Lovren vs. Caulker

Opinions please...
Who is the better player and why?
Who will add steel and stability to our leaky defence?

Can't say I remember noticing Caulker a lot, just a solid PL CB. Lovern on the other hand ....

There must be a reason one is quoted at £20m and the other £8m. Besides Southampton wanting to screw us for raping them.

Lovren is better. Caulker has a lot of potential but we need a leader now. Lovren has those qualities and can step right in and command the defence. He's also just 24 years old.

No doubt at all imho. Dont care about the extra fee either, we need the right players.

Not totally convinced by either. I'm surprised we haven't been linked with some other centre halves besides these two, given the need. We should be going for the best we can possibly get in this position, and I doubt Lovren is that.

Anyone at the World Cup (or not) impress you? Trying to think of young, standout CBs who are leaders of the backline? It's tough.

Caulker is half the price but is Lovren the one we need?

What do we need? A vocal, assertive, commanding defender. We need someone to take charge back there and lead our defense. To speak in cliché terms, a marshal back there. So, is Lovren twice as good as Caulker carrying out those lovely defending clichés? If so then he is worth the extra money.

I'd plump for Lovren but only because I know him as a player. I haven't seen much of Caulker. Can anyone advise?

We going to get mugged paying £20 million plus for Lorven
Looking at the market, it seems a fair price to me. Bought a season ago for £8million, and had a solid year in the league, proving he can more than hack it.

If Lovren is the big shouty Hyypia type we need we should go all out for him.

If there is anyone better in that mould i'm not sure though. Doesn't seem to be a wealth of amazing CB talent

Is Lovren then everything Sakho is supposed to be?
I think Sakho was always supposed to be the big, strong, athletic type, with Lovren being a calm, composed type, not comparable really, perfect partners for each other.

Don't know much about Caulker to be honest. What I have heard about Lovren is that he is a very vocal defender which we definitely need. Our defence has lost a vocal GK and a very vocal Carra in the past couple of seasons and that is causing us a host of issues.

How much more would could a Hummels be (though he does lack some pace)

Probably at least £10million more (I think we'll get Lovren for under £20million), and probably less likely to want to come. He's a wonderful defender though.

Yeah I'm in the Lovren camp too. Are we all okay paying extra for Lovren if the other option was Caulker?

Steven Caulker is a man in demand with Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace both triggering his 8m release clause from relegated Cardiff City.

Liverpool have also been long linked with a move for the centre half where manager, Brendan Rodgers, is a known admirer. The stumbling block on any move for the player is Caulkers wage demands with the player looking for a staggering £80k per week.

The Reds have no intention of paying such a high wage for a player that is only forging a reputation in the premiership. Rodgers has been a big fan of the commanding defender since the days of Swansea but if Caulker wishes for a reunion he would need to significantly reduce his wage demands.

That is good to see. Caulker probably isn't worth paying crazy wages too. How much is Luke Shaw getting out of interest? Another player forging a rep in the premiership.
