Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I recon the players we've been linked with so far show Klopp's thinking on the weak spots of this team pretty clearly. We are in the market for:
  • Goalkeeper. Linked with almost every young German shot-stopper out there including Timo Horn, Bernd Leno and even Ter Stegen (who is probably first choice, but he would need to make a decision to quit Barca, which is not easy).
  • Centre-back. So far it's been claimed some of the names Klopp is considering are Subotic, Ranocchia (unlikely, although he tried to sign him for Dortmund), Höwedes and N'Koulu from Marseiile. Not sure if we're looking for a new defensive leader or just to increase depth and quality.
  • Defensive midfielder/playmaker. Xabi might come back! Also strong rumors of an imminent bid for Xhaka and serious interest in Porto's Ruben Neves. Cleary this position is a priority.
  • Winger. Reports of an official bid submitted for Schalke's Leroy Sane. There is also possible opportunistic interest in Lanzini who can be snapped on the cheap as he is on loan at West Ham from Abu Dhabi.
I am discounting pretty much all the rumors coming out of Italy. They just make up stories every week with no connection to reality whatsoever; if you take them seriously than it means we're tracking literally half of Serie A and that's simply not the case. Also I think the story of us being interested in Pato just doesn't make sense on any level, so I'm ignoring that too. Also ignoring stories that seem to be based on pure speculation (such as links for Dortmund's star players because "Klopp is probably a fan"). With all that being said, I guess the positions we are NOT particularly interested in strengthening for now are:

  • Full-backs
  • "attacking" or all-around CMs
  • #10's
  • centre-forwards (until Klopp has a chance to evaluate Benteke and Sturridge)

How many of these targets will be acquired in January? I used to think we would only buy 1 player, but now it seems like it could easily be 3. For sure one CB because we have too many injuries and probably Sane and if one of our big DM targets is OK to move in January, then I don't see why not get them too. Big decisions on goalkeeper and strikers will probably have to wait until summer.

As for players leaving, I think the writing is on the wall for Allen. He could even be sold in January. The rest still have time to impress.

Yeh, I really like this Xhaka guy, but Xabi.

Regardless, it's obvious Klopp thinks a DM is essential, and that's great as it should be our priority. The others would be nice, but not essential.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has warned his players they have five weeks to secure their Anfield futures.
Klopp revealed he will make changes when the January transfer window opens.
Although the German insists he is keeping a completely open mind about those changes, he claimed the players themselves are aware that some hard decisions will have to be made.
Klopp has been given licence to reshape the team in his image. He is noted for his high-tempo, high-energy philosophy and will want to bring in signings who can play to that style.

Klopp said: “We will have the possibility to change some things in January and in the summer but at this moment we have made no decisions because we don’t have to make them yet.
“The players know this. It is always the same that at one point in the season you have to make a decision about them.
“We are at a time when they can collect positive arguments and say: ‘okay, we want to work together’.
“I don’t need to say this to them, they know it. In this moment we have made no decisions so I have time to judge.

“To make a final judgement on them I need more time. I know about the business of course.
“We have time and we will see what is possible and what is not possible.
“We will see what’s necessary and what’s not necessary, that’s how we work.”

Klopp though, is adamant he has faith in his side, and the players who will go to the Etihad in search of a result that will prove their ambitions.
Daniel Sturridge is one of those players, and even though his chequered injury record makes many lose faith in the striker, the German isn’t amongst them.
Klopp also went out of his way on Thursday to offer his complete backing to defender Dejan Lovren, despite the centre half being a constant target for the anger of Reds fans over the past year.

In a recent poll the Croat came top when Liverpool fans were asked to name the players they would most like to see dropped.
Lovren will deputise for injured fans’ favourite Mamadou Sakho at City, and the Reds boss is adamant he has no fears about that.
“With Dejan, there will be absolutely no problem,” he said.
“These two guys – Skrtel and Lovren – are healthy and everything is good. Dejan has done a really good job since I’ve come in here.
“I saw his first game for Liverpool - it was against Dortmund, when we lost by four! He was brilliant on this day.
Andrew PowellFriendly fire: Lovren scores against Borussia Dortmund
“I’d heard not the best things about him since but during my time here he’s looked strong and everything is okay.
“As long as these two guys are feeling good we don’t have a big problem.
“Mamadou is not 20 weeks out, it will be earlier than that so that’s good for us.”
While Klopp will agnoise over Sturridge’s participation, he insisted no one at Anfield has the slightest problem with coming face to face with Raheem Sterling since his acrimonious departure from the club in the summer.
“It is normal that important players play against their former club,” Klopp said. “He is a good player.
"He played here for a long time. I heard no bad words about him. He is a good boy.”

The Liverpool manager also confirmed he has met former Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard this week and reiterated that the midfielder can train at the club before he is due to return to LA Galaxy in mid-January for pre-season training...whilst making clear there will be no comeback with the Reds.
“He is a really, really good person. I enjoyed our time together and we spoke about many things.
“He doesn’t want to play next week or train next week – he wants to enjoy his holiday.
"If he wants to train, of course, he can, no question. He can use Melwood and then go back to LA and train and play. Then it is really far away.”

I know his game was never reliant on pace, but could a 33 year old Xabi still do it for a season or two in the prem? I've not seen enough Bayern in the last year to know his current level.

Seriously sensationalism in that headline. He basically said we'll sign not many players, if any and it's turned into 'players have 5 weeks to prove themselves'. Journalism is really shit sometimes.

Also, having him here would mean that up and coming DM's have someone other than Lucas to learn from.

