Markovic

Lamella was dross yesterday.

Markovic has just looked out of depth and uneasy both on and off the ball so far, that's the sort of shit a player with strong character and determination can drag themselves away from, it'll be interesting to see how he develops.

How's our multimillion pound youngling on loan in spain getting on , Luis Alberto ?

Back on Markovic - can anyone confirm if he actually played much in our pre-season? I know he played a half against Olympiacos, but I also know he was injured for a while before the season started. He wasn't named in the squad for the season opener against Southampton. Did he miss all the games between that Olympiacos friendly in the US and his first competitive game (away at City)?

He played the first half of one preseason friendly and got injured didn't he?

That's what I thought, but wasn't sure.

I missed the part in your post where you explicitly said exactly what I did, apologies about that! But yes, I think that's all the pre season he did, I don't think he even played anything back at Benfica.

Who was the last player to cost a fortune, stank from the start and come good eventually? Be it playing for liverpool or another team?

With Henderson and Sterling you could see potential in their plays. With Downing and Carroll you could see they are out of their depths. Markovic , to me falls into the 2nd category unfortunately.

I thought Henderson looked like a hopeless case too

I got a completely different impression of his mentality based on tidbits I read in the summer. Felt like people were saying that the only thing holding him back from world domination is willingness to apply himself (or am I attributing that solely to the comment from Matic?)... I just assumed he'd be an arrogant sort. Maybe he is and just doesn't fancy applying himself in a struggling team or in a situation where he knows he can't do his thing.

Maybe he's just young and will take time.

I kinda feel like we need him to become a star in the long run.
I think you're putting too much emphasis on Matic's comments. Most Benfica supporters thought those comments were quite rich coming from Matic as well.

Drogba was wank in his first season

He wasn't wank, he showed some signs of being really useful and scored some goals. It was clear to me almost immediately that we had the wrong Frenchman in Cisse.

What he did do is want the ball.

My mate & I were comparing Lamela & Markovic yesterday, there's a lot to be learned.

Tbf we already knew the unofficial rule that foreign players can often take a season to adjust, but we've seen a lot of players defying that so maybe it serves as a reminder.

You can sing a song for Lamela to the tune of Mahna Mahna from the Muppets but you can't do that well with Markovic. I need to make better comparisons than this though.

Yeah. When I look back, Drogba still played a key role despite not quite hitting the personal highs that were expected of him.

As for others, Evra and Vidic always come to mind. They both a poor start.

Drogba wasn't that bad as pointed out by a few; Bale was playing at left back when he started at Spurs before being moved up the wings.

16 goals, and won the league title.

I wouldn't mind that sort of wank right now.

Yep, I think people looked at him and the work-hard side of his game and assumed he was a bit of a yard dog, he had a good start and got better and better.

If the end result was a league title...... I'd probably give you that wank*

Some of the comparisons in here are spectacularly bad.

FWIW, there has been a few moments in his game that his impressed me. He has good awareness in tight areas, which bodes well to fitting in with out side in the long run, but he needs to be more expressive with the ball, more accurate with his all round play, and grow a set of balls and start to influence matches. For £20M I was expecting someone who can come in and contribute now, and with that in mind it's hard not to think we've been short-changed.

Henderson always looked likely to come good to me because his attitude and workrate were second to none. I've yet to see that in Markovic performances. Nobody should be writing him off, but it's clear that he's got a very, very long way to go.

He's only 20, been here about 3 months and has really not had that much playing time. I'm going to give him a bit more time before writing him off.

One thing that I have noticed about him so far though, is that whilst he does seem to have the ability to get into good attacking positions he is often let down by a poor first touch.
