Maxi Rodriguez on loan for rest of the season?

I just watched the Youtube compilation for Maxi in the Vids forum and have to say I was reasonably impressed with what I saw. One thing that concerns me though is that the majority of the good play shown in those clips was on the counterattack, a style that we manifestly do not play (or at least not very well). Some of our best play last season was counterattacking with pace and if his signature is an indication that we will try to return to that style then I am encouraged. If not, then I question what value Maxi will add.

Really? I would say we attempt to play counterattacking football right now, it's just difficult when you have a shit, defensive, slow, midfield and only one real speed threat. It's hard to counterattack when we tend to face our own goal.

We do try though.

I am happy with the signing..

He doesnt have a great deal of speed but his Footballing ability and brain creates enough space for him to impact positively on attacks. This is where Babel is shite. He is like a whippet but his movement and touch make it easy for defenders to close him down.
Reira and Maxi on form would make us excellent at holding up the ball higher up the field which would hopefully open up more space for Torres and Gerrard.

Id like to say though that id prefer players with speed and ability.. It seems that we tend to settle for one or the other regularly.

Our attacks break down far too easily, we slow up and allow defenders to get back, we hoof balls over the top instead of actually aiming them at a striker making a run. If you want to call that counterattacking fine but it's a piss-poor attempt. I'm not sure what classification I'd put on our style right now other than "shit". I'm hoping Maxi, if and when he actually signs, can add a dimension we don't currently have and we can look like a coherent team again.

I haven't seen this bloke play since World Cup 2006 but he looked like he could actually play Football then i.e. pass, shoot, control the ball. Since a good portion of our current squad struggle with that, his signing must be a plus point; even if he is down to walking pace these days.

He scored for Atletico at Anfield in November 2008.

Rafa does have a habit of liking players who have played well or scored against us in the past.

He's not the only one is he?

Makes you wonder just how adept all of these "huge scouting networks" at big clubs are.

Rafa: "Who was that tall lad who scored against us last season? Crouch? Let's buy him"

I wish someone had done that when Drogba knocked us out of the Europe at Marseilles.

Isn't Riera back fit now?

As average as he is, he is still our best option on the left I think, unless Maxi is able to do the business there.

In 'light' training in the run up to Spurs so may be a week or so away from the subs bench - then match fitness and form to be regained. Undecided

It shouldn't take him long to get up to speed.

Haha. ;D

Zenden also scored againt us as did Crouch like you said. Pennant had a decent game for Brum against us and there is a good few more examples that escape me now.

Latest just in; Maxi frozen in negotiations

Most managers have.

Chris Kirkland and Wayne Harrison are other examples.

This has always been part of LFC's approach to buying players, from Shanks himself onwards.

Ha, He did have that great against us for Coventry. Think we beat them easy enough anyway but he made several decent saves. He had enough chances anyway to look good.

That was a great game, I think Gerrard scored a header off a corner and Heskey lobbed Kirkland from the edge of the box.

Not sure about Most Expensive Teenage Ever Harrison, but Kirkland made some good saves for Coventry at Anfield. They still lost 4-0, and Emile Heskey scored an outrageous chip

Says it all, really.

Useless, glass-boned, fucking twat

Yup. He's the best goaltender ever to have an average margin of defeat of three.

I believe that a good game against Rangers once was Graeme Souness's justification for signing Istvan Kozma too.

I'm just pleased this transfer policy hasn't always been used. I'm sure I remember Kevin Lisbie, Peter Ndlovu and Micky Quinn all scoring hattricks against us in the past.

Has he signed yet?? I thought getting rid of Ronald McParry was going to speed up the transfer wrangles?

Kirkland, like Rob Green (when at Norwich) and Scott Carson are what I call relegation keepers. They look good cause they have about 20 shots on target on them each game, they are bound to save some. They are excellent shot stoppers but might lack the concentration levels to do well at a big club where they might have to do nothing for the best part of the game then react to make an important save.
