Liverpool FC have rejected an improved offer of £40,000,001 from Arsenal for Luis Suarez.
The Gunners stepped up their pursuit of the Reds' top scorer on Tuesday – two weeks after their initial bid of £30million, rising to £35million with add-ons, was shunned.
The size of the new offer, which was submitted by Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, is significant.
The Londoners were under the belief that any offer in excess of £40million – hence the extra £1 – would trigger a release clause in the contract Suarez signed last August.
However, Liverpool have always insisted that is not the case with club officials only duty bound to inform the striker of bids exceeding that amount rather than having to actually accept that kind of figure.
Boss Brendan Rodgers intends to discuss Arsenal's latest approach with last season's 30-goal top scorer following today's friendly with Melbourne Victory at the MCG.
Arsenal's new offer was instantly dismissed with Liverpool's stance that Suarez is simply not for sale unchanged.
Despite Suarez's public pleas for a transfer this summer, Rodgers has made it clear that he expects the 26-year-old to honour a contract which still has three years to run.
The Reds value the striker in excess of £50million and unless they receive that kind of bid - coupled with a written transfer request – they won't even consider a deal.
Arsene Wenger has made Suarez his top summer transfer target after being frustrated in his attempts to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid.
But news of their increased offer being rejected should finally ram home to the Gunners boss that there is no chance of landing Suarez on the cheap.

So now what, he agrees fees & refuses to play for us, forcing us to sell him? Or he talks to them, they say they'll give him 150k a week & he demands that or refuses to play?

It's almost like we're setting out our objections publicly but are getting on with it anyway. Or we've slipped a deliberately vague term into the contract which Suarez's reps think it means something that we don't.

Im highly suspicious of this, I really cant see Arsenal coming up with that sort of cash given they havent bid over 25 million for Higuain and have repeatedly linked themselves with Rooney while never puttng any money on the table. I still cant help feeling Arsenal are not in this for themselves but are essentially a stalking horse for Madrid to drive the price down, and once we agree a fee with them Madrid will magically appear to offer the same amount, I assume Arsenal getting Higuain is conditional Suarez leaving to join Madrid so Wenger is having to do the leg work for them
At this point it looks like the board have decided how to play this one, a fee has obviously been set and we wont be selling him unless its met, given that this enquiry was knocked back out of hand then I imagine its significantly higher than 40 million. Good, Im happy to sell him for a massive fee cos hes a proper bell end and this has been dragging on too long, but the deal should be on our terms, hes got 3 years left to run and we are not actively trying to get rid so whatever fee we think is applicable should be met, or else they can kindly fuck off