JERMAINE JENAS EXCLUSIVE: Jurgen Klopp doesn't need to rely on Liverpool's star players because he is the superstar at Anfield

Yahoo Sport's global football ambassador insists the new Anfield boss is the one driving the club forward - and players will thrive and improve knowing it's him - and him alone - they have to impress

Jurgen Klopp has brought a new sense of belief to Liverpool

Liverpool's 4-1 win at Manchester City felt like a landmark moment in Jurgen Klopp's reign at Anfield. Not only did it revive the club's top four ambitions, it was also the moment where the German manager's philosophy started to fully take shape.
It left the impression that Klopp is so respected within the Reds changing room that all his players are buying into the team game, rather than relying on their so-called key men.
Klopp left Christian Benteke and Daniel Sturridge on the bench against Man City - the two players who are supposed to be his star strikers - but it didn't matter. Whereas in the past Liverpool have hinged their hopes on Sturridge's fitness or Suarez's goals, Klopp does not get bogged down in worrying about the importance or individual players. For him, it is all about the team.
As much as I liked Brendan Rodgers, he became reliant on certain players. To an extent he was justified, because when he had any combination of Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling or before that Luis Suarez, it worked well for him. But the problem is that when those players aren't available - or they leave the club - the team suffers.
[JENAS BLOWS HIS NOSE ON ARSENAL SHIRT TO SHOW SPURS ALLEGIANCE]
Jurgen Klopp doesn't seem to rely on anyone, as if it's not part of his plan to have a superstar in his team. He'll happily take a superstar, or he'll do without - it doesn't phase him either way. And that's an amazing trait to have.
For Klopp, losing Sterling in the summer would not have been a big issue - and consequently you would have avoided the circus surrounding the transfer - because he would just see it as an opportunity to buy somebody else and create another Sterling, or someone better. And he can point to his track record at Borussia Dortmund in doing exactly that. He doesn't rely on players because he knows he has the ability to transform a player within his system.

I haven't seen a manager with that level of confidence since Sir Alex Ferguson. Whether you wereDavid Beckham, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs or anyone else, no one was ever bigger than Ferguson atManchester United. And whoever came in would have to play Ferguson's way. A lot of managers might come into clubs with that same intention, but it doesn't often work out as planned. Any manager who is too domineering risks upsetting individuals in his team, but Klopp seems to be one of the few who can pull it off.
I know from what I've heard from one current first-team player at Anfield that all the players are loving training and Klopp's style of play. Every second they spend on the training ground is like an education, and you can almost see that in the way they're playing.

Players like Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana, Lucas and Emre Can are thriving. It's partly down to Klopp's style, but it's also his mentality and the belief he is instilling in his team. Personally, I'd love to play under Klopp. There aren't too many managers who have that effect - Jose Mourinho is probably the only other one in the Premier League, or going back further Ferguson.
When I look at Klopp I want to be in that changing room - testing myself and having him guiding me and pushing me to become a better player. That's what players want: a manager who can make you better, or turn you from a good player into a top player. Like what Mourinho did with Frank Lampardat Chelsea, for example.
Without a manager who sees that spark and manages to get that extra 10 per cent out of you, that potential can fade away. Klopp has got that ability. And if you don't buy into his project, he's quite happy to let you go and move on to a player who is.

Coutinho and Firmino inspired Liverpool to a stunning win over Manchester City

The Klopp factor could also be extremely useful to the Reds in the transfer market. Liverpool have been very quickly slipping down the list of clubs in top players' options. After they lost Sterling and Suarez, other top players would have asked themselves whether Anfield was the place they wanted to spend their prime years - and the answer would have been no. But now, those players will take a risk on Liverpool because they believe Klopp will get the best out of them, which could help them attract players in January and beyond.
Klopp also has a real quality in being able to let the fans in. It might sound like a strange thing to say - and I certainly don't mean it in bad way - but he comes across like the guy at the end of the road that manages your local team.
He's a man of the people, and that's what Liverpool Football Club has always been about. There was a huge buzz when Klopp arrived, but this is about more than the "new manager effect".
That fades quickly, trust me. You probably get one or two games' grace out of it. What we're seeing now is an identity and a direction that Klopp is stamping on Liverpool.

Is Lanzini available on the cheap? Whenever i see him play i get reminded of Coutinho. Sign sign sign!

He said he was honored to be linked to us the other day. It would be complicated as he's got some sort of deal already in place with WestbHan to sign at the end the year. He was brilliant in the first 3 weeks but I haven't seen him since. Looking at his scoring record suggests he's stopped hitting the net.

He scored 2 days ago. Great goal

He's 34 today. I'm not so sure its a good idea now.

Nah Tom can't be her. She was from Colchester and white as Westboro.

He looks a bit, no offence, muslamic
While we're on the subject does anyone know someone called Janine Cotgrove? According to the graffiti in college showers (many years ago) someone of that name has a few interesting tricks

Depending on who we play, Xabi would still be sensational.
For certain games we'd need more of an athlete that can cover both sides of the pitch to double up on wingers, plus press a little higher than a traditional DM. Don't think he'd have the stamina for that.

I know Emma Bairstow, and she actually used to do that trick if you bought her some crisps

This particular Emma Bairstow has since changed her name. She had one famous (at our work anyway) escapade with a secretary after a night out when they hired a hotel room. One of them got locked out of the room with no clothes on and happened to bump into the Reading football squad who helped get her back into the room and joined in the fun. They only got found out because the daft bints used the work taxi firm to take them all home in the morning.
