Manchester City v Liverpool Match Thread

The big picture is sweet (4 points clear) but the ‘now’ is sad because we sat back and let that happen. We lacked intensity for too many long spells. When we attacked them, we caused problems and had chances but we didn’t do it enough.

The fine margins hurt. Mane - post and out. Sane - post and in.

Hopefully the timing of some cup games is also good in the sense that City now have FA Cup and League Cup semis getting in the way of building momentum.

Overall, i am worried that 4 points isn’t enough of a lead against a team with KDB returning back to the squad, but i hope I’m wrong.

The next league game is away to a very good Brighton side. We’ll have to be well up for that.

Yes. They are tough side to beat away from home. Which is why it will be a good game to win.

Strangely. I have a lot more confidence in this Liverpool side than that of past seasons. We are actually a good side now. We are not just "winging it" and scraping past teams with the likes of Mignolet, Kolo Toure, Glen Johnsen, Martin Skrtel, Jon Flannagan keeping the back door shut. People forget that when they talk about the last time we "blew it".

It's mental that you'd start with Henderson when Fabinho, Keita and Shaqiri are on the bench. We paid about 120 million for them in the summer, they're all great players, and we're still playing a very average player who delivers nothing in their place.

It's great that we've played them twice and we're still four points clear, all of us would have jumped at that at any point in the season until a couple of weeks ago, but when we twatted them three times last season Henderson didn't play in any match. Ox played the attacking role. When we were lucky to draw with them this season Henderson started. So why again tonight? I don't get it at all.

And fuck Lovren.

Yup. Which is his job. Plus he got a great assist.
TAA was so unimpressive with his defending and most of his passes today (apart from the one to Robertson of course). I really like him and he can be sublime at times, but he infuriated me today.

I thought Trent was great, actually – one of the few players who made the forward-thinking passes that the midfield was failing to make. He picked out Robertson with a sublime pass, which created Firmino's goal and there were several times when he felt the game needed someone to run forward from midfield and he just went and did it himself, one one occasion he even stayed in midfield for a long time (forcing Hendo to cover at RB), but another player stupidly lost the ball wasting the whole effort. He had a couple of strange turn-overs on defensive end, but overall I thought he came out of this game with credit.

The Truth. The End.

We KNOW those three are not good enough, that's why Klopp went out and bought Keita and Fabinho ... then doesn't play them. It's on him.
I don't think they are not good enough. I think they should not play together.
Fabinho should have started, but Keita has not (yet?) reached the level we need.

Meh. Why change a team that put 5 past Arsenal ?

However, I do not think this is a big deal. Close game, we had chances, could have gone either way.

We are still top of the league, lads. By 4 points. Deservedly too. 🙂

Yeah I'd agree with that. He was overrun by Sane+Aguero+Silva 1 and Silva 2 though. Not blaming him for that he did his job, the midfield didn't.

Our title chances will depend largely on Klopps midfield selection from now on.
He's been spot on for most of the season, but chose the wrong mix today.
A jittery Henderson, Milner after being out injured and away day Wijnaldum.

Soz yeah, I meant together, Gini should be our only starter from those three next season. Gini & Fabs +1 (Probably Keita if he can get into his BL form).

Wrong, Hendo started and played 90 minutes the home game in the CL when we beat them 3:0.

Ok, fucked up there... But we still started an attacking midfielder. I don't get why we chose not to twice this season when it worked so well last.

No AM when they five nilled us last season. It's almost like there's a pattern

Fernandinho's contribution tonight
72 touches
55 passes
10 duels, won 7
4 tackles
3 clearances
9 x possession gained

Actually, considering we’re still top with 4 points clear, it’s probably the one time we didn’t need to win.

Just feels like, when the chips are down and we need to win, we can't find that final quality to win.

Of course I hope we can go on to win it. But.. we could have been 10 points clear.

We will see.

I don't really worry about this team, but as for the fans, jesus christ, the snowflake element is fast approaching a fecking avalanche. It's like one loss of three points and it's a disaster. That's pretty much par for the course in a grown-up world. We don't play this team again. We've not lost to anyone else. At this stage you generally win titles just holding your composure, grinding out the results no matter what and using your squad cleverly. Some one here will be listening to TalkSport and crying tomorrow. For god's sake get a grip!

I'd agree with that. It's just Klopp doesn't trust Keita nearly to the extent he trusted Ox and Shaq can't play in a midfield 3 – which we definitely needed to weather the initial storm. But again – I agree with you; once we weathered the initial period of pressure (I thought Hendo, Gini and Milner performed very well in that phase) our downfall was not being able to hit them right back like we did last season. The midfielders bottled a forward pass time and time again, the front 3 starved without service and City were able to regroup and prepare for 2nd wave of the attack, which brought them the opening goal.

Chips are down? We were top of the league with 7 points clear of Spurs before KO today. We’re still in the CL.

Of all the media hype about clash of the titans match this is probably the biggest rubber-duck game of all time.

We just have to pick ourselves up and go on another no-lose streak.
