Hmmm, I suppose this is okay, but like others have mentioned, it depends on who else is signed this summer.

Attacking fullbacks rarely - if ever - do well when they're played further forward. I've seen it tried a number of times these many years and not known one single case where it's succeeded.

Did you have John Arne Riise in mind then? When he was played as a left-sided midfielder he was awful. It seemed to expose his extreme left-footedness, so that Johnny Rockets ran round and round in circles trying to get the ball on his left foot, and the opposition defence had time to sort themselves out before the cross came in.

Heggem?

As long as we get another left back, this is not really such a big issue. We certainly needed two left backs. Considering our options prior to this were 1. An untried 16 year old 2. An untried 20 year old played out of position, i think i can live with this signing.

He also covers both full-back position and he is a steady-eddie type of player. I don't really see what all the fuzz is about.

I think this is a clear case of price-tag clouding people's judgement.
Amended ... if you were taking about Jack Robinson.
I suspect he was talking about Kelly and Wilson
Maybe .... except Wilson is a CB (sure Kelly is the other one of course). Guess he'll tell us soon enough 😉

I got excited when I saw the headline on Sky and thought, ok that's quoted price is a mistake. Was thinking of the speedy winger not the fullback. Reality check!

Luke is a decent signing. Likely to be a squad player as we are short on numbers and he does have experience to cover both flanks. Not an edge of the seat signing but decent enough. Whatever happened to the "reported" Figueroa deal?

Liverpool would not confirm a rumoured £2.5m bid for Young, whom Reds boss Roy Hodgson is believed to have tried to sign for Fulham last season. Young, 31, was made available for transfer in May.

"There has been an offer from a football club which Luke is mulling over," O'Neill said. The full-back joined Villa in summer 2008 from Middlesbrough in a £5m move and became a key performer in his first season at Villa Park. Last season he suffered early injury problems and was later given compassionate leave after the death of his brother.

"If [the move] doesn't materialise then he would join us [in Portugal for the Guadiana Cup]," added O'Neill. "He needs to play some football soon, so we'll see how that develops."

So people are getting in a flap because, our squad was paper thin after we've sold some underperforming fringe players like Insua, Riera etc and then complain when we look to start replacing them with someone who is clearly a squad player, can perform a role in both full back positions and is an experienced PL player....all for £2.5m

We're not made of money and whilst that £2.5m seems a lot considering our financial circumstances, its actually not that much is it?

Some people need to calm down and see what the picture looks like when its finished rather than doom mongering constantly.

I'd be happy with Young as a squaddie or an interim first teamer.

I can understand the idea of squad player but for 2.75 million for a 31 yr old who's not even good enough to get into the England squad devoid of back up full backs?, rather save the money and give the chance to a youngster or reserve player. Even if the youngster is not good enough, at least he may now be given the chance instead of finding his place taken by a player not goog enough to get into a Villa team who priortise on having average english men. Save the fcking money!!!!!!!!!

Our main back-up LB was a youngster/reserve last season. Unfortunately our first-choice LB was injured all season, so the back-up played almost every game. And it was fucking disastrous.

I don't think there's any harm in having an experienced reserve full-back who can cover both flanks.

I wasn't thinking of LFC players only. As an old codger in 6CM terms my memories go right back to the days of Terry Cooper, Billy Bonds and the like, none of whom could translate decent attacking play from fullback into similarly good play further forward on the few occasions when their clubs tried it. Cooper actually started out as a winger, but you could see why Leeds moved him back into defence.

Heggem is a bit of an anomaly in this context, in that he never had long enough really to prove himself. He did look promising at times at RM and I would accept that he might have become the exception to the rule.

I understand that but isn't Wilson capable of playing both flanks?
Just rather save the money and deal with what we have, buying a reserve full back for me doesn't seem priority at the moment.

Wilson is a centre back, who can do a job at left back if needed, much like Agger. He's left footed so I'd imagine he'll be pretty horrible at right back.

I do think playing Agger at left back should receive serious consideration. He's a very talented defender, but his weakness at CB is that he is not a very good header of the ball. This doesn't matter so much for a full back.

At least he's young enough to learn the position, I'm not against the Young signing but just think it's going to be a waste of money for little gain.

At least he's young enough to learn the position and imagine he may do a job there which is same as what Young may do, I'm not against the Young signing but just think it's going to be a waste of money for little gain. He's just not a good player anyway.

This from Wikipedia -

Luke Paul Young (born 19 July 1979) is an English footballer, who recently played in the right back position for Liverpool in the English Premier League.

Really??? When was this then? :-\

we tell degen to bugger off in one move and buy luke young in the next move. ha ha, awesome...
Good move from my perspective, as long as he's a squad buy to cover the fullback positions.

Not Championship Manager exciting, but pragmatic and an undeniable improvement from what we have.

Agger at left back is an option. It would enable him to get forward more often than he does now and he certainly has the skill to provide a threat.

It is the type of transfer Roy made at Fulham a few times. Sign up a steady pro who is forgotten about to an extent (Zamora, Duff, Hughes (I think he signed Hughes)) and play them regularly. Through good man management and coaching improve the players confidence and self-belief. In the case of Zomora some of his displays last season were astonishing considering what he had done in his career up to that point and I think Roy can take a fair amount of the credit on that score.

That's great approach to take at a mediocre club with few ambitions

Yeah, like Liverpool.
It's an excellent approach for a club with no money Brendan.
That's why Roy is the better man for Liverpool right now then Rafa would have been.

He's slimmer than him anyway.
That has to be a good start.
