I expect someone to not distort the argument, make completely irrelevant points and then refuse to answer simple questions when it's broken down in a way that doesn't allow the previous tactics.

No-one was ever trying to suggest one player was better than the other. Xavi was brought up to illustrate a point, that's all. And the 27 assists was acknowledged by myself initially, so to continually draw attention to it is ridiculous.

Thanks for your interjection though.

Not sure if it's been posted but surely it can only be a good sign:

Javier Mascherano to face Rapid Vienna for Liverpool FC
Jul 18 2009 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

JAVIER MASCHERANO is set to play his first game for Liverpool since being linked with a move away from Anfield when Rafa Benitez’s side meet Rapid Vienna tomorrow night.

The Argentinian joined up with his team mates at their Swiss training camp on Thursday after enjoying an extended summer break following the birth of his second daughter.

Benitez is keen to get his midfield general back into action at the earliest possible opportunity and also build up Mascherano’s fitness and match practice ahead of Liverpool’s Far East tour so the 25-year-old is likely to be given a run out against the Austrian side.

The pair have spoken about the speculation which has surrounded Mascherano throughout the future but the Reds boss is keen to keep the matter in house for the time being, choosing to concentrate all his energies on Liverpool’s ongoing pre-season preparations.

Benitez will again give playing time to as many members of his squad as possible against Rapid as he continues with his policy of giving Liverpool’s fringe players a chance to stake their claim to be involved with the first team on a more regular basis.

I find it amusing how the same people who have been singing Alonso's praises all season are now undermining his ability and reverting to the kind of rubbish we saw spouted about him this time last season.

He was voted our player of the season this year ahead of captain fantastic, and yet suddenly he's easily replaceable.

Ridiculous.
Is correct.

Oncy - "He gets it, he passes. End of. "

You're better than that really. I can't be bothered re-iterating what others have said, but you're simplyifing Xabi's game to inordinate levels. If it were as simple as getting the ball, passing it, and doing nothing else - then isn't Lucas just as good? Why don't Madrid want Jon-Obi Mikel?

Why were/are players like Molby, Pirlo, Carrick, Deschamps, Xavi, etc etc so highly rated if all they could do is pass and wait for the next opportunity to pass?

I'm not really arsed if you're that interested in what I have to say, or arguing with you, but the better posters on this forum are kinda laughing at you on this one - so you should probably take a step back and have a fresh look.

And resorting to calling me "a cunt" for the umpteenth time isn't helping your cause either.

It's understandable tho.

It's fine to talk about how crucial Xabi is to us,and that it's vital he stays.

I agree with all of that, but it does seem that he's determined to leave.

So what else can we do but accept it and try to get as much money as possible to bring in the best quality replacement we can?

Replacing him will NOT be easy, but we have no choice.

I just wish Xabi could distinguish between Rafa and the club.

Being angry with one doesnt correllate with the other.
So all that said (and you've said it a lot) you STILL cant tell me what he does other than get it-pass it.
Nope thought not.

Im happy to let this go. Because its as boring as watching shit harden. I dont mind that you think theres more to his game than that, or that because Madrid want him there MUST be more to it than that, and i think you are deliberately missunderstanding (representing) my point of view and simplifying further still my already fairly simple point. But thats cool. This is all just a bit silly. Apologies about the 'cunts' i dont mean it personally, its just a term. A term of affection in fact. You know i love you. Cunt.

alonso is easily one of our best players and was our player of the season but he IS replaceable, he just isn't going to be as easy to replace as some people are making out.

I've quiffed most of this thread apart from the beautiful exchange between Oncy and Ross, but is anyone deluded enough to really think Xavi Hernandez is an option as a replacement?

We certainly could do worse than Xavi as Alonso's replacement (IF he's going) but I can't see how on earth we should be able to lure him to Anfield.

Sneijder is probably our best shot. And probably not a bad one either.

I'd evidently play Masher as the holding midfielder and Sneijder as the more attacking-minded one of the two.

It could turn out to be a tad too attacking-minded for Rafa's liking at least away from home against e.g. United. But then we have Lucas.

Anyways in theory it could work I'm sure, hasn't Sneijder played in a rather withdrawn role at Real at times?

Don't know about Madrid, I thought Gago and Diarra held and Sneidjer played in front. But he did play as a central midfielder at Ajax but that was in a 433 so it didn't require the same kind of positional discipline.

But Xabi knows how to play as a holding midfielder I don't think Sneidjer does. The issues we had with SG in that role I can see Sneidjer suffering from too.

If we acquire Sneidjer at Xabis expense, we won't be playing 4-2-3-1 because Sneidjer isn't anything like a holding midfielder.

It's quite obvious.
