Manchester United v Liverpool Match Thread

It does once again ask some of those big questions we've all been discussing for ages;

The first-choice midfield can look horribly pedestrian at times.
We should not have to start a player like Divock Origi when Salah (or anyone gets injured)
We need alternative striking options to Firmino
Joel Matip is always only two poor games away from losing his place to Gomez
We can look a better team when Henderson isn't playing
Why did we spend 90m Chamberlain and Keita?
What has Shaqiri done wrong?

Keita was instrumental when he came in and I the fucker. If he stays fit and plays like that every week for 90 mins he’ll be a huge asset.

He won’t though 🙁

I did and I didn't.

It was a foul in the sense that he got kicked, and the ref could've blown up.

But he wasn't really in control of the ball, and VAR was never going to overturn it when they looked at it. Wasn't a refereeing howler.
It is a refereeing howler in its own right. But that is all totally irrelevant when the referee gives 12 decisions for the same or less contact in the rest of the half and then randomly doesn’t give that one. When it then goes to VAR the ONLY question can be “is a foul committed, yes or no?” And the answer to that can only be “yes”

We gave them too much respect. Other than them putting in more effort than usual, which is expected, the game was for the taking. We missed Salah and Shaq.

This was exactly the type of game for them to run behind Utd's 2 banks of fours, during the latter stages of the game.

Oh well....1-1 is a decent result and we are still top of the table.

Long way to go in the season. Moving on.

I agree with this, he hardly touched him - it was Mane-like.

We've been in touch with the PGMOL after Marcus Rashford's opening goal was allowed to stand.
Firstly, the on-field referee didn’t think it was a foul and VAR checked/decided that it wasn’t a clear and obvious error to not award the foul.
Secondly, VAR isn’t re-refereeing matches, there is contact but VAR was comfortable it wasn’t enough to disallow the goal.
If it was in the penalty area I can’t see anything but a foul.

Fair result. We were awful first half, fair first part of second half and good in last 20.

Won 8 drawn 1

The team that won the European Cup and had 97 points last season reduced to long balls for most of the game. We looked much better once Keita and Ox came on. The question is why not Keita and Ox much earlier? I love Gini and Henderson but sometimes your can tell really in in the game that they aren't going to contribute creatively.

Fucking hell, anyone would think Keita and Chamberlain came on and won us a point. Lallana did that.

Keita was OK, but I fail to understand the praise. He made a few passes, but what else did he do? He is still so hesitant, he makes a move to go forward but then checks and looks for a short ball. Never looks like he's going to cause real damage. Or shoot even.

As for Chamberlain, he's just fucking brainless, and his touch is awful. He had one decent shot and that was about it

What do you guys think about the Fred shoulder, he used his shoulder as a tool so technically it is handball, or am I wrong...

maybe they looked better in the context of one of our worst displays for ages, because almost everyone else was fucking shit, apart from Wijnaldum who was only fucking shit for half the game.

Matip, Henderson, Firmino, Origi were all fucking dreadful, and TAA couldn't hit a bull's arse with a laser-guided shovel

Gotta take a draw at Old Trafford to be honest, especially after being shit for large parts.

We missed Salah running in behind massively but also they set up to defend and grind out a result at home so it's not that surprising.

We need more options on the bench though for sure

Was listening to Peter Crouch podcast yesterday and he was going on about the live of first touch that Gerrard demanded of him, which made him raise his game. Saw Zlatan saying he used to bet Lukaku on his first touch. If Origi kills that ball into him, we don't concede that goal.

Can see why the foul wasn't given, but we desperately need another attacker who can come in for Mane or Salah, not as an impact player after 70 mins.

Firmino was anonymous and Henderson awful. Mistake we made was letting them dictate the tempo early on and we just regressed.

On the plus side I got to watch James bounce off a brick wall.

Otherwise it's all been said, because we know all we need to know about this team for good and bad, and some of that just can't change.

Keita didn't do wonders in his 10-15 mins. But he helped the whole team control the ball better with him and Lallana on. We struggled with that for long periods.

That "wasn't enough" bit is worrying from the PGMOL, because it's utter tripe. If it was an accident, it wasn't a foul - if it was deliberate (and it was), it was a foul and the referee should have awarded a freekick to us. The rules say bugger all about "enough".

The real problem here was that Atkinson is a sh!thouse who has always chickened out of giving potentially controversial decisions against home sides.

I think we have to be honest about something here - against real quality, I really don't think Henderson is right for this team, the number of pass-backs just really slows down the entire game and build up play and takes away any unpredictable issues from our game which leaves the opposition comfortable. His limitations in today's game and many others are so obvious - as soon as someone is in front of him, he just cannot make a single forward pass. It completely limits our midfield when the wings are not working and when Firmino cannot get into the game. Before anyone wants to make the point about him retaining the ball - can I just say fuck off - I am not interested - as this is what always happens against good quality opposition.

Also I cannot see any reason to blame Origi, we are not going to have a world class goal-scorer on our bench that will happily sit on the bench for 90% of games - never going to happen, and I thought he did quite well in the first half and Gini showed some moments - which were really cool, but second half that first phase he was a non-entity.

But I rarely ever say this - that ref completely utterly was a Manc - all the way, to the point where we can say he was a member of their team. He gave everything to them - EVERYTHING.

We should have played there entire game like we did the last 20mins ffs.
I think it's difficult today to single out anyone having a good game minus vvd which is a given. Maybe robbo.
Trents crossing was bollocks, entire midfield was shit, Origi just is shit, bobby had one of his regular non-goal-threat days, Mane just wasn't at the races and was not in his favourite position.
Klopp seems to be overlooking the weakness with cover upfront like successive managers refused to acknowledge we needed a DM. I understand that the right players don't want to come and sit on the bench, I get that, but we need players on the bench that can come on and change games. I know lallana scored, but he's come off the bench a million times and done fuck all, same for the ox. And Shaq has obviously banged klopp's mrs. I don't expect any action in the jan window, but he's just got to get a couple in next summer, the front 3 are going to be fucked by Jan.

Unusual sloppy on the ball. We really struggled to find a rythm and control the game. But we where still the team with the better chances and should have wrestled 3 points out of this game.

Keita is a metronome type player and our team clicking into his rhythm is how we scored. He created the space for Robinson and fed him. He was very good.
