But would we fill it (serious question)?
They do so why wouldn't we? Doesn't necessarily have to be a 75,000 stadium either.

We could fill a 60,000 right now. A new stadium would allow for expanision when the time is right. The current Anfield stadium will always have it's limits.

If I were a betting man I'd say 60k with room to expand is what we'll opt for.

Bear in mind the longer it takes to get it built the more cash we lose.

We have three designs already approved. The fans favoured one, the g&h one is not an option cos it doesnt meet building regs & there's a few major flaws need changing to get it to pass.

That leaves the two originals both 60k, the second one much better IMO with a single tiered Kop stand. Both not what I'd aspire to in an ideal world but there's clear reasons FSG would opt for them.

How long would it take to complete, roughly speaking?

about 3 fucking years ya cunt.

I know we use cunt liberally here but that seems a bit unnecessary.

Awful is one word to describe it.

Can't believe we're leaving Anfield 🙁 🙁 🙁
I can't belive we're still talking about it after 15-odd years.

Let's make a decision of some kind and move forward.

Ahhhh. Fucking hell Peter that was poor.

Tim Vine would be proud! not that i particularly like Tim Vine, but he tends to raise a chuckle in the end, lame as each indivdual gag is.

I didn't mean it like that, obviously.

The discussion has been on-going for 15 years and more. A long time to make a decision in anyone's book, even one with such far-reaching and long-term consequences.

I reckon a decision in principle to leave probably was made a long time ago, but various things (including incompetence at the top in LFC, the City Council and other agencies playing silly buggers, and the world ecomony going tits up) have prevented it from becoming a reality so far.

1st AFL design:

2nd AFL design:

The 2nd AFL design is clearly superior. The first looking like the Reebok IMO, or the Emirates. Dull & generic.

The minimum I want is a single tiered Kop. Ideally I want something of architectural significance that makes it unique & iconic.

Tbh if we have to leave anfield then i'm coming round to Vlad's view that we should just relocate to somewhere like Speke and be done with it. Better transport links and the freedom to choose our own capacity without first having to redesign half of North Liverpool. As for the design, I'd like to see something on the lines of the Dortmund stadium, which has the benefit of being fairly unique, focussed on the fans/atmosphere, and relatively simple and therefore, one would presume, cheap.

The council amaze me with trying to get the club the redevelop the transport infrastructure. The club brings in tens of millions of pounds to the city every single year. They should be bending over backwards to help us get this thing built.

They see LFC as a cash cow mate, they want to milk us for all they can.

They honestly believe we should fund a shared stadium & redevelop the old rail link & buy trains for it at our expense, plus new park & ride systems too.

Elsewhere in the country you have councils pulling strings to allow you to bring in valued income as much as possible. If we moved to Speke the council & city would lose shitloads in revenue yet the greedy arseholes seem to be doing everything in their power to push the club that way by demanding more & more.

That's a good call. I love their Kop, but I'm pretty sure it falls foul of our extremely rigid building regs on stands & their incline.

Speke would be a terrible move. There's nothing there. There's a social scene tagged onto going the match and having it in the middle of nowhere in Speke just doesn't fly with me as those facilities are not available. The public transport links to Speke are pitiful as well. We've had an airport there for fucking years and the nearest rail station they've been able to build is 2 miles away ! The councill are acting like bellends as well. Instead of using us a cash cow they need to realise there's a number of businesses in Anfield whose very existence rely on LFC being there. The council are being utter idiots in the way they are behaving. LFC moving out of Anfield will see the area become even more deprived than it is. Squiggles is right - they're putting unnesccesary pressure on a business that brings millions into the city every year just because they've been unable to get their own shit together as regards regeneration. Apart from the 2008 European and private investment the council have consistently and conveniently failed for years with regards to regeneration instead relying on pity and outside investment which isn't enough.

LFC belongs in Anfield for me. Yes we have to move on but we have to retain some of our history at least plus its proximity to the centre of the city is of great value. When our OOTer fans come to visit they will generally stay in the city centre. Any new ground should be near the city and Speke is nearer to Widnes than Liverpool city centre. Planting a new stadium in a soulless brownfield site at the southern arse end of Liverpool doesn't do that. It'll be shite. Look at the Riverside stadium as an example. Nice stadium with fuck all around it.

No to Speke.

Yes this is true. Although its on a mere fraction of the scale of course, in the town where I live the council bought our local club a new stadium, routed a dedicated bus line to stop there and put in a subway to walk to it from the town centre. After that the council sold the stadium to the club for a quid!

Result is the club didn't need to worry about money at all, has had great attendances and 2 promotions in 4 years, while the stadium has won numerous awards and has been selected as a 2012 Olympics Training venue.

So ultimately, although the council took a big hit, the town will ultimately benefit. Now I don't know what Liverpool Council have done, or haven't done, to support the club in their new stadium plans but if they are just trying to get as much as they can out of the club whilst putting nothing in themselves then not only are they missing a trick but they are also not really doing their job

Dortmunds stadium is sound but I agree that that design wouldn't stand up to the building regs. Plus you can get the metro straight to the stadium.

yeah, i'm sure there would have to be a few concessions to the planners, but i'd like to see the design go in that general direction.

i just wonder if going for a swanky corporate-friendly arena has been a bit of a red herring for us - how much of a market is there in Liverpool for those kind of fans? obviously still cater for the ones who exist, but maybe a better focus would be on trying to provide lots of cheaper seats at a low average cost by keeping the design as simple as possible. obviously this is only rough guesswork, but possibly going that route you could have 75k fans paying an average of, say, £25 a game, which might be more in line with the nature of our support: big but not so affluent. you'd then get the happy coincidence of a better atmosphere and a more intimidating, old-school ground.

this is all based on the assumption that there are serious savings to be made from a more simplistic build, of course...

Totally agree with this. I think the council would invest into a shared stadium but I doubt Everton could foot their share of the bill and we'd be left footing the bill for another team to use. Most fans wouldn't want a shared stadium anyway - red or blue.

ok, i'm sure you're probably right re location tbf. i'm just frustrated like the rest of you with the demands the council place on the club: as others have said they should be making it as easy as possible for us to grow and reach our potential. the one thing i don't want is some compromise whereby we leave anfield but end up in a similar situation 10 years down the line because we can't grow without onerous demands from the local gov.
