Liverpool v United

I love him. Would be delighted if he's able to have a bounce back year
I doubt he'd bounce. He'd crash then break.

In all seriousness though, he really looks the part, albeit just pre season. I'd love it to continue. I suspect Klopp is going to treat him with kid gloves & play him sparingly in an attempt to keep him fit judging by his comments about him post match.

I like Sturridge, I think at his peak he was arguably the best striker in the country.

But sorry, as I've said before, even if he stays fit, if he can't sprint, accelerate and move around like the pitch like he used to, then he isn't good enough or worth the wages.

I have little patience for players who have to 'modify' their games due to declining physical assets and ability. It's more acceptable for midfielders and defenders, but for strikers? Especially ones whose game relied on pace and beating players with skill and speed? Fuck that, you're not as good, you never will be, so get rid.

I don't care how much you reinvent yourself by dropping deeper and deeper. Look at the likes of Owen, Torres, even Fowler. You're not as good as you used to be, so you're not good enough for Liverpool

There's so many players who try and do it, and how many actually achieve anything close to the success and quality they had in their prime?

I know it's a friendly but our passing is so much better. The through balls seem far more accurate.

There was a moment in the match were they filmed Robinson from a Pitch camera, and you can see a narrow opening between two Scum attackers and he play a steady pass through to a fellow red CB (Gomez?). That kind of finding any openings, be brave to use them and keep the ball was the big difference between the teams.

Uniteds plan was pretty much:first of all clearing it. Second; if the clearance was decent try to hoof it forward, if not the midfielder would prolong it to a throw in.

But we only need him to be quite useful to be our second best striker.

I saw that exact pass. Hard driven pass . Impressive.

What position did Shakiri play? I'm wondering whether he'd slot in as a #8 type player a la Oxlade/Lallana?

How could anyone not like Sturridge, it's impossible

Yup. Beautiful, elegant player and one of the most complete lethal strikers when fit. Love watching him dribbling and dancing around defenders when on song.
But you know remaining fit is not happening.

@Rosco At some point (2-3 years ago), did you post some statistics or pose an argument that Sturridge was as important as Suarez in our last title challenge as he scored more goals which made a difference or did I imagine that argument up?

Didn't watch the game but saw his highlights here:

Preseason results mean fuckall. But the games themselves, give you an insight into player abilty.
I was REALLY impressed with his first touch, strength, forward passing, one touch passing and ability to take the ball in tight areas. For 12m, it was a no brainer. He's already worth about 30m on ability alone. Against "bus parking" teams he will a great weapon to have. His eye for a pass, set piece ability, ability to work half a yard of space, and particular his long range shooting will be invaluable.

Also, a point on the Sturridge goal. I was particularly impressed with the pace he showed to get in behind Bailly, and the strength to hold him off. I noticed first half (and when we played United at OT in the league), Bailly (though he scored an OG) was the one defender we struggled to get past as he has the pace to keep up with our 3, but also the strength to bully them off the ball. Well, Shaqiri was having none of it. All that muscle is good for something.

sturridge at his best was an absolutely lethal striker. Even if he gets back to 75% of his best form and his peak fitness, he'll be a great squad member.

What was your point by curiosity?
Really? Apologies, I thought it was obvious. Season after season blighted by injuries, playing a handful of games a year and the Arsenal fans totally done with his shit, then suddenly out of nowhere 38 games in a premier league season.
Maybe.....just maybe....

As for Fabinho looking a little sluggish in the pre-season – isn't that kind of the Brazilian thing? Every year Firmino looks like he can't be arsed to take pre-season games seriously, then becomes our most hard-working player once the real thing starts.

Ah, yeah I thought that was the point. Sturridge is probably Even more injury plagued then Van Persie, but it would be amazing if Studge just suddenly is available for 38 league games.
I’m fearfully expecting him to break down at any minute, mind.

Hope he stays fit, he deserves it.

Things are looking too good at the moment. It's a bit weird.
Hahaha.

Watched Everton v Rennes with Bex grandad & dad the other day.

I worked very very hard to remain unbiased & not watch as a red but a football fan.

Both were massively pissed off. Her grandad said (& I quote) "Well, at least we aren't playing well & winning all our games in pre season likes youse, whenever that happens you have a shit season". I obv pointed out Dortmund which he ignored!

Bex dad replied "well if that's how it works we'll win the fucking league then".

He then told me he'd watched a couple of our pre season matches & he thought Keita was boss & that he was really really pissed off how good he was. Then started on about Howard Kendall (I lost interest at that point).

In fairness when I initially saw Keita play the first thing I thought of was Howard Kendall. So I know where he’s coming from.
Hahaha.

Yeah, that close contact running with the ball at pace, tacking, taking players on, running box to box. Almost Maradona eaqie ball control. It's uncannily like Howard Kendall.

They're blues. They always default to the mid 80s at some point in every conversation cos that's the last time the were relevant.

Eventually you learn to just nod politely & let them have their moment. Then ask them about their ambitions for next season & watch them squirm.

Love the overhead kick. A perfect "up yours" to moanrinho, who was rumoured to want him as well.

I said on another thread I was intrigued by what Shaq will bring to the team. He took it like fish to water yesterday. He was rapid and busy, and tries to make things happen with or without the ball. More importantly he seems to be able to fill in on the left and right flank, plus the number "10" role. Everyone is saying he will sit on the bench as cover but i suspect he will be more involved than that.

Yes, early days and all but it's really promising. A shrewd signing at 13m.

Yeah, when we knew we were going to sign Shaq I think there were plenty of raised eyebrows (my own eyebrows needed to be peeled from the ceiling), albeit with begrudging acceptance that he would at least provide reasonable cover. Now it's like, boy can fucking play!

I could never quite get my head around how he ended up at a mid table ( soon to be relegated ) team like Stoke. We had been connected with him in the past, and it seemed that ourselves and other decent teams overlooked him for whatever reason. I think we have been quite fortunate to get a second chance to get him, and at a bargain price. I hope the lad does well here and puts it to the doubters from around the league.

I dont know why people would doubt him. Whenever he has played for the swiss team or a club team ... he has at least one or two very good moments that stand out...plus he can score very good goals. I think here at LFC he will have the right players to work with.

What i dont want is him to be the cuntyo replacement ... i see shaq as cover for front 3 plus no. 10.
