Martin Kelly

Kelly looks very comfortable in the RB slot. If he and Johnson were presented to someone who had no prior knowledge of each, I'm pretty sure they'd pick Kelly for defensive duties.

I don't think Johnson has the discipline for RB he looks more and more like an RM.

KELLY FOR RB AGAINST UTD.

(And Glojo further up)
Nope.

You dont blood a defender against Utd. Not a chance.

Fuck me, Giggs would tear right through that inexperience, despite the lads obvious talent.
He made his competitive debut in the Champions League and performed very well indeed, which suggest Kelly wouldn't be a rabbit in the headlights if selected against Old Trafford.

Anyway, I can't see it happening.

I doubt it, giggs hasnt had any pace for about 7 or 8 years now, the most impressive thhing about him for the last few years has been his publicist, most of his good work now is done centrally picking passes, if giggs starts on the left on sunday then we should be relieved because he absolutely should not be able to go passed either Johnson or Kelly

For the record Im not advocating that Johnson play RM Im just saying that Giggs hasnt ripped a full back to pieces for the best part of a decade its not something to fear

Undoubtedly if given time and space that he can deliver well but considering both our full back optiojns are a few yards faster than him just sticking to him and denying him the oppurtunity to make that delivery wont be difficult, its not as he will drop deep like Ronaldo and then lose his marker to pick up the ball and drive forward with ferocius pace. The only way he can be a threat from a wide position is if his marker is slack positionaly

I'd drop johnson right now. Poor form and a liability
I don't agree at all. In a team that is short on creativity, it would be folly to drop one of the creative players that we do have. We are not that strong that we can cast aside England's first choice at right back.
And that's how I see it as well.

Kelly is a wonderful prospect and it was evident already last Season that we've got a real player on our hands here but let's not get ahead of ourselves. There's no way he should bench Johnson at this day and age. For several good reasons pointed out by Portly in the above. His time will come soon enough.

PS Am I the only one who thought he was partly to blame for their goal last? He certainly didn't keep track with his nearest opponent.
Portly= whilst i understand dropping johnson is a risk, in my eyes based on current form he's easiy droppable. He may be a creative player but recently his runs into opposition half are poorly thought out and has started doing lucas backwards passing. His crossing ability is in serious question too. This could all be confidence and dropping him could shatter it completely, but it could also point out to him that he isn't the only right back we have and he needs to improve

KHL= I think kelly is still young and its a massive risk, but he's certainly worth a chance against a team who relies heavily on attacking from the flanks. If nani plays left wing on sunday we will concede through him as he will tear johnson apart. I am no advocating starting him every week, but by the same token, i think if a player is out of form, why should he be continued with until he can prove himself?

I think he is great and will play centre back for us for a long time.

The lad has a great future ahead of him. He just needs to put his head down and continue working hard.

I agree.

Dare I say it? He looks like Carragher's replacement in the making. Very impressed with him indeed. After the CL debut I expected to see a lot more of him, but it hasn't happened as yet. I think he got injured? Either way, I hope Roy rates him highly, because I'd like to see him at RB with Johnson experimented with on the right of midfield.

Wash yer mouth.

Nothing can stop Sir Ryan, PFA player of the year 2009.

He's flawless.

Thankfully Nani didn't play on the left or it could have bee more. The times giggs got past Johnson were easy to recover from due the glacier pace or saint giggs, but johnson still remains a liability and want him dropped

There was one moment in the first half where United counter-attacked down our left side. No RB was there. Nobody was there. And then Johnson appears, jogging across from the forward-left position after Carra has dealt with the situation.

I just sat open-mouthed as he jogged across the diagonal of the screen.

Where the fuck was he? And what was he doing coming from there?

I haven't really bought into the Johnson is a shit defender theory up to now but today, I though he was poor when asked to defend.
Worrying

Roy seems to like his full backs to defend more than risk going forward. clearly then johnson needs to be dropped. With a defensive mid as immobile as poulson we need our full backs to defend more than attack. This them would allow gerrard/mereiles to burst forward more. Problem them arises from our complete lack of width

I hadn't really brought into the play Johnson in front of Kelly plan.
Maxi has let me down in the United game, lets try it

regards

i'd play the lad. now that masch and alonso have both gone i'd change our formation as well

reina
kelly carra agger konchelsky
johnson gerrard raul jova
cole
torres

i'd even be tempted to play the greek or anyone that can head the ball at the back.

much better formation with the players that are fit and available now

I really think johnsons crossing is overrated, and his ability to make a clever off the ball run. I'd be willing to see it attempted, but I can't see it being a success

That's probably sort of what I said when they decided to turn Ray Kennedy from Centre Forward into a left mid

regards

well I hope I'm wrong but I just can't see it being a success. Surely at 25 our whatever SOMEONE would have thought of it and tried it.

Johnson seems to have lost some pace. Whether that's through effort or something physical I'm not sure. Hopefully he sorts it soon.

i saw johnson have a decent game at right midfield, think he even scored before he moved to us.

can't be any worse than maxi and if you can't try it at home against sunderland then it'll never be tried under roy

I have thought that this year, I wonder if it stems from his knee injury.

Windy Jnr, I am not a great advocate of the idea, but if it is an opportunity to get Kelly in and give him a run, and perhaps give our right side an alternative, why not

regards

Due to the fact we have no other options then it can't hurt can it? I just don't expect much

It might in turn give us a bit more solidity because Johnson's positioning is constantly unbalancing and stretching the back line. It's worth a try at least.
