I have found the spiteful, venomous abuse of a decent pro on this thread quite sickening.

if it helps i wasn't calling young a retard. our decision to sign him is what is retarded.

i also wouldn't call him a decent pro. he earns 50k a week. can he kick with his left foot? why does he not spend two hours after training to learn to use his left foot. why does he not dedicate himself to studying football and improving tactically to make himself into a top class full back. exactly, he does his job, then drives home in his porche. decent pro my arse.

I agree that for the money they get, one would expect footballers to be able to use both feet, but it's unreasonable to single out Luke Young for this kind of vitriol. How many genuinely two-footed players have we had either in our current squad or in previous squads? Riise only used his right foot to avoid falling over, but nobody attacked him about that.

some people did attack him. sven something. people attack kuyt for his touch. they attack carragher for hoofing.

the difference is those players were good enough to still be in our team. young is being singled out because he isn't. and it is partly his own fault that he isn't.

What is it with the cack-footers? Berger had the turning circle of an oil tanker.

berger was better off working on his left foot in training. because it was magical. in fact if he kicked with his right foot id fine him a weeks wages.

it's like you have an uzi on one hand, and a pea shooter on the other. fuck the peas, just make sure the real weapon gets better and better.

luke young unfortunately has a pea shooter, and a twig. so it is better for him to have two pea shooters.

Really don't see what all the negative fuzz is about.

A cheap back-up signing with loads of Prem-experience. Nothing wrong with that particular during these cash-strapped times.

Snap.

We need a squad of players, and i'm of the opinion he is much better than Carra at RB who doesn't have the legs for it anymore.

I just read in the Guardian that we have only five of the newly required 8 over-21 homegrown players in our 25 man squad.

That would make Young a very necessary signing.

So, looks like a deal has fallen through. Young has apperantly fallen out with MON, Villa want him off the wage bill, earns about 55k a week. This transfer could still happen I guess, as he will leave Villa.

Heard we offered him 35k and he wanted a golden hand shake from Villa to move on, there are also some stories about we moving on cause we think 2.75 mill is to much for a 31 year old with 1 year left on his contract.

If this deal falls through, I'd put a bid in for Palace right back, Nathan Clyne he'll be a top player. 19 years old.

Luke Young has risked the wrath of Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill by stalling on a move to Liverpool as he wants a pay-off.

Liverpool have agreed a fee of £2.5million with Villa for the unsettled versatile defender, who earns currently around £40,000-a-week. But Young is insisting on a 'golden goodbye' from Villa Park before leaving as he would have to take a drop in wages at Liverpool.

Right-back Young, 31, joined Villa in August 2008 from Middlesbrough on a bumper contract. His tough stance means his relationship with O'Neill is set to plummet to a new all-time low.

Young has been unhappy for months after being played left-back before losing his right-back berth to central defender Carlos Cuellar.

O'Neill now needs to generate funds for transfers after being ordered to sell-to-buy this summer. Hel has been told to cut the club's annual £70m wage bill before owner Randy Lerner sanctions any new additions and the Villa boss has warned Young he may not be included in their official 25-man Premier League squad if he rejects the chance to go.

"We will see how that develops," said O'Neill, who has omitted Young from Villa's squad for this weekend's Guadiana Cup in Portugal. "He is having a think about it. If he chooses to go that's it, if he chooses to stay then he needs to start playing because with the new rules I have to name a 25-man squad for the Premier League."

Let's get a starting LB in first before looking at squaddies. I suppose the Mascherano sale is pivotal in acquiring any new players.

I would take take a hardline stance with Inter and demand a full £25M for Mascherano. We can't still be looking for players at the end of the transfer window. Ideally we should be done by next weekend!

Agree about taking a hard line, but asking for £25 mill.wouldn't qualify. The fee should be set at £30 mill.at the very least. We can haggle around that if need be.

Saying in the echo the move has been pulled.
oh, thank goodness!

£25M plus Cambiasso will be acceptable for me simply because it would solve the Mascherano replacement dilemma and leave us with sufficient funds to get in a devent striker and left back.

French Press: Reds interested in ClercPosted on Thursday, 29th July 2010 by David Tully

French newspaper L’Equipe believes that both Liverpool and Stoke are tracking former Lyon right back Francois Clerc. The French international is currently available on a free transfer after running down his contract with the French club but the 27 year old has had to fight off rumours of a serious knee injury. Clerc has denied the rumours, stating in L’Equipe:

“I am a French international, a free agent, I have contact with very good clubs, but there is a stumbling block. It has all started with a rumour from people with ill intentions, who don’t want me to get success away from Lyon. (The rumour) was I could not play football anymore. Some even said I had a 10 centimetre gap in my knee. It is completely false, my knee is perfectly fine, but that rumour caused me trouble. I am keen to make any trip for any examinations needed.â€

This guy is acutally quite good.

for free, and better than Degen(could anyone be worse?) we might as well if the Young move doesn't go through.

If he hates playing LB that much, we should probably look elsewhere anyway.
Yeah

Trouble is he's described specifically as a RB whereas it's primarily a LB we're after.

Depends on how he compares with Kelly IMO. Unless Clerc is clearly better, I'd prefer to stick with an existing English option.

He was a French bench warmer 3 or 4 years ago! His ex-team mate, Revielle (sp), is ahead of him for both club and country.

Francois Clerc is a pretty good player actually. Didn't realise he was still only 27 - he seems to have been around for ages. IMO he's better than Reveillere, but he has had injury problems in the past. And I've seen him play LB - not brilliantly, but he's solid there in an Arbeloa-style way. Very much an Arbeloa-style player in fact. For free, he'd be a good pick-up, as he'd probably cost more like £7-9m if he was under contract.
