If he starts in central midfield at the World Cup for Brazil - What does that say about him and the 99% of this forum that have called him shit and a cunt for the last 3 years?

Go...

- And on that note, I'm off home.

I really don't blame him for much, it's the partnership that's wrong, not the player as such. When he's played alongside someone who compliments him, he and us have looked better (ditto Masher).

Ideally he'd have been an understudy to Masher or used in his more favoured role and stepped in every few games, instead he's been thrown in at the deepend because of the whole Alonso/Aquilani situation.

haha. Nice way to provoke a shitstorm before retreating.

Yup. I'm off to training, so someone else can clean up this mess. Enjoy...

I'm going to be a bit surprised if Lucas starts for them but having said that I actually thought he's looked far better for the past 4 or 5 games than I've seen all Season.

Seems somehow more confident when going into tackles and is not affraid of putting his foot through. Plays with a bit more pace as well.

I don't mind Lucas but he's looked particularly inept at times alongside Masher, probably for various reasons, but alongside the right partner in midfield you can do a lot worse than him.

I'll root for him to have a great World Cup that's for sure.

Brazil's short comings are in the center of midfield?
haha. this a good one. lucas, arrived with some promise. wasn't so bad this season, still not first team quality though. Boy's confidence is easily dented and it shows. needs to man up more than anything else. hope he gets s decent WC to boost his confidence

What if Brazil go out of the group stages, what about say about him then?

Because clearly, whether Brazil do good or bad is down to Lucas starting.

On a serious note, with the talent they've got, I think Brazil could carry Robbie Savage in their side.

the difference is lucas would be playing as an out and out holding midfielder with frankly brilliant attacking players taking the fight to the opposition.

we on the other hand use him in a CM two that is a creativity vacume and attacking players that range from brilliant to rubbish.

lucas should be masher's understudy with an attacking midfielder taking up the other slot in the CM.

The fact is, he's been one of our most consistent players this season, but very rarely having games where he blows you away- in fact, this just doesn't happen. Some great games home to Lille and Benfica in particular, and hasn't deserved a fraction of the criticism that's been leveled at him- someone said he did absolutely fuck all against Burnley the other week, seemingly oblivious to the fact that Lucas had played a sublime pass to set up a goal and had a good game generally. He is prejudged by people who accept the negative hype unthinkingly. That being said, is he ever going to be a player that consistently controls the tempo of our play in CM or be the dangerman breaking from midfield? I'm still not convinced he's made for the PL, and he still looks pricey at 6m.

Hope he has a boss tournament and comes back having increased his value greatly. Then we should sell.

It tells me that a mediocre player with some talent has Liverpools first team as his arena to practice and develope his play, whereas the Liverpool reserves should be the correct arena for that kind of development.

I don't think he's going to start with Brazil but the fact he's in the squad should help him.

I maintain that Lucas is not the player we need; as I've said all season he's far better than the majority on here have and do give him credit for but he's still not the player we need. We're so lacking in dynamic players to make something happen its untrue and Lucas is a part of this problem rather than the solution.

Brazil are literally over run by dynamic players who will make something happen and, as such, Lucas would not be an issue in such a team. He can be a good squad player for us just now and may develop into a good starting player (in the Xabi mould) but right now he's not what we need.

i think he'll do well

Me too to be honest.

He's a (very) poor man's Mascherano.

He is good at breaking up play and works hard for the team but is crap on the ball.

I would think it says more about the quality of Brazillian central midfielders than it would do about fans being wrong.

masherano/lucas CM = fucking rubbish

I love rafa but the above is a close to a fact as you can possibly get without it actually being a fact.

Shame he didnt include it in his 'Facts' rant last season. Would have given his little tirade a lot more credibility.

That it's good. We'll need a pumped up and confident Lucas next year once Mascherano has fucked off.

Lucas is shit, and if he's still a starting CM for us next season, we'll have another shit season.
Because he's shit

Who is his competition in the Brazil Midfield? Melo for a start and that Benfica midfielder is it? I don't watch that much of Brazil. Where do they deploy Diego and Kaka?

This.

He really is no more than a backup. He is on par with a over-the hill Nicky Butt. If he has more than 15 starts in the league next year, i can guarantee we won't finish top-4.

Doesn't that old fart Gilberto play ahead of him? Will Lucas even make it in the squad? Hes a very average player, meh.

He's a good young player and has improved again this year. His reading of the game when the opposition has possession is excellent and he's made some important interceptions and tackles at times. He covers a hell of a lot of ground and keeps his passing game simple with the odd nice through ball. If Masher is out (or playing right back) he's a very good player to have as defensive midfielder. He reminds me very much of Flamini for Arsenal before he left for Milan - undervalued by most. When he's played alongside a more offensive midfielder (Gerrard, Aqui) he's generally looked much better and he's also done well when pushed forward. Moreover he's attitude is top class and he never goes missing however tough things get.

It's not his fault that Rafa has persisted playing him alongside Masher in midfield. I hope he'll stick around and continue to grow in confidence.

lucas is pretty much first choice for brazil. I'll be amazed if he doesn't start for them.

i doubt he will start.. there are plenty of better options than Lucas for their central midfield.

Hopefully he has a great world cup so we can sell him for a decent amount.

I'll make two points

1) I guess that means Ryan thinks Kleberson was good. He played for Brazil in a world cup too.
2) I think Dunga will most likely go with Thiago Motta (Inter) over Lucas as the DM. Motta is a better player -

I guess time will tell - the squad gets announced on May 11th I think.
No he isn't. He's played 4 times for brazil. Starting just twice one of which he was sent off in.
Melo and Gilberto has been the prefered 2 holding.
Lucas will go I'm sure but he's unlikely to play. And the difference with Brazil is that they don't need every player to contribute. Lucas getting it and passing it simple to kaka, robinho, Diego, elano and fabiano ought to be enough.
