Martinez sacked

It's not about money, it's more about distance and time with his family. I'm guessing it's a 6-7 hour drive to and from Newcastle or whatever it takes with the train. That's 6-7 hours he could spend with his family daily.
Yes, he doesn't need to coach Everton, he could coach Tranmere, Bolton, Wigan, Blackburn, Crewe or Blackpool.
But we're talking top tier teams here.

I know it's not about money (although you just referenced crossing Stanley Park for millions of pounds kind of contradicting yourself there) and he wants to keep working to prove himself as a coach, but what I'm saying is he could easily live in Liverpool and not coach.

In relation to Rafa it's not about the money despite my mention, that's more about the rivalry.

To be clear, the game against Everton is a football rivalry. Two clubs with a great history from the same city playing each other is wonderful football spectacle, but I repeat (don't think people will get my point anyway) in a situation where it's supposed to stand in the way of me being closer to my family that would be the least of my worries.

Even if it were about money more than anything else (Rosco will obv claim it is), then Rafa would be mad to go to Everton.

When he stops managing for good he's bit exactly gonna be short of a few bob, but he'll have a very lucrative income from all those after dinner talks & events where ex players & managers sit & tell tales of winning trophies etc.

That potential income would be quite significantly dented were he to go to the bitters.

A large payout when he got sacked by them would arguably cover that, but add in the fact that his wife loves living here & it could sour the entire family's relationship with thousands of fans & there's no way I think he'd consider it worth it.

I'n not sure why he'd want the Everton job bar being close to his family? He has moved to Italy and Spain to take top jobs which proves he is willing to travel for the sake of his career. Everton, without new investment won't be able to back him financially to a level when he can be competitive with the top 4. He would have to cross the divide which would upset both sets of fans. Does he want to put his family through that? Is it worth it?

I can see now why he took that interim Chelsea job but I cannot see why he'd want the Everton job on a full time basis.

He took the Newcastle job for fuck's sake. I think it's fair to say that he was quite keen on getting back into management.

I'm sure he would consider the Everton job if it was offered, but as you say, there's the obvious FACTUAL rivalry issue to factor into any decision.

Eh? Why should he do that? He loves being a manager. I'm sure he's as aware as any Liverpool fan who lives in the city about the rivalry, and it would certainly be a huge factor in any decision he made, but his family live there, there's a vacancy, and he's a good manager.

Yeah, Everton wouldn't be his first choice, but his first choice already have Klopp, and as I pointed out, he actually took the Newcastle job.

.

I'm sure he was keen to get back into management and the Newcastle job wasn't a mad move by him at all. You wrote that as if I had been disagreeing with you.

I presume his train of thought was that he'd be the hero if he kept Newcastle up. If they go down, he can walk away.

Any speculation about Benitez's likelihood to be interested in the manager's job at Everton should be informed by the fact that he signed a three year deal to be manager of Newcastle two months ago.

Don Hutchison a former LFC youth/senior player also played for both if I remember it correctly.

He's a strange one to cite. He was a trainee and first team player for his local club Hartlepool, had absolutely no allegiance to LFC before he signed, never really acquired one after he signed, and therefore felt no qualms about later signing for Everton.

My bad, though he was a youth player at LFC.

I never said he shouldn't work. Modo was making the point that the Everton job would get him closer to his family. I was simply saying he doesn't need the Everton job to get him closer.

And also played for two other clubs inbetween. Which does make soften the blow a bit.

I think the most contentious in recent years - ie one of the very few times one of the better players at Everton managed to force through a move to Liverpool - was Nicky Barmby, who was one of the first to make that move for decades. I think players have moved from Liverpool to Everton more readily because they don't often have players we want, and even then don't want to sell them to us, and we've always been in the ascendancy, so it's not really felt as much like a big deal if we let an unwanted player go there, because we signed someone "better". (cf Beardsley to Everton when we signed Saunders....that went well), or the youth players we let go (Sheedy).

The best player we ever got via Everton was Steve McMahon, and he had to move to Villa first.

How many other jobs are nearby that are vacant? Newcastle in the Championship or Everton? Hmmm.

"Would he be interested in what could be seen to be a backwards step?"

What could be seen to be? Fucking really?!

Hahaha. I think it's boss, wind the deluded cunts up & then laugh when they get whoever they end up with.

Once, years ago when we were looking for a new manager and Mourinho was questioned about whether he'd be up for it, he said (politely, in fairness to him) "I will never manage Liverpool, but I can't tell you why". Everything's now clear - he's obviously been hankering after the Everton job all along. 😕

It's cos he's wanted us & then when we didn't want him he got pissed off, & it seems has been enamoured with the idea of managing Utd.

FWIW, which may not be much, Balague said on TalkSnot a few minutes ago that he thinks the chances are Rafa will remain at the Toon. He reckons Rafa's OK with what he's been offered in terms of control but wants it in writing, and will stay if he gets that, which Balague thinks he will.

Now this is far more sensible from The Echo about changing the management structure and possibly having a sporting director.

It makes perfect sense for the likes of Koeman, Pellegrini and De Boer. Well, until you remember their last two managers came from Wigan and Preston.

Yeah, but Koeman has done it with Southampton, so his next move being Everton would seem a bit....sideways

Indeed, despite that paragon of cool and reasoned objectivity Joey Barton poo-pooing the idea on TalkSh!te this morning.

Talksport stirred the Rafa thing the other day.

Cue the usual "I wouldn't have a red manage my team" callers.

What? Not even if he made your team better? I know it's not all of them, but the more vocal ones just seem to spew vitriol.

I've said before, you can't hate them. They're the younger sibling who wants to play football with you but is just to small and weak so he tries to kick you. And doesn't get that right.

Patronising pat on head for younger sibling.

It's the taking part that counts - said nearly all losers.

was always on the cards, he literally turned everton into wigan this season.

I personally hope de boer goes there, would be good for the league.

just like I hope lacazette goes to arsenal, musa goes to leicester, batshuayi goes to spurs and icardi goes to west ham.
