1. Is better than Daniel Ayala

2. I wanted him to play CB rather than RB, but he did well (after a nervous start)

3. Wear some black boots and you'll make it.

He did quite well, yes. Comfortbale on the ball, positionally good, strong, relatively quick, and didn't make too many errors. Shunted it back where it came from a touch too many times for my liking, but I suspect he was too scared to take the game on and fuck up, which is to be expected.

He's unlikely to start at centre-back for quite some time though.

Because being in the middle carries more pressure and responsibility.

I said last season that his versatility might get him more of a chance and to be honest, I think he would be better off at RB to start with.

Why? because we are so strong and deep in that position. We never give up any goals.
[/quote]

Because we have three better and more experienced players to play there.

That reason enough?

Hes not up to Evans standard for example.

I think the acadamy has been a massive failure, they should not of built it in Kirby away from the 1st team, how can you learn when you cant see the standards you should be aiming for?

I know a kid watching Torres train every day is going to pick up more if he is canny lad.

They should sell it and turn it into a school or gym.

How on Earth do you know that?

He's played 70 minutes of 1st team football.

I only saw up to 60 minutes - had to leave for work - but from what I saw he gave a classy debut against some extremely good players.

Right now I think he's got a big future at our club.

Lets fuck Degen off.

Well, your right I suppose Ryan, im just going off general expectations and the ressie reports by Usher in TLW.

But really just the general expectations of the kids coming through, eg Evans is expected to play for England but our boys never seemed top be tipped for greatness anymore?

Nah, not really. But I think we should look to reach a settlement for his contract for Degen and invest our time in Kelly.

He won't get the chances Insua has had, mainly because he's up against a decent fullback for competition, but he deserves to be shown a similar level of faith.

Jonny Evans has 20 caps for Northern Ireland.

Big whopping fail.

Oops.

I wondered why the bookie was so eager to take my 'evans will captain england one day mark my words!...

But, embarassing mis facts aside! do you think the expectations dont seem the same for our boys from the acadamy than the manc boys that come through?

If we can get this lad to play to potential and nail down a first team position, that will be a huge positive to come out of this adversity.

Rafa should work with him closely. Ayala is not too shabby either. Is Johnson able to play leftback, as well as he does on the right? He seems to be quite capable on his left leg too....

It has to be a straight fight between Insua and Kelly for a full-back slot in the team. That is if Johnson is able to play on the left when Kelly replaces Insua. It will help defend the set pieces too...wouldn't it?

I think he was better than you're implying actually. He was solid defensively, but he also hit the two best crosses of the night - one with each foot.

I'm not gonna go overboard because we've seen young RBs make ace starts and go on to be sold for peanuts six months later (Jon Otsemobor, Stephen Wright), but it was certainly a more promising debut than Jay Spearing's the other day.

I thougt he was MoM.

For me Pepe just pipped him. Two defenders were our bewst players. Says it all really

How should we 'fuck Degen off'? Do you honestly think anybody is taking him off us at £ 40k per week?

God, I still can't believe we signed this muppet.

Can't believe I'm quoting myself, but there ya go.

Well done Kelly.

Many reserve players taking the huge step up to the first team flounder despite having looked a cut above reserve level. Every once in a while one of them thrives playing amongst better players and looks like he "belongs" instantly.

Kelly's one of the latter.

He's also expected to be fit for sunday should Johnson not make it.

Mad as it seems, i'd rather see Kelly than Carra at right back on sunday if Johnson's not fit.

He was the one good thing from last night. He was ok going forward, nice the way he beat the man and whipped in a good cross that aurelio should have scored from.

Johnson is going to stall his progress though. He got a break tonight and took it, fair play to him.

*Wonders can Kelly play LB too*

Best debut in a first team match by a reserve since Damien Plessis against Arsenal a couple of seasons ago.

For the first time in about two decades, we actually have a promising youth and reserve set-up (as opposed to just the odd good young player). How Evans, who practically lived in the reserves from his mid-20s onwards, could ignore the set up there as a manager is a mystery, and likewise Houllier - the supposed great patron of youth football - with the academy, but they've both, finally, been revived. By the time they bear much fruit the plaudits won't count for much, but it's a creditable long-term initiative. Of the current reserves Kelly, like Darby and Ayala, has the right disposition for first team football, but also more ability, and I hope he'll end up as a regular in the centre of the defence. He performed extremely well last night.

Good post Macca.. I still disagree about Darby though, I just don't see anything in the lad. I hope I'm wrong though.
