Lallana

Status
Not open for further replies.
Look, I know Firmino is going through a bad patch right now, but still think long-term him and Coutinho is the most promising attacking partnership we have in the team. Against Chelsea and Man City the two Brazilians showed great understanding of each other's movements – I've never seen this between Coutinho and Lallana in the 20+ games they played together. Even in the Man City game when all of our attacking 3 put in terrific performances, Lallana contributed more by his pressing and running, but he was kind on the periphery in terms of creating chances, almost all of which came courtesy of Coutinho and Firmino.

Coutinho showed similarly good understanding with Sturridge in the past and I'm sure if we can break out of our injury hoodoo and can somehow get all 3 of them on the pitch at the same time (and with Firmino playing closer to his true level than he is now), we could destroy any defense.

I haven't taken a dislike to Firmino or anything.

Going forward I would hope that list of 3 might become 4 with Firmino but I left him out because he's wildly inconsistent at the moment and not to be relied on. I'd still want at least one of those 3 in along with Firmino, he's not ready to be a big influence on the side

I know you haven't. Some other posters seem to be on the verge of forming a anti-Firmino camp though – we've seen this with many players over the years and it's never pretty when posters get sucked in into "pro" and "against" camps.

One positive thing I'll say about Lallana is that Klopp always needs at least one player among the attacking 4 who is not just good, but GREAT at pressing and covering ground. In Dortmund that was usually Grosskreutz. So far Lallana has shown great willingness to run himself into the ground for the cause; you could make a case that all that extra defensive work has affected his attacking contribution somewhat (surprised Ryan didn't make that point yet), but at the same time that's precisely why he is getting regular minutes under Klopp. Lallana was excellent at Man City; in fact I liked his defensive contribution so much, I selected him in my top 3 ahead with goalscorer Firmino missing out. So, maybe if we stop expecting him to be our playmaker (I think his chronic ball-hogging tendencies pretty much disqualify him from that role in Klopp's fast-paced game) and instead think of him as a defensive-minded attacking player, maybe he can still become an integral part of this team.

There are other players vying for the same role in the team though – Milner is one, Ings could be one when he is back and Hendo, for me, has the best combination of creative talent, strong physique and work-rate to win a consistent place in that front 4. If Firmino doesn't turn it around soon, I could see Hendo actually taking his CAM spot, with Coutinho and Lallana/Ibe/Milner on either side.

No mention of his zero league goals in those stats ?

My prediction for Lallana is looking spot on. Yours is looking shite Froggy
Are you fucking blind ?

And how's your 'managers don't make a difference' doing then ?

I hope Rosco bothered to read this. Good post Rurik.

In fact if you look at the table I posted above you can see that his goal scoring suffers simply from the low number of shots per match he's has : 1.85 vs for example Coutinho's 4.98. Yes he should be scoring more but when the whole team hasn't done that well then it's more than a little crass to identify and crucify a midfielder when his contributions in other areas is starting to help the team perform to start the rise to their potential.

Großkreutz :-

One of my first key games for him was against Hoffenheim and I ran 13 kilometres during the game. Afterwards, Hoffenheim's coach Ralf Rangnick came out and said: 'Kevin Grosskreutz ran more than my whole team put together!' I was delighted and I knew Klopp was too as I then started nearly every game for him. I understood what he wanted. It was putting yourself apart for the sake of the team.

Klopp knew that despite Dortmund having talent such as Mario Gotze, Robert Lewandowski and Marco Reus, he needed players such as me who were prepared to run themselves into the ground.

It is important for players to understand the team comes before themselves. There is not much room for individuals. With him it is important that everyone is equal.

While he's defo not scoring nearly enough where does this 'he should be getting 1 in 4 come from?' Gerrard is the best AM we've ever had and he got 1 in 4. Silva and Oscar get 1 in 5. Ozil 1 in 6. I think the only AM's in the league with career stats around 1 in 4 or better are Yaya and Hazard, and neither of them are doing it this season.

Any goals would be good, considering he seems to have forgotten how to score. If he got near his 1 in 5 he was at at Southampton he'd be in the top few in the country. If he scored twice on Saturday then he'd be there.

*Stats are from all competitions. Restricted only to the time they were playing in the Premier League.

