Liverpool v United

I could never quite get my head around how he ended up at a mid table ( soon to be relegated ) team like Stoke. We had been connected with him in the past, and it seemed that ourselves and other decent teams overlooked him for whatever reason. I think we have been quite fortunate to get a second chance to get him, and at a bargain price. I hope the lad does well here and puts it to the doubters from around the league.

Behave. He's been fucking fortunate, not us.

We have been linked with him for what seems like aeons, but several high-profile moves don't seem to have worked out for whatever reason. And his move to Stoke certainly raised eyebrows, even if his stay there was a bit up and down, with some very impressive displays and highlight-reel goals, interspersed with diffidence and rumours of only turning up when he wanted to.

But his talent hasn't been in question really, more his application. He's quick, skilful and has a traction engine of a left foot. If he can deliver the commitment and work-rate Liverpool require, this could the chance he finally takes at a big club.

As a previous poster has pointed out, many of us viewed him as the - very important - cover for Mane and Salah in the wide attacking positions, where goal threat and pace are so vital, and that's still an option, but it is interesting to note the opportunity presented by the collapse of the Fekir signing and injury to Chamberlain, in the central attacking midfield option, in the midfield three.

Having Shaqiri playing with Mane, Salah and Firmino could be lethal, and certainly gives plenty of options (and more pace, end product and goal threat than Lallana)

Agreed - that prospect is quite exciting, especially with Keita/Fabinho/Hendo pulling the strings behind them.

Things are looking too good at the moment. It's a bit weird.
Agreed.

It's quite worrying that I actually rate our first team as the 2nd/3rd best in the league now (behind City & Chelsea). Which means there's an expectation on us to do well and actually challenge.

Maybe I'm being far too optimistic.. and..

Robertson and TAA aren't as good as I think they are...
Fabinho isn't an upgrade on Henderson...
Keita won't have a Kante-like impact on our midfield...
Alisson isn't in the same league as Ederson/Courtois/DDG...
Van Dijk isn't one of the best CBs in the league and we all massively overrate him...
Lovren is actually the absolute calamity every rival says he is...
Lallana/Shaqiri/Gini aren't good enough for the 3rd spot in midfield...
Our squad depth hasn't actually improved...
Firmino/Salah won't actually score many goals this year...
Mane won't actually continue his good form since Coutinho left...
Klopp isn't actually a good manager and only has a Counterpress strategy in his lockerroom.

But if the above is actually false... and we are as good as I think we are... I really do expect a title challenge this year. Which is slightly worrying, as I've never truly had such expectation before, because I've never really rated our squad depth/quality in relation to our rivals. This time, I do.

We've been burned too many times, I keep expecting it to all come crashing down.

Squad depth is obviously our weakness in comparison to a couple of our rivals, in contrast though we do seem to have a couple of younger players who seem to be maturing at exactly the right time, so if we're lucky we may be able to deal with rotation, injuries or suspensions better than perhaps it may seem on paper.

Yeah, I understand keniget's pessimism. This has all the hallmarks of a hugely optimistic fanbase, inflated with expectation, with the media (and other managers) heavily tipping us to be City's main challengers, as United, Chelsea and Arsenal all have major work to be done...... only for the fucking wheels to fall off by Xmas, as one or more of the things in ibromurph's list above becomes reality.

I'm still stupid enough to be confident though, even if I do share some misgivings. We've spent a load of money to make a good team even better. Not even Liverpool could fuck this up!

NO. NO WAY.

Come on guys.. Lets come down a bit. Voronin looked world class in pre-season. Lets save the judging until December.

Agreed.

I agree with a lot of this, particularly the fact that we massively overrate VVD. There's always a mistake or 2 in him, although he's certainly a huge improvement on what we had. However, I think you're being very harsh on Andy Robertson. The guy has been immense since he started with us.

Fuck me. You are not describing the VvD I've been watching.

Thing about VVD is he's not infalliable.

Look at Varane. Widely regarded as one the best now. Dropped an absolute clanger in the WC final, although it wasn't punished. But the majority of games, he's consistently good and to score against him and Ramos, you have to do well.

I'm hoping it's the same with Virgil. That to score past him, you have to be good and he doesn't make consistently the same type of mistake.

It's the same with Alisson, I feel like a lot of people are putting pressure on his like he will be a saviour, and he won't make a mistake. He will, ideally not immediately, but he will and hopefully he isn't punished for it (a big game). And if we do suffer for it, hopefully people/our fans/media don't go overboard (just because he cost a lot of money).

As we saw in the WC, even the great DDG/Lloris can drop a clanger. The top GKs are the ones that don't make 2 or 3 in a row, after a mistake.

Despite favouring Shaqiri for a while now, I must say that I agree. However Voronin isn't anywhere near Shaqiri skill wise and he was new to the league.

Ok, I probably was a bit harsh this time. Like I said, he’s a huge improvement. But I’ve seen him making mistakes.
All CBs make mistakes - unavoidable. Even the very best have one or two per game. You just hope it doesn't cost us and with VvD it rarely does 😉

I'm not sure that's fair

If only someone had listened to you Modo! We could be watching Will Buckley playing at Anfield now!

Will probably thinks the same, given he's playing for Bolton Wanderers.
We would have saved like £10 mill too.
But we should have listened to you actually and spared ourselves the sight of Firmino.

Yeah yeah whatever. Really can't be bothered looking up prior mistakes posters here made about players. Everyones been there

I can't help thinking that this kind of laziness is a large contributory factor in how often you're wrong.

Hahaha indeed.
I'm laughing at a pathetic, anonymous person to me, on some football board going out his way to look up my history on this board. What are you laughing about Mr Internet warrior with a lot of time on his hands?
What did you win?

I made you look like an even bigger idiot. Which is quite an achievement in itself.

Mr Buckley fanboy.
