Liverpool related transfer speculation

I’m not convinced we should be selling Donkey - certainly not in January.

There…. I’ve said it…

On Danns, I know it was a brief return cameo mostly out in the left.. but he looked confident and technically very adept the other day when he came on.

We already know he has a natural killer instinct and is unfazed by stepping into the senior squad, so I’d love to see him get some minutes over the next month.

If I was in charge of the club I’d be looking at Danns plus one big signing to replace Nunez and Jota. As good as Jota is the data shows we can’t rely on him. I’d also be looking at extending Mac’s contract before Real let him know they want him on a free in a few years time.

Danns on the bench today…a good time to come on and make a claim for rotation.

Why is everybody wanking themselves over Danns? I get it, the kid has had some decent cameos, but what on earth has he done to deserve this love in? Is it just because donkey balls is the barometer? If he was good enough he'd have ousted Nunez already.
He’s been out injured most of the season and obviously needs time to develop anyway…but the talent is there.

We are doing what united are doing with mainoo and Diallo

I'm part of the local lad wanting to do well and coming through the ranks thing, but I don't think Dann's is the answer. He's shown that's he's a decent finisher in his cameos but he's also a big oaf who will most likely end up playing for wolves and if he has a decent couple of seasons, might sign for Spurs.

Cf so swanky.

tbh if we had solanke up front for us now, i think he'd have more than nunez 2 league goals

You and I were Solankes biggest champions on here back in the day and if he was still here, he'd probably have 10 goals by now in this team cause now, he's the finished article. As you well know, that doesn't mean he's good enough to play as a CF for liverpool. I like Dann's, but he's not the answer.

But thats the important distinction ; "good enough for liverpool" doesn't have to be the aim. They just have to be better than what we've got right now. It's all about incremental but positive improvement. Danns would be better than nunez right now, and arguably as good as jota (maybe even more consistently fit).

Danns may never be a fowler, torres, or owen; but at the very least he could be a more than capable placeholder for when that striker is available.

Hypothetically at the end of the season in the league we might have Salah on 20+, gakkers and diaz on 10+, jota maybe hitting 10 if he's fit, and nunez probably scraping the barrel on 5+ goals.

I'd rather the minutes go to Danns, as we KNOW nunez isn't good enough, whereas Danns needs to prove he is or isn't

"They just have to be better than what we've got right now" - that mentality will be why we are also rans instead of consitent champions.

I'm not saying for a long term goal; but for me playing danns is absolutely better than the alternative of nunez.

If in the summer theres a forward available who can take us to the next level; absolutely sign them. Hell, even in Jan we should try and get them

For in house players when we're not signing someone; its not really an issue for me. Nunez is dead money now

@StevieM are you still of the opinion we don't need a CB? I know our comments carry no weight, and the club doesn't alter its long term transfer list. there's very good chance we will look at the loan market

Yeah, look, the injury to Gomez does change things a bit.

I think it’s fair that Quansah gets a chance - this is what he’s in the team for and he’s shown last year that he’s capable of stepping up, so in that sense, we’re not at crisis point yet.

The status quo is, how close Konate is to returning, the extent of Gomez injury and whether we trust Endo to play at CB if required. I don’t think Nallo is anywhere near ready to step up.

As before, even with the two injuries, I’m not in favour of panic buying, so whoever we buy, if we buy, has got to be a player we would of bought regardless of whether we had injuries or not - otherwise we’re just adding to the squad for the sake of it and we’re adding a player that’s likely going to be superfluous in 6 months.

We don’t have an unlimited budget for signing 5th choice CBs.

We could recall players on loan - Rhys Williams is due back in January and there’s always Nat Phillips or even the Badger who could play at CB. Badger could be an interesting one because he could cover RB, DM and CM as well as CB if required.

What we’re looking for here is cover - not necessarily someone expected to play, but someone who could fill in if there’s an emergency.

It’s a risk though.

We could see if there’s someone reasonably good available through the loan market - which would mitigate against spending some of our finite resources on a CB that’s never going to hold down a regular spot.

If there’s a top quality youngster who we think might replace Virgil one day that can play either right or left CB or someone that’s better than a fit Konate - sure, if they’re getable for a reasonable fee.

For a fee of £20m, your suggest of Tomori makes sense. He could be a reasonable squad addition - home grown, can play FB & CB and both sides and at 27, he’s at least got a few years service left in him.

The question is, is a CB that’s not good enough to play for AC Milan (or one that’s injured) really going to be good enough for us?

Would £20m be better spent on someone else?

Ideally, take Tomori on loan until the end of the season - use Donkey on loan to AC Milan if we have to and we have another forward in mind to bring in. (Or better still give them first refusal on a summer deal for Donkey - send Danns out on loan to get some experience).

So… short answer - we have options that don’t make signing a CB absolutely necessary unless it’s a CB we were planning on signing anyway and have just brought the deal forward.

This is probably where Van den Berg would have been useful, but of course he wanted to actually play rather than sit in his arse, which is fair enough.

I think Tomori is a reasonable shout for the reasons you've listed.

Badger is interesting too - he's got the ability to fill our potential gaps but the question is whether he's fit enough to do so with sufficient quality, should we need. And what does recalling him do for Morton's development?
