Liverpool signings will get wide berth in summer

I think he worried me the first time I saw him play against us, but since then I've been happy to see him on the ball as he normally wangs it into row Z.

dmish - Ashley young for 12 million!?!? I'll be surprised if he goes for less than 20.
is it the last 12 months of his contract this summer?

I'd say he'll go for somewhere in between £12-20m

is valencia a clever player? before he got injuried he was devastating for manu while being most average at his previous club. I would expect a similar jump in performances from young especially when someone as good as carroll is going to be on the end of his crosses.
harsh on valencia, he was VERY effective for wigan. Young plays like someone who believes their own hype, despite being slightly above average

Ha- I've just figured the identity of your oompa loompa.

I echo my esteemed colleagues

Even though I think I've said it already

Hazard? Sanchez? I doubt it, let's be realistic.
After the wc did anyone seriously think we'd be signing Suarez?

Why would they be unrealistic? They wouldn't cost much more than Ashley Young, and they'd probably be on lower wages too, with him being an England international and all that. I haven't seen that much of either, so I don't know if they're what we need, but this is one position where we *definitely* have to aim high. We've signed too many 'decent inexpensive option' wingers over the past 20 years and it's cost us big-time.

They're definitely worth going for and under normal circumstances wouldn't be out of our league at all, but it looks like interest in them with be rife.

I'm not a big fan of Young, but anything around the £10-12M mark and he'd be worth getting. He is overhyped, he is not a world beater and he never will be, but he is usually a fast and solid player (Riera MKII if you will) that would benefit us at the right price.

According to most Villa supporters Young wants to move to London and Liverpool isn't on his radar what so ever. Spurs is his likely destination.

Riera is not fast, and is a completely different player to Young.

I meant in the sense of, we could do better but at the right price he'll do a more than adequate job.

I've never understood what all the fuss is about regarding Young.
He's English.

And to re-affirm my earlier point, I'll stick with Dirk Kuyt thanks.

Dirk on one side, a speedster (is young actually that fast over 10-20 yards? Is so, ok) on the other side.

We don't need another babel that needs 50m before he hits his 'electric' pace. How often do you need to run that far?

Is he actually a great crosser as spider suggests? I've never seen it, albeit I've never paid much attention to him.
yes.

Apologies, didn't get you. Yeah you're probably right, but he's a pacy winger who can cross a ball, so I'd be happy if we signed him.

Carroll scored what, 19 goals last season for Newcastle and 11 this year?

What pacy, direct winger with fantastic crossing ability did he have setting balls up on a 7 foot plate for him to glance home?

Joey Barton.

Exactly.

We don't need better versions of Jermaine Pennant. We just need good footballers in support of him and he'll score enough goals, regardless of where the ball's coming into him from. I really don't buy into this crossing-winger requirement everyone seems to think we need.

We need good wide players. If they can cross, great. It shouldn't be the sole pre-requisite though.

You made a great point a while ago Ryan about Suarez, and how we just need great players, rather than great players who fill x role.

I'd find the post but:

A) people would think I've fallen in love with you.
B) I'm on a blackberry

we need people to go down the wing and competently cross into the box, simple as. it's a flaw in our game and has been for well over a decade.

Yeah for some reason the brackets ended up in the middle of the sentance rather than at the end. And indeed, he'll be an improvement for sure, so if we don't get bumloved on the price, it should be all good.

I'm not sure if you're being serious or not.

a) it's not 1972
b) we're not Wimbledon

i don't want ashley young. too temperamental and lazy when not in the mood
Stereotypical bollocks. He's lightening quick, can beat a man, take a free quick and just the kind of player we lack.
i'm confused by the stereotypical part...

he can be a great player but he goes missing in more games than maxi. Just because he can be quick doesnt' mean he'll use it. and so what if he can take a free kick? so can suarez. plus he's piss weak.
Pretty sure most of the people we're linked to are better. Hazard, Sanchez, both better. Marveaux, probably not but at least hes cheap
I'm confused by the temperamental part Fab.

Is he?