I think that indicates that 1 in 4 or above is exceptional. But 1 in 5 is what you should expect from a good AM.

Some of those stats are are course a bit misleading. For instances, Scholes and Giggs' stats include their teenage years and late 30s, where they were obviously not as productive.
Their ratio in their prime was certainly 1 in 4 or better.

Same is the case with Ramsey, who’s really upped his goals ratio over the last three years. Oscar, Coutinho and Sterling are also likely to increase their rate as they are still very young.

Lallana is stuck with the likes Ashley Young, Adam Johnson, Solano and Pedersen. And his record is boosted by is Southampton stats. His Liverpool ratio is close to 1 in 8.

Undoubtedly, that sort of player can have a lot of value. Willian for instance plays that role for Chelsea - except he's an extremely fit player, has bags of pace, energy and technical ability. That does compensate majorly for his lack of end product. Kuyt played that role very successfully for us, and scored loads of goals as well (even though he was limited technically).

The trouble with Lallana playing that role is that he's shown that he has a relatively brittle body. Playing that hyper-active role in attack is just inviting a physical breakdown. I don't think that's a sustainable option with him.

My expectation from Lallana was that he would be a goal-getting midfielder. He's not playing that role for me at the moment.

We're a far better team with him in it.

I think having him and Coutinho as two of the attacking three makes us much more versatile in attack, as we saw at City and Chelsea, their movement had both sides all over the place, but if you put them alongside Benteke, it kinda limits both them because the approach play changes and the intricate passing and ones-twos around the opponents box stop, it's even worse if only one of them is playing.

He's a good player, pick holes in his stats yeah, but he's fairly crucial to us when we are able to play our favoured set up. The price was always too high, most people said that from the word go, but it's pretty inconsequential now. The same people picking holes in the fee have defended the likes of Makovic and Firmino to the hilt when both have been, at least upto now, questionable purchases. The difference being that they both come from exotic footballing countries, which for many is a get out of jail free card, when defending how abysmal they've been.

Why? Without him, we wouldn't have got the first goal.

So that's like how many assists then? Must be right up there with his goals tally. Look, he's just another player, if here next season will be sat on the bench. Along with Benteke.

He's still got a few games in the Premiership to try and score his first goal of the season. I'd be embarrassed. He's been out scored by a central defender and a left back.

Adam Lallana is an attacking midfielder.

I think for 25m we probably could and should have gotten a better player or two comparable players worth 10-15m each.

He's got a superb first touch turn, can dribble and has an eye for a good pass but doesn't score near enough or provide enough creativity.

We certainly played some lovely stuff when he's on the pitch but lovely stuff doesn't win matches, goals do.

In fairness to him he created a few big chances yesterday (he missed one too) and teed up Henderson's goal.

A lot can be said about Lallana's transfer but he's playing well atm. We really don't have many other options,

The fee was always too much, like many others. I think there was only really Ryan who regarded his price as irrelevant. He's a good player who has done ok but was never going to justify the outlay.

The fee was waaaayyy to high.

I am not a fan but he has done ok, his goals and assists need to massively improve. Considering Firmino is getting stick for his start he has scored more and assisted in as many as Lallana from 240 minutes fewer.

So whilst he is playing better he is still miles away from being a worthwhile player.

I have been dissing Lallana because i felt he hasn't been pulling his weight as a senior international. However he has shown spirit and effort so I'll cut him some slack. Deserved to be in the team at least for now. Moreso when Firmino has taken that title of "shit and overpriced" spot of his.

Mata has got a way better ratio than I thought. Mane is boss isn't he? Can't go getting even more Southampton players though

There is that thing... Lallana had much better stats for Southampton than he has for us... and it's obv because we play against a majority of teams who set up for a draw. No-one sets up for a draw against Southampton. He played great against City... because they gave us space. So yeah... he's clearly loads better with a bit of space than trying to create it. But I guess everyone is. Dunno what the answer is (apart from buy Suarez).

It's inevitable that Mane's stats will also get worse playing for a bigger side that doesn't get as much space.

Mane's about twice as quick and a better finisher

Same was true of Downing, who shone in a counter-attacking Villa team and came he here and looked clueless when actually faced with a one on one.
