper, Insua)?

Brendan's so obviously right about Woy having none of the control we'd like a (different) manager to have that i can't see how he attracts so much flak on the matter, regardless of how abrasively he sometimes expresses the opinion.

why are our board making ANY decisions about the manager's playing staff over his head? there's only one plausible answer: they see him as a cypher, and it's a role he plays with distinction.

I think this is the crux Mark, but leaving the squad with zero available left backs would simply not happen unless Hodgson had agreed with the move to continue. Im not saying he had a huge amount of time to decide, but as I said earlier, there would have been detailed discussions between Roy and the club regarding the players we were looking to get shot of. If Roy strongly disagreed with any of these in the Riera/ Insua bracket then we'd be keeping them.

His comments today regards Torres and Masher gave no mention of Purslow. Maybe he was just getting his feet under the table. He hasn't been afraid to stick his neck out over certain subjects, so he's obviously not that much of a puppet or a yes man.

Well yeah, so maybe he was just being polite regards the lad. It's not beyond the realms, even in the modern game. I'm sure he could have vetoed the deal if he wanted to, though I'm sure the club also had a financial plan in place regards how much they could raise and which players were saleable.

Innit.

A cypher eh? One that attracted Joe Cole. Oh sorry, that was the history of the club and the magic of Purslow, Roy Hodgson being manager, and an obvious failure already was just a side issue.
