He was brilliant last night.

Great at the back, got forward with aplomb without leaving himself exposed, handled himself with real composure, & most importantly for me, looked every inch like he was a born first team player.

I was very surprised not to see him have his own thread here already. Surely I'm not the only one impressed with this lad?

I havent been able to watch much of the ressies, can someone tell me what positions this lad has played & is comfortable in? The offal tells me he's a central defender.

What do you think, should he be given a go in the league games?

As a side note, the offal gave Spearing MotM. Madness.

So he does impress at CB too? Good news, cos Wilson has been given some plaudits & sounds like the real deal too.

At 6.3" Kelly would give us some much need aerial presence at the back. I have always said that CB's are a liability when played too young, no matter how talented, as that position is as much intelligence & experience as it is anything else, so starting him too early would be a mistake, we'd also have to blood both Wilson & Kelly alongside experience, which could be difficult, as rotating your CB's can be a sure way to destabilising your team.

If memory serves he got his chance in the reserves at RB as well, but he is actually a CB and in the last year or so, I think it's been there that he's played regularly for the reserves.

As you say, he looks a born first teamer - even from the word go at reserve level. He's composed, looks to make the correct decisions, pretty decent on the deck and has actually got a bit of pace to go with the height and strength.

All in all, we should be pretty happy that someone decent is finally coming through the reserves. If he only turns out to be a useful as O'Shea has been to Utd we'll have done well, but this Kelly will hopefully turn out to be better.

Watching him last night I thought that there were great similarities between him and Carragher when it came to his defending but clearly he doesn't get a nose bleed crossing the half way line. 😀

A super prospect indeed.

Cracking defender - did all of the simple things perfectly last night; take note glenjo

I didn't see the game last night but I'm a huge fan anyway. I reckon he'll be Carra's long time replacement and will captain us one day. Bold prediction, but there you go.

Yup, he looks ready to me too. He thinks well and has a good turn of pace about him.
He could well be the sorcerers apprentice.

regards

Kelly should no longer be treated as a "fringe" player. He is well worthy of a first-team place. I agree that it's great when we get a fantastic player through the youth setup, instead of having to pay €000,000,000's for their signature.

I think there's a pretty good argument for playing Kelly at RB ahead of Magic right now, actually. Certainly against the better teams, as he's inarguably more solid defensively.

I can imagine his career being a bit Carra-esque: a few seasons as a versatile full-back, then perhaps becoming a centre-back in his mid-20s. He's got more obvious skill than Carra had at that age though.

I think we have further evidence that Johnson on the RW ahead of Kelly at RB could be well worth trying. I'd be very happy to see that on Sunday.

I don't agree at all. In a team that is short on creativity, it would be folly to drop one of the creative players that we do have. We are not that strong that we can cast aside England's first choice at right back.

Ha. I might need to bump my thread again. However, perhaps Sunday isn't the best time to test drive a new system.

I would be confident with Kelly playing either full back position if needed.

I thought Spearing was terrific and Kelly was good. He got up and down well and defender well - however... looked like Carra going forward, lost and out of ideas.

KELLY FOR RB AGAINST UTD.

(And Glojo further up)

Nope.

You dont blood a defender against Utd. Not a chance.

Fuck me, Giggs would tear right through that inexperience, despite the lads obvious talent.

Also, I less than convinced with the whole playing Glenjo as a RW argument.

I cant remember a FB succesfully making it as a winger.

I think he'd look more solid than Glen has recently, plus with Glen further up, he's got extra cover.

gareth bale? i think it's worth a go personally, because johnson's not just threatening as an overlapping pace merchant like a lot of attacking right backs, but he's got real skill on the ball as well and can beat a man from a standing start.

Didn't Rob Jones make his debut against United.

I agree thought Sunday isn't the time for Kelly to start RB just busting your ball with Rob Jones.

But then again he *is* a properly attacking FB. He has all the attributes to play right midfield successfully, given he finds himself in that position regularly anyway.

EDIT: And it is an undoubted fact that he is more convincing in the RM part of the pitch than the defensive part.

I don't expect Kelly will start against United, but if he did, I would have absolute confidence in him to deal with Giggs, or indeed anyone else in the United squad.

And that's how I see it as well.

Kelly is a wonderful prospect and it was evident already last Season that we've got a real player on our hands here but let's not get ahead of ourselves. There's no way he should bench Johnson at this day and age. For several good reasons pointed out by Portly in the above. His time will come soon enough.

PS Am I the only one who thought he was partly to blame for their goal last? He certainly didn't keep track with his nearest opponent.

I thought it was a combination of things, I didn't notice Kelly's involvement really. Spearing fell, the Greek struggled to keep up and Pepe didn't read the situation quick enough and was slow coming off his line.

I'm not for Johnson to play RW but that's the best argument I've seen yet for him to play right wing.

I thought Reina was out very quick, he just finished it well.

I don't think Spearings fall made any impact other than perhaps to open the attackers eye up to the pass that was on regardless.

The positioning of Kelly and Zorba can be called into question, but if Zorba wasn't so painfully slow he might have been able to put a challenge in.
