Liverpool v Spartak Moscow Match Thread CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

All of the plaudits will go to the amazing attacking display from Firmino, Coutinho, Mane and Salah - and quite rightly - but Milner's second half display was quite simply sensational. Not showy or eye-catching like the others, but brutally efficient and made creating goals look simple

Milner has done more going forward in 45 mins than Moreno has all season.

Woah. What a performance. Missed the first 3 goals due to log in issues with my TSN app but blown away by the lads. Amazing.

Liverpool have scored 22 goals in the Champions League this season. They only scored 18 in 2004-05, when they won it.

Please please please let it be Real Madrid in the next round. Their defence look as dodgy as ours if not worse. Juventus a big no-no.

Plus it’s been such a long time since we saw Ronaldo cry.

Anybody see the players' post-match interview? Mane said something to the effect of "they never gave me the ball, but I still scored 2." It might have been a joke, but perhaps some kind of negativity is brewing there.

That was ridiculous. But I couldn't believe how they continued to give us space. Throughout the game they tried to get up the pitch, and we are just the most dangerous team without the ball. One misplaced pass and we're 50-50 of getting a great chance.

I thought he said it was Phil that never gives him the ball, and it definitely sounded like an inside joke.

Nah mate, definetly a joke.

Nah mate. It was a wee dig at Coutinho. He said 'he' didn't give me the ball. Nothing to see here. He's allowed a dig at Coutinho. In any sense.

Hope so. I would have never thought otherwise, but Mane showed some frustration in other games recently as well, so I started wondering if there was something there. He was wasteful in the 1st half as well, but back to his best in the 2nd. It's interesting to watch the dynamic between Coutinho, Mane and Salah – each one of them certainly has the ambitions to be the main star of the team and even though they do share the ball very well in Klopp's system, you could see the frustration of someone like Salah when the others get on the scoresheet and he doesn't.

Yeah, I think it definetly was. It was said with a smile after the reporter said Coutinho got 3 goals and Mane 2.

Other quotes from Mané:

Mané: "I am very happy to play alongside these great players - they make it easier for me - I am happy with that."

Mané: "Without the team we are nothing, credit goes to everybody."

Mané: "First goal - one of the best I have scored."

Reading too much into it. Team spirit is good like.

Mate, he has been rankled with being left out. Good. He's right, he's one of the best players in the division never mind our team, but he knows that Klopp is protecting him. That tonight was something different. It was a bit of craic. Mane was buzzing in that game. He was experiencing absolute joy. It was plain to see. He was terrific.

Liverpool are to make an official complaint to Uefa after Rhian Brewster was allegedly racially abused during the Youth League game with Spartak Moscow on Wednesday.
Brewster, the Golden Boot winner at the Under-17 World Cup in October, was incensed after he was targeted by a Spartak defender in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory and had to be dragged away by team‑mates and staff on the final whistle. The 17‑year‑old reported the alleged offence to the referee Mohammed al‑Hakim during the game and he passed the details to the fourth official at Prenton Park.
It is the second successive game against Spartak that has ended with allegations of racist abuse towards a Liverpool player. At Spartak’s academy stadium in September the Nigeria-born forward Bobby Adekanye was subjected to racist chants and gestures from fans of the Russian club.
Spartak were found guilty after an investigation by Uefa but, in keeping with its oft-criticised stance towards racism in the game, European football’s governing body only ordered the club to close at least 500 seats for their next Uefa Youth League game at the academy.
Asked about Brewster’s treatment after the game on Wednesday, the Liverpoolcoach Steven Gerrard said: “It’s difficult for me to comment on it right now. It’s something that the club will look into and deal with. I’d rather talk about Rhian Brewster’s performance. I don’t want to take any gloss off that because he was superb.”
Kick It Out sent out a stinging response to the alleged abuse, pointing the finger at Uefa for its lack of action on the issue.
Its statement read: “Less than two months ago, Spartak Moscow supporters were found guilty of racially abusing Liverpool’s Bobby Adenkanye, however it is clear that Uefa’s punishment of a partial stadium closure was far from sufficient to protect Liverpool’s players. Kick It Out has worked closely with Liverpool over the past two years to offer support regarding on-field incidents of discrimination, and believes the club has been let down by Uefa in their response.
“Kick It Out expects a swift investigation by Uefa. Should the Spartak Moscow player be found guilty, the club must receive a far stronger punishment if Europe’s governing body is truly serious about ensuring that football is an ‘#EqualGame’. It is also extremely concerning to this organisation that yet another incident has taken place involving a Russian club, particularly ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
“Players and supporters have been told on several occasions by the Russian Football Association that racism is not a serious problem in Russian football. However, incidents such as these undermine any confidence black and minority ethnic footballers or supporters will have in their ability to attend the World Cup in Russia without suffering racial abuse.”

It pains me to say it, but I thought our midfield looked much more fluid tonight without Henderson in it. Can and Wijnaldum seemed to play better.

I wouldn't describe tonight's midfield performance as "fluid" and I thought they were poor without the ball. Can also almost got himself sent off within the first 20 minutes. In short, I completely disagree – I think Milner and Henderson looked better against Brighton, they covered more ground and stuck in more.
