What a fucking game.

I can't wait.

IF we can win this (and this is going to be extremely difficult mind) we'd be back in with a shout in our group. It would also be of extreme importance to our players self-confidence after yet another sorry loss in the League.

There are often only a few games that will define your Season. This is very much one of these.

I reckon the United game was the first. Even though we've started poorly and been extremely unlucky as well, we still managed to beat our nearest rivals, this even without Steven Gerrard playing. If nothing else that's an important lesson. We can still beat everyone. Even without our talismanic captain.

Come Lyon on Wednesday we will see our team full of squadies battle their hearts out I'm sure, whether it'll suffice to get the win is still to early to say, but I've got a feeling that we've not capitulated just yet.

COME ON YOU REDS

So what's the deal anyways?

Are we reliant on other results now or is our fate still in our own hands?

I'm dreading it. Lose or draw, and our season is more or less over before it's even begun. Lyon can afford to play defensively and catch us on the break. I think back to the Marseille away game two years ago, when we needed to win - and destroyed them 4-0. But Torres and Gerrard were both fit and on top form in that game. Without them, this is going to be really tough and nervewracking.

Theoretically we could win all three remaining games and still not qualify. But it's in our hands in the sense that it might well come down to goal difference in the games between us and Fiorentina - meaning we'd have to beat them by three clear goals at Anfield.

Tough enough already, but we've got to beat Lyon first anyway...

It's going to be stupidly nervewrecking. But isn't this what Liverpool Football Club is all about really?

In one of the best Seasons we've had since the glory days we almost didn't qualify from the Group-stages and then we went on to win it all. And I'm quite sure that when we win no. 19 it'll more or less be decided on a goal in the 87th minute in the last round of the Season.

So Gerrard will obviously be a big miss come Wednesday. Torres will be a big miss too. Johnson, Agger, Aquilani, Skrtl, Aurelio and Riera as well if none is going to make it. It's fair to say that we've got our backs solid planted against the wall.

But we're not going to surrender.

Liverpool never does.

*whispers at the top of my lungs; we'll batter them*

I'm note completely sure but if we win against Lyon and then go on and win big against Firenze and Hungary then we're home safe.

It'll be decided on behalf of the scoreline between us, Lyon and Firenze if we end up on even points if I'm not mistaken?

I'm not very excited, if at all.

I've written this season off.

This, to the letter.

Possibly, but then we will lose and be knocked out.

IF Lyon manages not to lose against Fiorentina in their last encounter and we win our games then the Italians will end up on only 9/10 points. (Can't see any team drop points to Debreceni).

We are currently holding on to three (3§!) points and can therefore reach 12 if we win our remaning fixtures.

A draw against Lyon leaves us with only a theoretical chance as we'd then have to rely on Fiorentina to drop points at home against Lyon and then we'd still have to beat them thoroughly at home soil.

I'm bound to get one right.

I stopped doing positive predictions when my 'we'll batter them' before every game against the likes of Fulham, West Ham, Stoke, Hull et al, inevitably meant we would draw

Sadly, my new tactic of being slightly more objective (and pessimistic) has meant that my predicion success ratio has gone way up

That, though, is the natural POV when Lucas/ Zorba/ Insua/ Eggnog et al start games

Haha..

I don't think I have it in me though, to predict that we'll lose a game*.

*Ok maybe in a Summer-friendly against Myriaki Wanderers but that's it.

I'm not excited at all and I'm extremely pessimistic about our chances of winning the game, let alone qualification.

As ever we've got a chance if Torres plays, but if not Kuyt has to start performing, as does Yossi if played in his proper position.

And I'm a bit tired of this "defining game" bollocks. Every match seems to be a defining game. "Beat the Mancs and our season will start from there", "Let's continue this form into Fulham", "Lets bounce back against Lyon". Argh!

I wonder, which would the majority prefer;

a) Out of the CL but qualify for Europa Liga

or

b) Knocked out without even Europa Liga, which means can concentrate fully on league and FA Cup.

Well b) isn't going to happen as Debreceni won't win any games.

That said I won't be excited at all to watch us in the Europa League.

I just want us to progress in Champions League.

Hence I choose c).

I can't see us winning this in our present state.

Benitez might as well risk Aquilani for an hour because if he puts anything else out we lose anyway
