I remember the days when these threads were up as soon as the last game was over (sometimes before). The current apathy on SCM is appalling. Euro matches are still exciting for me even though we rarely play our strongest teams. A chance to see different opposition and to see some of our youngsters get game-time to see how they are shaping up.

Anyway. Scion. Had been playing well but currently 5th in the Swiss league (away record 1-2-2 5 GF and 8 GA). Had a good home win against Rubin Kazan in the 1st round of the EL group stage. Manager's neck is on the block.

Rodgers said in his pre-match that youngsters and fringe players, as well as some regulars (consideration given to resting players for Everton on Sunday), would get a start so maybe we can expect Toure, Gomez, Allen, Rossiter, Lallana, Ibe and Origi to start. And seeing as BR seems to be back on the 3 CBs gig :

------------------------------- Bogdan

---------- Toure ------------ Skrtel ----------- Gomez

--------------------------------- Allen

------------------ Rossiter -------------- Can

------ Ibe ------------------ Lallana ----------------- Origi

-------------------------------- Ings

Rumours are that Ings will be rested.

I'd imagine a few regulars will be on the bench because with Benteke, Henderson, Lovren, Firmino and Flanno out (and as BR said Sturridge must be rested as he's not ready for 2 games a week) we are beginning to look a bit thin if we rest too many. If Origi leads the line I'm struggling to see who else plays LM, maybe Moreno.

It's not 'appalling' at all, Froggy, come on old chap, get real. Combine the horribly elongated structure of the Europa League with our recent depressing performances in Europe and our general state of instability as a club, and it's completely understandable why most fans aren't really arsed about an early tie in this soulless competition.

Anyway, I like your team. Can needs to stay away from the defence from now on and concentrate on progressing as a midfielder. And hopefully Kolo will get a run-out as captain.

And in the spirit of sunny positivity, here's the man himself being ridiculously lovable:

I find it increasingly difficult to get even remotely interested, never mind excited, about any game we're playing.

That won't be an issue playing Everton, but as the prognosis is bleak for that game it may only increase the apathy afterwards.

I've not felt like this since Hodgson was here.

If that makes me a bad fan so be it.

I do hope that the team tonight is a fresh one with some younger players so we can see what they can do.

Tbh though, regardless of the manager & the teams form, this tie wouldn't appeal much, mostly cos the Europa League & endless run of meaningless games is shite.

Perhaps we'll see a 4-3-3 like this:

Bogdan
Clyne, Gomez, Sakho, Moreno
Allen, Can, Rossiter
Ibe, Origi, Lallana

I don't think Origi should be playing up front on his own at the moment so I'd prefer to see Ings starting alongside him.

We're pretty light on fullbacks, eh?

We could play Jose as long as there's no ping pong tournament on.

Forgotten all about him ! Yep. This would suit him .... as LM and Origi goes upfront. I still prefer Origi left and Ings centre though and hope that's what it'll be.

EDIT. Hang on. He's not in the EL squad so scratch all that !

Brendan boldly announced that he will be putting reserves out for the Sion match, saving his first-teamers for Goodison Park on Sunday.

Superficially there seems logic in that.

However:

The season Brendan is having, we might well lose or draw against Sion with the reserves. And then we might go on to lose against Everton with the first teamers.

I can't disagree with the logic though Portly. The rest is all 'ifs, buts and maybes' and we'll have to see how it pans out. Personally I'd do the same thing as BR though (or what it seems he'll do) - I quite like the team I put up in the OP and if it's anything like that we should be able to get the win without having to revert to bringing on 'A-Teamers' from the bench.

We set such a low bar, even when winning at the beginning of this season, that I'm actually encouraged by the last couple displays, and curious to watch games. Meanwhile those of you afflicted with hope are already screwed just a few games into the season.

I'm at least hoping that we'll see some more attractive football. He'll never sort out the defense, so I'd rather win 4-3 and 3-1 and lose handily and at least have the odd goal worth watching. There's a lot of young players in the club, and some are quite good and will survive current management. The one thing I can say that's good about the current regime is they have tried to get technically gifted players in. Any amount of fluidity in our attacking play, even at the expense of risk, can see them have some confidence.

What I can't fathom is how some have more enthusiasm for managerial change than for the games, as though sacking our manager and buying whoever seems popular at the time and happens to be available has been such a fun process. It's the whole "he is the messiah, I've followed a few" feeling.

If we rest Ings, this could well be Origi's best chance in a while to demonstrate that he's anything more than just a competent forward. He was quite involved in the last european game but looked every bit a backup striker.

We should be taking this competition seriously..

It probably our best chance of qualifying for the Champions League.. So I expect us to start fielding stronger sides in the knock out rounds

Though that being said, we don't win trophies under Bwedan Wodgers..

That's the Curb Your Enthusiasm tune. It suits him.

Our best chance of qualifying for the CL is still the league, it'd only be the Europa league when we get to the latter stages(and we inevitably fuck up the league). Winning this competition is hard and takes a lot of luck, I'd say we haven't a hope of winning it this year.

Pretty much, it's a soft as shite cliche. People talk about it like it's a meaningless trophy that's a piece of piss to win.

RTE Sport are saying all day that Irishman Daniel Cleary is expected to make his debut for Liverpool tonight.

Fuck off kolo. You're always smiling cause you're earning a bucket load of cash for doing fuck all.

Harsh on Kolo there. He's always tried to endear himself to the fans. He is earning a bucket load for doing fuck all, i'll give you that. #KoloWatch

Agreed.

I fucking hate the thing, as I believe I've mentioned once or twice. This is one of the reasons.

Loads of shitty games against below par opposition in shit far flung stadiums to get into a pretty hard last eight, currently with a manager who seems to excel in losing important matches when it comes to the crunch.

I just don't see the up side at all. I would have much preferred to finish lower in the league to avoid this cos I genuinely believe it fucks up your team's league position.

Now we're in it we have to try to win every match cos to do otherwise would be mental, but it will cost us in the league.
