we tell degen to bugger off in one move and buy luke young in the next move. ha ha, awesome...
Good move from my perspective, as long as he's a squad buy to cover the fullback positions.

Not Championship Manager exciting, but pragmatic and an undeniable improvement from what we have.

It is the type of transfer Roy made at Fulham a few times. Sign up a steady pro who is forgotten about to an extent (Zamora, Duff, Hughes (I think he signed Hughes)) and play them regularly. Through good man management and coaching improve the players confidence and self-belief. In the case of Zomora some of his displays last season were astonishing considering what he had done in his career up to that point and I think Roy can take a fair amount of the credit on that score.
That's great approach to take at a mediocre club with few ambitions
Don't you get tired of posting the same old negative, moany bollocks?

Most people have surmised that he'd be back up. Which would surely be better than picking up some foreign guy on a free who's never played in England before.

It's an approach that works. Though whereas with Fulham, established 'decent' players were picked up for the first team, here he's kicked off by signing Joe Cole, a proven Premiership player from Chelsea, a proven English International and one of the most coveted players in the England squad.

Bit of a difference there. Though no surprise you chose to ignore it to help your agenda. Again.

Young is considering his options! Villa's bench or ours?

Has anyone considered that he may turn us down?

Villa has already told him to look for a new club ... he'd be nuts to stay there now.

Luke Young joins Aston Villa squad in Portugal as he considers move to Liverpool
Jul 28 2010 By Mat Kendrick
Add a commentRecommend Luke Young jetted off to Portugal with the rest of the Aston Villa squad this afternoon with an offer from Liverpool still on the table.

The 31-year-old right back is mulling over a move to Anfield after Villa accepted a £2.5 million bid from Roy Hodgson's reds.

Young is believed to be agonising over his decision because he fears being stuck on the bench if he joins the Merseyside giants.

The former Middlesborough defender has fallen out of favour at Villa Park since losing his place to converted centre-back Carlos Cuellar.

And Young would be reluctant to go to Liverpool if he was behind Glen Johnson and Jamie Caragher in the pecking order for the right back role.

Martin O'Neill insisted that Young joined up with the squad for the Guadiana Cup in order to boost his pre-season fitness.

Have checked with #LFC, who say Fabio Aurelio has not been offered a pay as you play. And seems Young can't agree personal terms...

The fact he's mulling over the move is good news in my opinion. I'd say it's a clear indication that he's destined for the bench here. If I was being offered that at his age and I wanted first team football then I'd be doing exactly the same.

He's apperantly looking for 50k a week though, and he is one of the top earners at Villa.

what the fuck is a squad player? a player is a player. why don't you just speak in plain english and call him what he his. insufficient quality player.

whether we play luke young, or stephen darby, either way we're getting fucked. so i'd rather not have to pay out £2.5m and tons of undeserved wages for the pleasure of being fucked by some no mark winger.

we had a choice of voronin or n'gog. either one was going to fuck us so you have to accept it. but at least with n'gog at the end of hte fucking we come out of it with a £4-5m player who we can sell. the same with insua and krygiakos (agger at lb). we ended up with a £5m sale as opposed to a worthless greek.

these are simple fucking decisions. either buy a left back good enough to get in your team, or develop one of the youngsters. don't fucking make a retard signing and chat shit to me about it being a "squad player". fuck off.

We signed Arbeloa who turned out to be pretty good for a similar fee. It'd be nice to see if we could spot a bargain who would be good for the club in the long-term rather than some shit journeyman who wants to see out his playing days on a fat wedge.

But enough about Lucas Neill. Remember in years past being linked to that sack of shit on about 100K per week.

Yup, I've been thinking about this all day, and whilst their is some benefit in signing Young, I do think we could do better, even for less than £3M.

45 k shit away on Deggen is exactly why Roy has likely been told to get him in the door for 30k a week, or forget it.
Well we pay Degen £45k a week to do fuck all so what's another £5k!
£0.25M per year - I'd like you to be in charge of my pay raise at Xmas.

Having said that I'm ambivalent as to whether we sign young or not.

Darby is shit and i would much prefer to have the experience of luke young. Pretty sure most fans would

Arbeloa was 23-24 when we signed him and he had a great season at deportivo. I don't think it's the right comparison.
It just struck me, from being a mediocre nobody in the spanish league, to playing for Liverpool, becoming a part of the Euro 2008/WC 2010 winning squad and moving back to Real.
Arbeloa has a lot to thank Liverpool and Benitez for.

I think the expectation level is set a bit high with some people. Last season, I'd take Torrard and Reina out of the equation and then compare squads like for like and we generally had eight worse outfield players man for man than everyone we played against. That's why we kept getting beat... Our squad is fucking shit. I'd say we had three very good players, a few quite good ones, and the rest are bollocks. This dude only has to be better than Insua to improve us.

Our squad is poor but that's a massive exaggeration.

Not a massive one. Not when we were missing Agger and Johnson and Aquilani. We'd start with Skrtl and Insua and Lucas and Ngog - I mean against Wolves away we even started with Kuyt up front on his own and I'd look at the side and just wonder how the fuck we'd ended up with these nobheads in the starting 11 or in the positions they were in.

In the papers today it says that he is looking for a pay off from Villa as he would have to take a wage cut to move here.
